Four Double Basses. Eight well-known Christmas carols in a new guise. Score and parts. The Programme of Christmas Carols was first performed in New Orleans in 1976. In its original version the players were required to wear Dickensian costume and a seasonal narrative preceded each of the carol arrangements. The texts appear below.Duration without text: c.20 minutesDuration with text: c.45 minutesIntroduction by Robert RoheThe introductory text assembled with the kind assistance of Father Peacock of Loyola University of New Orleans was designed for use where the receptivity of the audience warrants. So little is known about thebeloved Christmas carols it is fitting that a brief sketch of the carols' past be used to enhance the familiar music. If desired the introductory text may be omitted at the discretion of the performers. The brief text preceding each carol should be used to acquaint the audience with what to expect from a quartet that will be playing the unexpected. The text also will pace the program and will extend performance time to around 45 minutes. In performance the bass viol quartet of New Orleans wore peaked caps and turtle necked sweaters to simulate the street performers of Dickens' time. The choice of four string basses for this program was to bring the closest relatives of the true viol into play.History and development of the Christmas CarolThe celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ has been observed for nearly 2 000 years through the ritual of the Christian Church with part of that ritual being devoted to celebration in song. In those early days church music was sung only no musical instruments taking part in the service. The type of song used by the church had the name 'plain-song'. It was a single line of melody plain and unadorned sung by one or more voices. By the year 1660 A.D. it had developed a second name 'The Gregorian Chant' after Pope Gregory who encouraged the use

from Porgy and Bess Instrument : string quartet (double bass ad lib.) Type : score and parts Nombre de Pages : 16 There is hardly any other lullaby in the field of classical music - apart from Brahms' 'Guten Abend, gute Nacht' - that has gained such popularity as George Gershwin's (1898-1937) 'Summertime'. It is a song from his opera Porgy and Bess“ which was premiered in New York on 10 October 1935 with only moderate success at first. Every important jazz musician insisted on presenting his own version of this rather evocative and catchy song with which Clara rocks her child to sleep at the beginning of the opera. The present version now offers the opportunity to play this famous 'Summertime' with a string quartet (and double-bass ad lib.) or string orchestra - let's swing!

Four movements top part advanced. Several recordings and many broadcasts. Duration c.13'.Programme Notes:The Swiss composer Joseph Lauber was born at Ruswil near Lucerne in 1864. After studying with Heger in Zürich and Rheinberger in Munich Lauber worked with Diémer and Massenet in Paris. With Massenet he learnt a great deal about orchestration a subject that he subsequently taught until the end of his life at the Geneva conservatoire as well as piano and composition. He died in 1952.Lauber's 193 catalogued works are many and varied. He wrote for all instruments and in every genre except oratorio and opera. Among his output areseveral works for double bass most written for Prof. Hans Fryba a personal friend with whom he worked as a double bass and piano recital duo. Fryba was one of the leading players in Europe in his day and was principal of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. First was Theme and Variations (1936-7) and a Rhapsodie with orchestra (1937). Three Walzes followed in 1939 a Gavotte and Gigue a Sonata and then in 1943 Fantasie de Concert written for the Geneva Competition. Four Caprices appeared in 1942 the same date as the Quartet for double basses which was dedicated to Fryba and written for the Berlin Philharmonic Double Bass Quartet one of the first ever such ensembles to exist. The Quartet for double basses was revived by Klaus Stoll in the 1970s for the Philharmonic Double Bass Quartet at that time to play. It was subsequently published in 1975 by Yorke Edition by kind permission of the composer's son Edmund Lauber. Rodney Slatford 2004

The musical charm of the Mass derives from the combination of Choir [SSA(TB)] and String Quartet. The Choral parts enable performances by female choir or mixed choir. Quartet for Saxophones is a piece for four Saxophones composed by Alfred Desenclos> in 1964 which lasts around 15 minutes and 30 seconds. Initially written for the Marcel Mule Quartet Quartet for Saxophones is a typical French quartet quite smooth and suave. The beginning of the piece that sets up the Soprano Saxophone against the others is quite jazzy but then it continues on to a more lyrical part quite slow with a simple melody. The tension is gradually built up and the finale unison is introduced quite dramatically with some bursts of energy. This Quartet for Saxophones wouldfit a Quartet of advanced to professional players. Alfred Desenclos> (1912-1961) is a French Composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1942. He also composed masses such as 'Messe de Requiem' and other pieces for Double Bass Harp Flute Trumpet or French Horn.

für zwei Hörner zwei Violinen Viola und Bass-It is hardly surprising that Beethoven did not write any more chamber music for winds after 1800. Following the change to middle-class musical culture demand declined for buoyant serenades and divertimenti intended for courtcircles – a genre that Beethoven had reservations about as it was. Composed in 1795 with no known occasion in mind his Sextet op. 81b is thus all the more remarkable standing out on account of the unusual virtuosity of thehorn parts. This edition is the first to provide the bass part as originally intended by Beethoven: for violoncello supported by a double bass. In addition to the original horn parts in E flat it also contains transposed parts inF.

4 short pieces exploring interesting and varied idioms but always accessible and with simple and supportive piano accompaniments. Lullaby has a gentle and lyrical melodic appeal; Sophie's Flute Song makes effective use of open strings harmonics and pizzicato (also available with string quartet accompaniment); A Little Waltz is more extended with some percussive accompaniment in the middle section; and A Serious Joke has a lively rhythmic quirky and humorous character. This book is useful for both educational and concert repertoire and all the pieces have proved very popular with young bassists.

Richard Reed Parry's Quartet For Heart And Breath for mixed Ensemble.Quartet for Heart And Breath was commissioned for Kronos Quartet by the 2009 MusicNOW Festival. The mixedEnsemble arrangement was premiered by yMusic.Instrumentation: Flute Clarinet in Bb Trumpet in Bb Violin Viola Violoncello and Double Bass (optional).'This piece is based around the idea of using the widelyvarying internal rhythms of the performers? bodies as performance parameters. There is no actual tempo or meter built into the piece. The breathing rates of the players are used in alternation with the individual performers? heartrates to determine the pace at which all of the musical material is played. This requires that the performers generally play quietly and delicately with little or no vibrato so as to be able to hear their heartbeats adequately. This in combination with thenatural variance between the different heart rates results in a kind of delicate musical ?pointillism?: starts and stops which are somewhat staggered parts which repeatedly line up and fall out ofsync with each other different individuals? pulses rising and falling. The piece is never performed exactly the same way twice. The performers wear stethoscopes positioned over their hearts so that each can follow his orher own heart rate. Two eighth notes/quavers correspond to the two sounds of a normal heartbeat and performers should match as closely as possible the staccato and irregular rhythm they hear. When instructed to ?play to breath? the natural cycle of one inhalation and one exhalation or vice versa will determine the length of the bar (two quarter notes/crotchets) without any attempt to make it metronomic. For wind players this means that the phrase isextended to encompass the whole of their natural breath without straining to hold for as long as possible. When one instrument is designated the leader their breath will determine the starts of phrases and the procession from

Despite the pressures of his teaching position Franz Schubert created a particularly large number of works in the year 1815. Besides around 140 new Lieder he composed the second and third symphonies four stage works the first important compositions for piano the String Quartet in G minor (D 173) and two Masses: the Mass in G major (D 167) and the Mass in B-flat major the object of this edition. Considering that the Mass in F major (D 105) was written from May to July 1814 and the Mass in C major (D 452) during June and July 1816 we can see that Schubert composed four of the six complete Mass settings which have survived from his hand within the short span of twoyears. The Mass was presumably first performed in Lichtental shortly after its completion. The fact that some partly autographic parts the organ part three soprano and three alto parts were made around 1820 seems to point to a second performance. And from Schubert’s brother Ferdinand we know that the Mass was performed a third time at the parish church in Hainburg at the beginning of October 1824 since Ferdinand played the organ on that occasion. The Mass was first issued in 1837 as Opus 141 by the Viennese publisher Tobias Haslinger.- Urtext of the New Schubert Edition- Full score performance material (BA5621) and vocal score (BA5621-90) available for sale

Par RHEINBERGER JOSEF GABRIEL. Rheinberger’s string quartets, his string quintet and his nonet for winds and strings were often performed and were very successful works during his lifetime. Their density, but also the delicateness of the scherzo movements are in the tradition of Schumann and Mendelssohn and these traits are combined with Rheinberger’s sense for the clear, defined structure of the movements and solid contrapuntal writing. The octet for winds and strings is published here for the first time and the nonet, which is actually a reworking of this octet that Rheinberger undertook some twenty years later, is also published in this volume. Rheinberger made major changes from the original octet and headded two new movements to the nonet. Both works show especially the interest and pleasure which he derived from the variety in the differentiation of colors in ensemble playing. The Thema mit Veränderungen op. 93, which until now has been known as a work for string quartet, is published here with the double bass part which Rheinberger later added./ Répertoire / Ensemble de Chambre
