Pianolude aborde des aspects de l'enseignement du piano rarement évoqués côte à côte dans un même recueil: intégrer la musique de notre temps à l'enseignement traditionnel. Parallèlement à l'apprentissage traditionnel et progressif du jeu pianistique, Pianolude convie les enfants à jouer avec l'ensemble des ressources sonores de l'instrument.
Le CD inclus dans l'ouvrage propose l'interprétation de l'ensemble du répertoire et fournit des exemples de réalisation des activités de création.

A lui seul, le titre de ce recueil est tout un programme. Pianolude associe l'instrument et le jeu, mêlant les aspects les plus traditionnels de l'apprentissage pianistique à une exploration ludique de l'instrument.
Comme un livre d'images. Sa présentation, très esthétique, regorge d'illustrations poétiques et humoristiques dignes des plus jolis albums pour enfants. Le graphisme clair, les caractères en lettres attachées, le papier légèrement glacé et la reliure à spirales en font un album agréable à feuilleter sur lequel on s'attarde volontiers. Les premières pages se parcourent comme un livre d'images. On y découvre quelques suggestions de jeu autour du piano. L'élève peut ainsi s'en inspirer pour explorer et découvrir de lui-même tout un monde sonore: timbres, intensités, durées, tessitures, modes de jeu... et s'approprier ainsi ce monstre sonore qu'est le piano.
L'enfant prenant graduellement possession de l'instrument, l'approche de la lecture se fait graduellement à partir du do central, mains alternées. On s'échappe assez vite de l'incontournable do majeur pour explorer des échelles plus colorées. Les notions musicales et solfégiques sont abordées de manière très progressive, associant chaque nouvel élément théorique à l'étude d'une pièce musicale. L'introduction des altérations se fait assez tôt et les mains se déplacent plutôt rapidement sur l'ensemble du clavier par le biais des 8va.
Jouer tout seul ou avec les autres. La plupart des pièces sont présentées avec un accompagnement du professeur - ou d'un élève plus avancé - dont les harmonies, enrichissant les mélodies jouées par l'élève, viennent parfois chatouiller l'oreille de légères dissonances et taquiner l'imaginaire de sonorités nouvelles. De nombreuses pièces sont écrites pour quatre, six ou huit mains. Conçues comme des pièces à géométrie variable, on peut n'en jouer que la partie principale - écrite en grosses notes - ou bien y associer les autres parties en les distribuant à d'autres élèves pour une version plus collective. Ces pièces, plus abordables que les pièces en solo, véritable intermède récréatif dans la progression de l'élève, constituent ainsi un bon outil pour la lecture à vue et la pratique collective.
Tout un monde sonore. Le répertoire très éclectique des pièces de Pianolude est constitué en grande majorité de compositions originales. On y trouve quelques arrangements de chansons du répertoire populaire traditionnel: Au clair de la lune, j'ai perdu mon âne, Ah vous dirai-je maman... quelques petites pièces un peu jazzy: New Orleans Parade, Comme un blues, Oh When the saints... D'autres, plus exotiques, comme La petite maison russe ou La poupée chinoise, invitent doucement au voyage musical.
Mais la plus grande originalité de cette méthode réside dans l'introduction d'un langage plus contemporain, incluant les codages non traditionnels et des modes de jeux spécifiques (clusters, glissandi, notes muettes, séquences aléatoires, écriture graphique. jeu dans les cordes...), mettant la musique contemporaine à la portée des plus réfractaires. La première pièce, intitulée En colère, écrite dans une alternance de notes traditionnelles (deux notes autour du do central), de clusters et de petites séquences d'improvisation guidées, regorge d'indications expressives: en colère, en se calmant, grosse colère, ...énorme colère, ...très calme. Sans efforts considérables et par le biais des humeurs et de leurs contrastes, l'élève aborde les rudiments du codage musical: aigu/grave, bas/haut, droite/gauche, fort/doux, long/court... Parmi les autres pièces utilisant un langage contemporain, on trouve l'irrésistible Chant des étoiles, qui recueille un succès certain auprès des élèves - et de leurs parents - mêlant clusters, notes aléatoires, glissando dans une ambiance délicieusement céleste, scintillante, toute faite de résonances entremêlées. Les ambiances proposées à travers ces courtes pièces rejoignent l'imaginaire de l'élève et permettent par ce biais de développer son sens de l'écoute et d'accroître sensiblement sa palette sonore.
Un CD, inclus dans l'ouvrage, présente l'enregistrement de la plupart des pièces de la méthode, interprétées sur un vrai piano avec beaucoup de finesse et de musicalité, ainsi que des exemples de réalisation de petites créations effectuées par des enfants. Celles-ci constituent des pistes pour l'improvisation et, pourquoi pas, pour l'élaboration d'un langage plus personnel.
Pédagogie du piano contemporain ou pédagogie contemporaine du piano? Cette méthode est le résultat d'une réflexion collective des auteurs, inspirée par l'expérience sur le terrain d'une pédagogie de la musique contemporaine. Sans que celle-ci soit assénée manière obsessive, Pianolude s'en inspire pour éveiller la curiosité de l'élève pour des sonorités moins conventionnelles que la plupart de celles des méthodes plus traditionnelles. Si cet ouvrage peut paraître au premier abord un peu dispendieux, la qualité de sa présentation et la richesse de son contenu dépassent de loin le prix qu'il en coûte.
Le choix d'une méthode est souvent difficile, très personnel et toujours subjectif. On choisit une méthode parce qu'elle adhère aux principes de notre enseignement, qu'elle répond aux besoins du moment et traduit un certain état d'esprit. À moins qu'il ne s'agisse d'un état d'âme. On s'y essaye comme on essaye un nouveau vêtement. Avec le temps, on s'y sent parfois un peu à l'étroit, un peu mal à l'aise. Alors on en change. Pour avoir essayé Pianolude, l'avoir testé, expérimenté, pratiqué depuis sa parution en 2002 avec la plupart de mes élèves débutants, je peux dire que j'ai trouvé là vêtement à ma taille.
En résumé, c'est un support riche et éclectique pour la première année d étude du piano. À l'aide de son vaste choix de pièces, le professeur peut établir son propre parcours, en fonction de ses propres goûts et de ceux de ses élèves. Son approche ludique favorise la recherche et la créativité tout en intégrant une certaine exigence musicale et en incitant à une écoute active et à un jeu expressif.
Un petit avertissement cependant: certains jeux ou pièces musicales requièrent nécessairement l'utilisation d'un vrai piano (qui vibre et résonne de toutes ses cordes). / Méthodes

Par LEVINAS MICHAEL. Précédé de Je, tu, il, prologue à La Métamorphose sur un texte de Valère Novarina. Au sortir d'un rêve agité, Grégor Samsa s'éveille pour vivre un véritable cauchemar, celui de sa transformation en énorme cancrelat. Tout le monde connaît cette nouvelle de Kafka - elle appartient désormais à nos mythologies contemporaines. L'idée d'en faire un opéra est tellement excitante qu'on en serait presque à se demander pourquoi une telle adaptation n'a encore jamais été tentée. Peut-être parce que la perspective donne le vertige et que l'histoire elle-même semble veiller à sa propre irreprésentabilité ? Il aura fallu attendre près d'un siècle pour que le texte se métamorphose en opéra grâce à Michaël Levinas et à l'équipe artistique qu'il a réunie. Avec Valère Novarina et Emmanuel Moses, le compositeur opère un travail sur la langue pour révéler sa vocalité lyrique. Le chant du 'sopraniste' Fabrice Di Falco et des autres interprètes est ensuite traité par des techniques d'hybridation informatiques [réalisées à l'Ircam, NDLR]. Toujours en quête 'd'une suggestion d'ébranlement dramatique dans la vibration du son' comme s'il y avait un 'au-delà du son dans le son', la musique de Levinas s'ouvre au fantastique. Ce sentiment de l'extraordinaire sera rendu palpable par les instrumentistes d'Ictus, imbattables quand il s'agit de faire advenir des univers inouïs. L'adaptation scénique est confiée à Stanislas Nordey, homme de théâtre insatiable découvreur de textes contemporains. Il s'est également distingué à l'occasion de nombreuses collaborations avec les plus grands compositeurs de notre temps, parmi lesquels Michaël Levinas. Qui devient-on la nuit ? Que s'est-il passé dans le sommeil de Gregor pour qu'il en sorte ainsi changé en monstre ? Le réveil, c'est toujours l'entrée dans un monde enchanté.' Yannick Haenel (1) Le monde enchanté de Michaël Levinas est celui de ce moment risqué où peut naître un drame et, c'est là la partie visible de l'enchantement, des personnages chantent, vivent et meurent. Nous sommes à l'opéra. Comment le compositeur parvient-il aujourd'hui à relever en musique le défi de la scène ? Quels moyens musicaux convoque-t-il ? Quel monde harmonique et lyrique bâtit-il ? Car pour sonner à ce point juste sur les planches, il faut que le style lyrique du créateur vienne de bien loin, de profond, non pas d'une circonstance, mais de ce qu'il est musicalement, depuis longtemps, de ce qu'il poursuit assidûment dans son oeuvre. En 2011, avec La Métamorphose, son troisième ouvrage lyrique, Michaël Levinas a montré une nouvelle fois la maîtrise qu'il avait des données de l'opéra : l'opéra comme théâtre, l'opéra comme lieu où l'est ému par le chant, l'opéra comme institution où la création a sa place. Quand les spectateurs découvrent à l'opéra le personnage de Gregor imaginé par Michaël Levinas, ils ont déjà entendu un prologue. Intitulé Je, tu, il et composé sur un texte somptueux de Valère Novarina, ce prologue se trouve, dans le temps du récit, en lieu et place de la nuit, d'un rêve sans doute, avant le réveil de Gregor. Les spectateurs assistent à une allégorie des énonciations (les pronoms personnels chantent : 'je', 'tu' et 'il' deviennent un instant des personnages), enlevée, très vive, baroque. Le compositeur (celui qui choisit la succession dans le temps des événements du récit lyrique - Michaël Levinas a largement adapté la nouvelle de Kafka) confie à trois sopranos ce prologue. Ainsi le récit de La Métamorphose débute-t-il par autre chose que lui-même, un autre lyrique qui n'est pas le récit, qui n'est pas même un récit, mais qui prépare à l'écoute de la Passion de Gregor qui suit - l'infra-récit est la préfiguration de l'infra-homonidée kafkaïenne mourante que montrera La Métamorphose - avec toute la résonance de ce parti-pris dramaturgique dans l'histoire politique de l'humanité. Ce geste est théâtral autant que musical. Il est très caractéristique de la sensibilité du compositeur pour ce qui, dans la musique, induit le lyrisme, le lyrisme étant entendu ici comme la mise en oeuvre de 'toutes les puissances que recèle le verbe soumis au rythme et à la mélodie' (2). En un mot, la dimension théâtrale de l'opéra n'est pas reniée par Michaël Levinas - au contraire : elle est exaltée. Toutes les puissances que recèle le verbe aident le compositeur dans son projet lyrique. Si le chant naît du verbe chez Michaël Levinas, il faut considérer que les parties instrumentales aussi naissent du verbe. Aux parties instrumentales s'ajoutent les parties électroniques qui, dans La Métamorphose autant que dans Les Nègres, opéra de 2003 d'après la pièce éponyme de Jean Genêt, donnent au son ce statut irréel, magique nécessaire à tout lyrisme. Elles aussi sont pensées, écrites, composées comme un prolongement des données du langage. Dans La Métamorphose, la polyphonie vient essentiellement de la voix démultipliée de Gregor et cette démultiplication est autant instrumentale qu'électronique. Le chant - émouvant ô combien - de Gregor est un choral, sa voix est intermédiaire, ni la sienne seule, ni une pluralité identifiable. La voix de Gregor participe d'une singularité inaudible - un monstrueux bien au-delà de l'hybride - pour son entourage qui le conduit à mourir (par décence ? par abandon de ses proches ?). Il y eut dans Les Nègres 'un langage tambouriné tissant des liens entre les phonèmes de la langue et la percussion' (3) et dans cette veine, récemment, Le Poème battu - il y eut en 2008 les réussites madrigalistes de Le 'O' du haut et des Trois chansons pour la Loterie Pierrot et Jean Lagresle sur un texte de Valère Novarina - il y eut enfin, pour La Métamorphose, l'acmé (provisoire - telle est l'activité de création) de l'analyse et de la synthèse sonore par ordinateur de la voix parlée et chantée (4). Comment faire des mots eux-mêmes un chant, un drame, un opéra enfin ? C'est là tout l'enjeu de la poïétique de Michaël Levinas. Le poïen grec, c'est la réponse à la question du faire. Dès Go-Gol (1996) (5) -le titre, Go-Gol est déjà un jeu de décomposition / recomposition du nom de l'écrivain dont est tiré le livret, le compositeur fait du mot le ressort de sa dramaturgie musicale. Il est entré depuis dans le son du mot lui-même et applique au champ de la linguistique une démarche spectrale (6). Ainsi naît son matériau lyrique. Décortiquant les données des hauteurs, des syllabes, phonèmes et morphèmes, Michaël Levinas - avec l'aide d'un outil informatique de plus en plus puissant - en tire des tournoiements, des arabesques, des lignes qui entent une composition destinée à la scène. L'opéra est bien là un lieu de création. La pointe de ce qui constitue la création musicale - à la fois l'oeuvre d'un compositeur qui est la recherche d'une vie et les outils qu'il utilise en les faisant évoluer - est non seulement viable, mais éminemment émouvante à la scène : la palette que s'est constituée le musicien induit bel et bien cette vibration des affects que tout un chacun veut à l'opéra, toutes époques confondues. '(...) c'est à l'opéra que, paradoxalement, tend je dirais toute oeuvre instrumentale.' déclarait en 1982 le compositeur (7). En effet, l'oeuvre de Michaël Levinas offre de lire les étapes de cette conception et des recherches qu'elle appelle. Ancrée dans le langage, toute adonnée au théâtre, la lyre de Michaël Levinas allie l'exigence créatrice à la séduction parfois vénéneuse d'une émotion dramatisée avec art. Pour l'heure, le compositeur a fait de la syllabe son mystère. Du mystère naît le drame et, sur scène, d'une dramaturgie naît un mystère par lequel le compositeur nous impose son temps, non pas le temps d'un drame, mais le temps intérieur résonant - pour notre plus grand plaisir. Commanditaire L'Etat et l'Opéra National du Rhin Notice Un opéra fantastique d'après le roman d'Alfred Kubin, Die andere Seite Le livret a été tiré de L'Autre côté d'Alfred Kubin, traduction française de Robert Valençay revue par Christian Hubin (José Corti, 2000) Musique de Bruno Mantovani Livret de François Regnault (avec la collaboration de Bruno Mantovani) J'avais lu il y a longtemps L'Autre côté d'Alfred Kubin, dont le titre m'intriguait. J'avais dû voir des illustrations étranges, visiblement expressionnistes, audacieuses et cauchemardesques de l'artiste, et je m'étonnais qu'il eût écrit un roman. Le roman, assez vite, me saisit, puisqu'il racontait comment le héros, qui semble bien n'être autre que l'auteur, car il est comme lui dessinateur et a comme lui vécu à Salzbourg, se fait inviter par un ancien camarade de lycée dans un empire en lointaine Asie dont il est devenu le chef, et qu'il s'en va donc de l'Autre Côté, où commencent les aventures... On me fit rencontrer Bruno Mantovani, qui avait la commande d'un opéra, de la part de Nicholas Snowman, pour l'Opéra du Rhin. Nous nous sommes vus ensuite à plusieurs reprises, et je n'eus pas de mal à m'entendre avec ce compositeur moderne, dont les oeuvres que j'ai écoutées de lui me plaisent, qui connaît comme pas un - et de l'intérieur - toute l'histoire de l'opéra - et qui, en outre, comptait bien éviter quelques-uns des écueils sur lesquels nous tombions d'accord que l'opéra parfois s'échoue : sans mépris pour qui que ce soit, mais sans fausse modestie non plus. J'aimais l'opéra, depuis que j'avais vu Maria Callas en chanter deux, et depuis ma participation cinq ans comme dramaturge, ou ne je sais quoi, avec Patrice Chéreau à Bayreuth, et j'avais écrit un livret pour Georges Aperghis, avec qui j'ai eu le bonheur de travailler plusieurs fois. Sans parler d'un autre livret pour un autre opéra à venir. Mais étant essentiellement introduit dans le théâtre, je mesurai combien Mantovani sait que l'amour du théâtre, dont il est un excellent spectateur, est bien souvent le schibboleth qui départage les grands compositeurs d'opéra des autres. Le sujet On ne trouve pas forcément tout de suite un sujet de livret, et ensuite, on ne trouve pas forcément le livret de ce sujet. Nous envisagions quelques pistes, nous nous y engagions, et puis nous n'allions pas loin, ou c'était sans issue. D'entrée de jeu, nous étions convenus d'éviter la reprise d'un mythe ancien, fût-il grec ou amérindien, nous mesurions l'extrême difficulté de trouver un mythe moderne - cela ne s'invente pas - et nous répugnions aussi à prendre un sujet qui s'appliquât à l'actualité politique, faute de certitudes, ou plutôt par la conviction qu'on ne traite pas aisément des malheurs du monde, ou du moins, pas aussi frontalement que certains se l'imaginent. Les Soldats de Zimmermann, par exemple, parviennent à une telle portée esthétique et politique parce qu'il est passé par une pièce de Lenz, qui raconte des événements du XVIIIe siècle, Helmut Lachenmann est parvenu à une oeuvre poignante et d'une extrême beauté avec sa Petite Marchande d'allumettes pour parler du gauchisme, à partir d'un écrit de Gudrun Ensslin, parce qu'il est passé par un conte d'Andersen et par des textes de Léonard de Vinci. Je me suis alors souvenu de L'Autre côté, que j'ai relu, et Bruno et moi sommes vite tombés d'accord que cette oeuvre pouvait d'autant plus fortement nous inspirer que l'atmosphère d'inquiétante étrangeté, de fantastique et de décrépitude, très réussie, dans laquelle l'oeuvre est plongée, était au service d'une cause imaginaire, fabuleuse, invraisemblable, mais qui pouvait fonctionner comme une grande et terrible allégorie politique : l'Empire du Rêve, créé de toutes pièces par un richissime illuminé, Claus Patera, condisciple, donc, du dessinateur, constitué par des restes ramassés ou aux quatre coins du monde, dans une région nauséeuse et miasmatique, dont l'idéal promis au début se révèle vite une imposture, sans qu'on sache à qui la faute, car on apprendra que le dictateur lui-même, qu'on ne voit presque jamais, n'y croit plus guère, et combine dans sa personne les traits d'une adolescence angélique, d'une sénilité précoce et d'une espèce de déphasage complet d'avec ce qui se passe dans son Empire. Et pourtant, ce n'est pas faute qu'il n'ait des partisans fanatiques dans la population bizarre de la ville de Perle, capitale de l'Empire. Lorsqu'un Américain tout aussi richissime viendra prendre le défi de le renverser et de s'arroger le gouvernement de l'Empire, peut-être convient-il que vous n'y voyiez pas aussitôt quelque arrangement d'événements récents, non seulement parce que ce roman fut écrit en 1908, avant même ceux de Kafka (que Kubin rencontra d'ailleurs plusieurs fois, et qui restait perplexe devant L'Autre côté), mais aussi parce que l'imaginaire fantastique et la vision poétique de l'auteur viennent hanter le récit de formes et de couleurs venues d'un autre monde : des profondeurs de l'inconscient, sûrement, à une époque où on lui en supposait encore - du fond d'une Angoisse dont on devine que l'auteur est incessamment traversé - mais surtout d'une capacité plastique de rêverie qui franchit constamment la barrière supposée étanche entre l'écriture et le dessin - et si Kubin ne manque pas d'illustrer son propre livre, lui aussi, d'inquiétants dessins étranges, on admire d'autant plus sa virtuosité que les deux techniques qu'il pratique ici de conserve se défendent très bien chacune indépendamment l'une de l'autre. Comme Holbein illustrant Erasme, comme le Goethe du Voyage d'Italie, comme Kipling s'illustrant ses Histoires comme ça, rares exemples. Le livret Je me suis vite dit que ce serait évidemment à la musique de prendre en charge l'imaginaire et le fantastique, et que les indications scéniques du livret, issues toutes du livre, ne seraient là que pour suggérer ce que le compositeur pouvait lire aussi bien que moi dans l'ouvrage. Mais je me suis dit aussi que puisqu'il y aurait des personnages - nous en avons réduit le nombre - et qu'ils parleraient, c'est-à-dire chanteraient, il fallait prendre le plus grand soin qu'avec assez peu de paroles, on puisse suivre exactement l'histoire, la psychologie des personnages principaux (et ici j'utilise à dessein le vocabulaire le plus conventionnel, non pas pour rassurer le réactionnaire et inquiéter l'avant-gardiste, mais parce que chanter des paroles est la matière même de l'opéra), le cours des événements, en même temps que les transformations, métamorphoses, catastrophes et l'apocalypse d'un Empire démoniaque, suscitées sans doute, au-delà de son tyran, par des forces innommables. Si je lui faisais parfois part des représentations musicales ou rythmiques de certaines scènes qu'il avait la gentillesse d'écouter et de transposer dans son art, Bruno Mantovani était en retour plus qu'attentif à la moindre des répliques à mettre en musique, entendant d'une oreille de théâtre ce qui peut se dire, se chanter, se mi-dire, etc. (il y a bien des façons, depuis longtemps, dans l'opéra ou dans le théâtre musical, de dialectiser en musique la différence du parler et du chanter, opposition qui reste opératoire dans son principe, mais qui s'ouvre depuis au moins Schönberg à des variations infinies). Pour la composition d'ensemble, je sais combien l'harmonie, le contrepoint éventuel (il y a un choral !), le rythme, les timbres peuvent, chez un musicien exigeant, s'engendrer, sinon se déduire, à partir de structures simples ou complexes, de sorte que l'écriture, et, donc aussi la perception, consciente ou inconsciente, d'une oeuvre ne se fassent pas au seul fil du récit, ni en fonction du seul effet, même si, au dire de plusieurs compositeurs que j'admire, l'opéra, par sa nature théâtrale, sa spatialité et sa temporalité spécifiques, demande moins de rigueur apparente que d'autres formes d'écriture. Aussi n'ai-je pu m'empêcher, même dans ce qui n'est que le livret, de suivre ou de m'imposer des structures, elles, fort simples, dans l'organisation des scènes, de leurs rapports de ressemblance ou de dissemblance, de leurs correspondances thématiques, - contrastes, répétitions, citations, allusions - d'autant que la fable principale conte la substitution symétrique, jusque dans son affrontement corporel, entre le Maître de l'Empire et l'Américain qui le renverse. L'hybride Il était aisé, en ce sens, de diviser l'oeuvre en deux actes (même si le roman a davantage de parties et de nombreux chapitres), avec un Prologue et un Epilogue : grandeur et décadence de l'Empire du Rêve, conclura-t-on, même si l'intérêt de ce conte est justement de montrer que tout est déjà pourri dans le Royaume de Perle, et que le salut venu d'ailleurs ne fait que liquider la pourriture ! Oui, l'oeuvre de Kubin, aussi bien dessinée qu'écrite (il a écrit plusieurs autres nouvelles), est foncièrement pessimiste. Lorsqu'il a constaté, moins l'horreur du monde que la capacité qu'a le sommeil de la raison d'enfanter des monstres, pour reprendre la formule de Goya, un peintre qu'il aimait, il lui reste à les lâcher en les dessinant. Si Dieu a créé le monde, Claudel pensait qu'il fallait le lui restituer en louange et en poésie, ou en drames dans lesquels le pire ne fût pas toujours sûr. Si le Diable a fait le monde, dirai-je que Kubin pense qu'il faut lui restituer l'histoire de ses calamités et lui tendre le miroir de ses immondices ? La dernière phrase de L'Autre Côté nous donne une étrange réponse : Le démiurge est un être hybride. Tout un roman de quelques centaines de pages pour parvenir à cette phrase peu claire, digne des Gnostiques des premiers siècles du Christianisme ! Mais la phrase peut aussi bien s'éclairer de ce qu'on a dit : puisque le monde semble mauvais, il faut au moins, pour que le pire n'en soit pas toujours le plus sûr, muni de son carnet de croquis, en faire le relevé régulier, en tenant par l'art le malheur à distance, et en mesurant constamment que le démiurge qui a raté le monde, ne pouvait pas faire mieux, qu'il y a en lui du meilleur et du pire, en bref qu'il est hybride ! Mais hybride après tout comme l'homme lui-même, sa victime et son destinataire - ou plutôt, son dessinateur ! Claus Patera, est en effet un personnage dont on ne sait s'il a gardé son innocence ou s'il est déjà complètement abîmé, intrinsèquement, physiquement et spirituellement hybride, à mi-chemin entre le réel et l'irrationnel, habité de forces obscures ou de pulsions obscènes et morbides, mais l'Américain Hercule Bell, un peu décrit comme un Américain digne de Jules Verne, est pris lui aussi dans une dangereuse oscillation entre le philanthrope vantard et le tyran sanguinaire ! Si donc a lieu le Jugement dernier, car aucune apocalypse n'est à écarter, à défaut de nos fautes, nous montrerons nos pulsions, et pour défendre notre prochain ne sachant dessiner, nous arborerons les illustrations par nous de ce monde où nous avons été jetés. Et si le feu ou le déluge anéantissent toutes choses, peut-être restera-t-il au moins quelque part un trait sur le papier, carbonisé ou délavé. A l'ancien camarade de classe, au dictateur hybride, à cet Américain sauveur lui-même si douteux, et qui font couple à la fin dans une espèce de répugnant coït, s'ajoutent donc le couple principal, Kubin - nous l'avons appelé ainsi, bien que l'auteur de le nomme pas - et sa femme. Nous avons, autour d'eux, réduit à trois les personnages qui les entourent, le Coiffeur-philosophe, qui leur sous-loue un appartement, l'Editeur qui passe un contrat avec le dessinateur, et le médecin Lampenbogen, qui soignera Madame Kubin et accompagnera le mari veuf jusqu'à la fin. Les autres personnages sont des comparses, mais il y a le Choeur, qui a une grande importance, et qui compose le peuple entier de Perle, versatile, monstrueux, prêt à tout, morbide et orgiaque, auxquels s'ajoutent mammifères, serpents et insectes, qui sont peut-être des hallucinations, mais dans un monde fantastique, le cauchemar et la réalité se confondent. Le dessinateur La fin de l'aventure se solde pour Kubin par un rapatriement suivi d'un internement. Il serait alors aisé d'en conclure, comme on le fait souvent dans des cas semblables, que toute cette aventure n'aura été qu'une immense hallucination. Outre que ce n'est pas l'idée d'Alfred Kubin, l'auteur réel du livre, cela ne changerait guère la représentation qui en résulterait sur la scène d'un opéra, où ce qu'on voit, que ce soit la vision d'un Faust ou celle d'un Hoffmann, passe forcément pour réel. Le public ne croit que ce qu'il voit et ce qu'il entend, plus qu'ailleurs, il croit tout ce qu'il voit et tout ce qu'il entend, et c'est lui qui a raison. Surtout, j'aime fort que les dernières paroles de Kubin reviennent à dire que désormais, il passe ses meilleures heures avec du papier, des crayons et des bâtons d'encre de Chine... plus proche de l'artiste rêveur, du voyant... Et ce qu'il représentera désormais s'inspirera donc de cette espèce de cosmologie duelle qu'il évoque à propos de Patera : L'attraction et la répulsion... les pôles de la terre... le jours et la nuit... le blanc et le noir... Le blanc et le noir ! Voilà tout le manifeste esthétique de l'illustrateur expressionniste à qui nous devons, disséminées dans des musées et des livres, ces gravures, reconnaissables entre toutes, devant lesquelles nous nous défendons mal d'un malaise devant les souffrances aisément devinables d'un artiste plus écorché que les autres - la guérison par l'art ? Sa vie, racontée par Kubin lui-même ne nous incite pas à conclure ainsi. Là où nous sommes confrontés à la névrose étrangère et toute constituée, écrit Freud à peu près à l'époque même où Kubin écrit L'Autre côté, dans la vie nous appellerons le médecin et tiendrons la figure pour inapte à la scène. Pourtant, sans remontrer à Jérôme Bosch, à Goya, en tout cas à tous ceux que Kubin admira, jusqu'à Odilon Redon et James Ensor, une bonne partie des oeuvres offensives du XXe siècle n'ont-elles pas consisté, malgré les réticences de Freud, à tirer un peu de jouissance de beaucoup de souffrance, et sans réveiller en nous forcément sadisme et masochisme, à nous inviter, à défaut de pâmoisons devant la beauté, ou de complaisances avec la douleur, à de la compassion devant cette souffrance ? L'oeuvre de Kubin n'est pas exempte de bonté lorsqu'il prend pour finir pitié de son persécuteur moribond, et qu'il va jusqu'à trouver de la beauté à son cadavre : L'image d'un dieu antique ! Comme il est beau ! - mais il y a encore, dans cette oeuvre, une autre source de plaisir dont nous souhaitons que l'opéra la fasse aussi sourdre pour le spectateur, c'est une espèce d'humour rocambolesque et glauque qui rend souvent les pulsions des personnages burlesques, leur sexualité, franchement saugrenue, leurs extases, ridicules ! Telles sont quelques-unes des questions que le musicien et le librettiste se sont d'abord posées, avant le metteur en scène Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota, qui a si intimement adhéré au projet aussitôt qu'il l'a connu et qui y a fait entrer de plain pied ses collaborateurs - telle est cette étrange entreprise qu'il nous plaît à tous trois de regarder encore aujourd'hui comme risquée. Vérifier que le public voudra bien courir le risque avec nous est notre plus cher désir. François Regnault Presse Bruno Mantovani aborde, à bientôt trente-deux ans, son premier opéra avec l'ambition de rendre au fantastique du roman d'Alfred Kubin (1877-1959) sa force originale et son étrangeté narrative. L'Autre côté, fable sans morale, met en scène l'Empire du rêve, absurde refuge contre tout progrès, qui plonge dans le chaos après avoir été soustrait à la dictature de son chef Patéra. Récit admirable et visionnaire, accompagné par l'auteur d'effrayantes illustrations, il a marqué l'Europe centrale littéraire et artistique du début du XXe siècle. Bruno Mantovani, associé au dramaturge François Regnault et au metteur en scène Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota, cherche à rendre le mouvement perpétuel de cet effondrement. L'orchestre y est vaste et brillant, incluant six percussions dont le rôle est d'élargir l'espace sonore. Le choeur - cette masse grouillante proche des images apocalyptiques de Kubin - mobilise et anime la scène. Les rôles solistes enfin se répartissent autour du narrateur, Alfred Kubin lui-même, personnage central emporté dans ce drame sans fin. Cette création mondiale constitue l'élément fédérateur du portrait consacré au jeune compositeur français par Musica, en collaboration avec l'Opéra national du Rhin. Musica Antoine Gindt

Par JARRELL MICHAEL. J'ai toujours été attiré par la danse et souvent j'ai souhaité écrire une musique de ballet. J'entends par là une musique conçue pour la danse et, si possible, écrire en collaboration avec un chorégraphe. Cette collaboration porterait avant tout sur les questions de forme et de structure. Le ballet de chambre Essaims-Cribles constitue un premier pas dans cette voie. Bien que réalisé sans chorégraphie, il a été conçu pour la danse. Pour cela, je suis parti de la représentation du mouvement, de figures géométriques, de description d'images. Toutefois, ces recettes restent personnelles et pour une création dansée, le chorégraphe conserverait bien sur sa liberté d'interprétation. Je pense néanmoins que la relation avec une musique écrite pour ballet ne pourra pas être la même qu'avec une musique imaginée par le chorégraphe, qui lui plaît et qui l'attire. Je pense que l'échange serait alors plus fort et plus profond. Michael Jarrell Si la voix est absente d'Essaims-cribles, le texte y est quant à lui inscrit: des vers de Patrick Weidmann, poète et peintre, ami de Jarrell, talonnent en effet la partition. Impulsion poétique plus que programme (l'oeuvre est conçue pour le ballet, mais pensée encore une fois en termes de 'mouvement, figures géométriques'), il sert de titre aux différentes parties: ESSAIMS-CRIBLES INHALE D'URGENCE TEMPETE-ARC D'ANGLE S'IMMISCE A PERTE LONGITUDE CURVISME ABATTU TANGENCE FACIALE ENTRE RESSACS ENTAMES APESANTEUR DEFAITE La première phrase du poème, qui devient le titre de l'oeuvre, est aussi une image explicite d'un des procédés d'écriture utilisés par le compositeur: les 'essaims' sont des 'rubans' de notes enchaînées rapidement et en valeurs rythmiques égales (matériau repris au début d'Assonance, pour clarinette seule, et fournissant l'un des multiples exemples de la tendance 'rhizomatique' de l'oeuvre de Jarrell). La répartition statistique des hauteurs dans un ambitus donné - autour de l'octave - rappelle certains procédés utilisés par Ligeti. Le 'crible' consiste à éliminer ces notes pour ne garder que certaines hauteurs, et résulte en une fixation sur des hauteurs privilégiées, matérialisée le plus souvent sous forme de séquences en notes répétées. Intervient alors un jeu de dosage entre 'rubans' de notes et notes répétées. La clarinette basse soliste émerge de cette texture globale à la mesure 13, perçue comme soliste à partir de l'élargissement soudain de l'ambitus dans lequel elle évolue. Les différentes parties désignées par les vers du poème correspondent nettement à des changements de textures et donnent l'impression de répondre également au traitement local de petites structures. A la mesure 49, les rubans seront repris avec une plus grande amplitude pour aboutir à des figures plus irrégulières, plus sporadiques. Au fragment de texte 's'immisce' correspond un solo de clarinette basse où se déploie une belle ligne mélodique aux intervalles tendus, dont Jarrell précise qu'il doit être 'très lyrique'. La section 'longitude' (lettres H à M) constitue un premier exemple de ces passages en suspension qui sont comme une parenthèse hors temps dans le déroulement de la pièce. On y rencontre un alliage de sons résonants, de sons multiphoniques, de jeu de cordes flautando ou en harmoniques, de trilles en multiphoniques à la clarinette basse, de tenues légères aux bois. La fin de l'oeuvre fournit un nouvel exemple de suspension du discours. Si le relatif statisme de la texture sert à ménager dans '...entre ressacs entamés' (lettre T) un arrière-plan sur lequel se dégagera le solo de clarinette contrebasse (mes. 285), le fragment poétique associé à la dernière section ('apesanteur défaite', lettre X) apparaît comme un véritable programme, tant est manifeste la sensation d'échapper à une force de gravité musicale. Le corollaire de cet état d'apesanteur est une impression de débrayage temporel momentané, une échappée hors temps directionnel. Par un jeu subtil de fausses répétitions et de faux repères cycliques - les transformations, qui affectent à la fois le rythme, la disposition harmonique et la présentation mélodique, produisent un paysage toujours changeant -, Jarrell parvient à créer une ambiance hypnotique proche de celle que procure l'observation des lents mouvements d'un mobile. On notera au passage le clin d'oeil discret au thème célèbre du générique de la série télévisée 'Mission impossible' ! La répétition est un des aspects importants d'Essaims-cribles, et elle intervient à plusieurs niveaux. A l'échelle de la forme globale, on peut déceler aux deux tiers de la pièce (lettre R) un retour à la situation initiale, mais sous forme condensée. De même certaines séquences de notes balisent le discours par leur récurrence. A l'échelle locale, on retiendra le principe observable à la dernière page de la partition: une section de quatre mesures reprise ad libitum au moins trois fois, avec un decrescendo progressif. Ce type de fin, assez fréquent chez le compositeur, sera développé dans Assonance V. La cantate est une et fragmentée, c'est une narration librement relancée, souvent interceptée par son propre commentaire. Son fonds d'images serait comme partagé, ainsi que devait l'être, à l'époque de Bach, l'histoire biblique. J'ai souhaité que ces cantates, qui sont une dramaturgie sans action explicite, soient pourtant mises en profondeur, en lumières, en mots aussi, par un artiste venant du spectacle. J'en ai fait la proposition à Daniel Lévy avec qui j'ai déjà eu la chance de collaborer. Ces trois cantates sont distinctes, elles ont des effectifs vocaux et instrumentaux légèrement différents, mais une diagonale les traverse, qui passe par la poésie profonde et sidérante de Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) où se concentrent une méditation sur la présence de Dieu et une observation de la nature, de ses éléments dont la musique elle-même est une part atmosphérique. On retrouve un écho à la question de Dieu et au décor planté dans les deux textes contemporains des cantates 1 (Mathieu Nuss) et 3 (Elena Andreyev). Ces cantates adoptent une forme en numéros successifs, souvent brefs, enchaînés ou non. On trouve, par exemple dans la première, des chorals, des airs, des récitatifs, même si rien dans la musique (à part peut-être le son d'un orgue) ne fait allusion à l'univers baroque - si ce n'est aussi (dans la deuxième cantate) l'utilisation du poème de Manley Hopkins en hommage à Henry Purcell. L'électronique est ici la tentative qui prolonge et met en danger le poème (et non moins le musicien). Elle est pour moi l'aventure par excellence - ma première véritable incursion dans ce domaine. Foi en le poème, doute en l'électronique. Ce qui les lie est une sorte d'instrumentalisation dont la technique du sample devient le précipité poétique, changé ici en un clavier de sensations. Samples de voix, de vents, de pluies, de souffles, de train dans le lointain, d'horloges et d'oiseaux. Le murmure du monde - ce Naturlaut dont parlait Gustav Mahler - rentre tout entier dans une boîte à merveilles, laissant voir ses coutures (jusqu'aux gimmicks des boîtes à rythmes), mais non moins son aspiration presque enfantine à se fondre dans toutes les voix, à les épouser, à les déplier comme un de ces génies des contes orientaux qui sortent de la lampe à huile si on la frotte - et ici, on frotte beaucoup. Puis à son tour le sample, qui est affaire de cadrage serré, réensemence les instruments qui deviennent greffons de clavier. L'électronique, dans les trois cantates, est délibérément non spatialisée. Elle doit former avec les instruments et les voix, tous amplifiés, un son homogène et centré qui délimite l'espace du jeu, celui de la parole. L'électronique (sauf dans la cantate 2, où elle assume davantage la fonction d'un décor sonore) est le plus souvent fondue avec les musiciens en un méta-instrument. A aucun moment l'électronique n'affirme de puissance, de brillance. Sa présence, souvent indiscernable, est un point de fuite de l'écoute, comme une perturbation qu'on peut intégrer pleinement à l'image sonore, ou bien laisser opérer comme un venin légèrement urticant du timbre. Jachère aidant La première cantate, sur un texte du poète Mathieu Nuss, écrit spécialement pour cette occasion, est une sorte de cantate express, liquide, changeante, bruissante, parfois fredonnée, chaque unité étant extrêmement brève. Un narrateur semble livrer sa vision de manière joueuse, souvent interrogative. Le découpage est lui-même rapide, comme le story-board d'une histoire à développer, mais donnée là dans l'urgence. L'électronique est liée au clavier de sensations dont j'ai parlé, conçu à partir de bruits quotidiens ou atmosphériques qui, peu à peu, se changent en gammes musicales et en clavier chantant. Par DE HAAN JACOB. Missa Brevis est une messe pour Orchestre d’Harmonie et Choeur composée à la demande du Conseil Départemental pour la Musique et la Culture de Haute-Alsace (Dir. : Philippe Pfisterer) de Guebwiller en France, à l’occasion des célébrations dumillénaire de la naissance du Pape Léon IX à Éguisheim. La création mondiale a eu lieu le 23 juin 2002 sous la direction du compositeur, et a été diffusée en direct sur la chaîne de télévision nationale France 2. Les différentes parties de cettemesse ( Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus et Agnus Dei ) conviennent autant à la liturgie catholique qu’à la liturgie protestante. Missa Brevis peut être interprétée dans différentes combinaisons instrumentales. Ellepeut être jouée dans une version purement instrumentale, où les cuivres prennent en charge la partie vocale. En tel cas, il est conseillé de placer les cuivres à l’écart de la formation (sur une estrade, par exemple) de façon à reproduire l’idée dedeux groupes indépendants. Dans le cadre d’une interprétation avec un grand Choeur, les cuivres jouent un rôle de soutien. Leurs nuances doivent alors être adaptées dans la mesure où elles ont été écrites, à l’origine, pour une version instrumentale. Il est également possible de ne pas faire intervenir les cuivres et de privilégier le Choeur. Pour accompagner de petits ensembles vocaux, il faut opter pour une formation instrumentale réduite voire même un Quatuor (instrumentation au choix). Pourl’interprétation de cette messe l’un des choix proposés ci-dessus s’impose. Il existe néanmoins une alternative qui consiste à interpréter cette oeuvre en combinant ces options (vocales / instrumentales). Cela peut être bénéfique tant d’un point devue artistique (variante) que pratique dans le cas où le Choeur n’a travaillé que deux mouvements de la messe. Si le chef dispose de deux formations complètes (Choeur et Orchestre d’Harmonie), il peut varier l’instrumentation selon ses préférences. Àce moment-là, il peut confier un rôle d’accompagnement et non de soutien aux cuivres de sa formation. Les combinaisons suivantes peuvent être formées : 1. Choeur de Clarinettes (de la Clarinette Mib à la Clarinette Basse) 2. Choeur de Clarinettes + Saxophones 3. Cuivres (Bugles, Cors, Barytons / Euphoniums, Basses) 4. Cuivres (2 Trompettes / 2 Trombones) 5. Instruments à anches doubles (Flûte et Contrebasse à cordes optionnelles) 6. Tutti 7. Tous les Bois 8. Tous les Cuivres Dans le cadre d’une interprétation par un Brass Band accompagné d’un Choeur, il est préférable de supprimer l’option 1 (Choeur + Cuivres + Orchestre d’Harmonie) car le Choeur étant autonome. Par MURAIL TRISTAN. Time and Again tente de rompre, partiellement, avec l'esthétique qui domine dans mes oeuvres précédentes, une esthétique de la continuité où la forme est structurée par des processus se déroulant en un flot presque ininterrompu. Ici, la forme musicale cherche à créer une architecture du temps plus complexe, qui joue de flash-backs, prémonitions, boucles..., comme si l'on se trouvait dans une sorte de machine à remonter le temps. Pour néanmoins préserver une sorte de continuité sous-jacente, j'ai d'abord imaginé une structure 'linéaire' pour la pièce, comportant des évolutions progressives et logiques, et j'ai parfois réalisé des fragments de cette pièce virtuelle, puis, un peu comme un cinéaste, j'ai 'monté' la structure de la pièce, en coupant, dupliquant, insérant, collant. A peu près aux deux tiers de la pièce, le temps s'inverse et s'écoule deux fois plus vite - on repasse, plus symboliquement que textuellement, par toutes les étapes des deux premiers tiers, avec parfois des superpositions, des inserts ou des raccourcis. L'orchestration n'est pas tout à fait conventionnelle - les vents et la percussion sont en nombre habituel, mais les cordes sont réduites à environ la moitié de l'effectif normal. J'ai cherché ainsi une qualité particulière du son des cordes moins volumineux, mais plus intense. Les cordes jouent le plus souvent des parties individuelles. Leur emploi principal consiste à colorer ou distordre les sons joués par les autres instruments, ou à construire des spectres sonores complexes. L'orchestre est enrichi par un synthétiseur (un Yamaha DX7) qui a deux principales fonctions. Grâce à son aptitude à synthétiser des sons par modulation de fréquence, il peut émettre directement des spectres riches identiques à ceux que j'utilise dans mon écriture orchestrale. La composition de cette pièce a donc impliqué d'abord la programmation des sons sur le synthétiseur (un seul son peut produire une texture très riche et n'est souvent utilisé qu'une seule fois). Dans d'autres cas, je l'utilise comme un complément de la section des percussions et du piano, le synthétiseur ayant la tâche d'émettre les sons non tempérés. Time and Again est une commande du 'John Feeney Charitable Trust' pour le City of Birmigham Symphony Orchestra, et a été créé à Birmingham le 21 janvier 1986 par cet orchestre, sous la direction de Simon Rattle. La pièce était destinée à être jouée en première partie de la Turangalila Symphonie d'Olivier Messiaen, pour une série de concerts en Angleterre. Cela explique qu'un auditeur attentif trouvera peut-être quelques allusions à cette symphonie dans Time and Again... Toute la poétique du compositeur français, un théâtre de lumières et d'intermittences, investit l'espace scénique des cantates : une machinerie minutieuse de gestes instrumentaux, d'objets trouvés, détournés ou fabriqués - les ciels acoustiques, l'orgue de verre. La dramaturgie se souvient du découpage baroque avec ses mouvements à configuration variable, les rythmes de danse ou l'alternance entre solistes et ensemble. Dans ce pays-cantate qui est tout à la fois trace et mémoire, origine et destination, l'écriture vive du présent (les textes du jeune Mathieu Nuss ou d'Elena Andreyev) est interrompue par la visitation du passé, ici l'immense poésie de Gérard Manley Hopkins et sa vision d'une nature transfigurée. Extrait du programme du Festival Agora J'ai voulu ces cantates comme un théâtre intérieur, un théâtre de mots où le paysage de la musique, son mouvement panoramique, sa vitesse, sont le poème. Poème ami, d'abord supputé, appelé, discuté, biffé, dit et redit. Texte construit par lectures passionnées qui devient la préfiguration exacte du temps de la musique. Alors, musique et poème font territoire. Ils sont l'un à l'autre le pays. La cantate est opéra de climats, respiration articulée dans laquelle la musique devient didascalie du poème, son envers scandé. La cantate est une et fragmentée, c'est une narration librement relancée, souvent interceptée par son propre commentaire. Son fonds d'images serait comme partagé, ainsi que devait l'être, à l'époque de Bach, l'histoire biblique. J'ai souhaité que ces cantates, qui sont une dramaturgie sans action explicite, soient pourtant mises en profondeur, en lumières, en mots aussi, par un artiste venant du spectacle. J'en ai fait la proposition à Daniel Lévy avec qui j'ai déjà eu la chance de collaborer. Ces trois cantates sont distinctes, elles ont des effectifs vocaux et instrumentaux légèrement différents, mais une diagonale les traverse, qui passe par la poésie profonde et sidérante de Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889) où se concentrent une méditation sur la présence de Dieu et une observation de la nature, de ses éléments dont la musique elle-même est une part atmosphérique. On retrouve un écho à la question de Dieu et au décor planté dans les deux textes contemporains des cantates 1 (Mathieu Nuss) et 3 (Elena Andreyev). Ces cantates adoptent une forme en numéros successifs, souvent brefs, enchaînés ou non. On trouve, par exemple dans la première, des chorals, des airs, des récitatifs, même si rien dans la musique (à part peut-être le son d'un orgue) ne fait allusion à l'univers baroque - si ce n'est aussi (dans la deuxième cantate) l'utilisation du poème de Manley Hopkins en hommage à Henry Purcell. L'électronique est ici la tentative qui prolonge et met en danger le poème (et non moins le musicien). Elle est pour moi l'aventure par excellence - ma première véritable incursion dans ce domaine. Foi en le poème, doute en l'électronique. Ce qui les lie est une sorte d'instrumentalisation dont la technique du sample devient le précipité poétique, changé ici en un clavier de sensations. Samples de voix, de vents, de pluies, de souffles, de train dans le lointain, d'horloges et d'oiseaux. Le murmure du monde - ce Naturlaut dont parlait Gustav Mahler - rentre tout entier dans une boîte à merveilles, laissant voir ses coutures (jusqu'aux gimmicks des boîtes à rythmes), mais non moins son aspiration presque enfantine à se fondre dans toutes les voix, à les épouser, à les déplier comme un de ces génies des contes orientaux qui sortent de la lampe à huile si on la frotte - et ici, on frotte beaucoup. Puis à son tour le sample, qui est affaire de cadrage serré, réensemence les instruments qui deviennent greffons de clavier. L'électronique, dans les trois cantates, est délibérément non spatialisée. Elle doit former avec les instruments et les voix, tous amplifiés, un son homogène et centré qui délimite l'espace du jeu, celui de la parole. L'électronique (sauf dans la cantate 2, où elle assume davantage la fonction d'un décor sonore) est le plus souvent fondue avec les musiciens en un méta-instrument. A aucun moment l'électronique n'affirme de puissance, de brillance. Sa présence, souvent indiscernable, est un point de fuite de l'écoute, comme une perturbation qu'on peut intégrer pleinement à l'image sonore, ou bien laisser opérer comme un venin légèrement urticant du timbre. God's Grandeur Cette cantate, d'après quatre poèmes de Gerard Manley Hopkins, forme un moment suspendu, découpé selon des unités poétiques auxquelles correspondent ce que j'ai appelé des ciels acoustiques, sortes de monochromes électroniques, cyclos sonores minimaux sur lesquels les voix et les instruments se posent : basse fréquence, ou hyper aiguë, impression sonore de ciel étoilé, bruit de vaporetto au loin, etc. Le son peut sembler parfois comme un léger parasite qui entame l'écoute. Un petit clavier de verre dialogue avec des échantillonnages d'orgue véritable. C'est la plus hiératique, la plus chantée et récitative, la plus sombre aussi des trois cantates. Gérard Pesson

La nouvelle collection Primo ('Urtext Primo-Reihe') de la Wiener Urtext Edition ('édition viennoise - texte original') a pour objectif de remédier au manque qui existe entre la fin de l'étude d'une méthode de piano et le passage à la suite du processus sous forme de cours. Au sortir d'un niveau défini dans ses grandes lignes par le menuet en sol de Bach (BWV Anh. 116), le menuet en fa de Mozart (KV 5) ou le Cavalier sauvage de Schumann, chaque cahier du Urtext Primo-Reihe se compose d'oeuvres choisies parmi celles de trois compositeurs différents, le but étant d'offrir à chaque élève de piano (ou à chaque adulte reprenant le piano) un éventail de morceaux du répertoire à l'aide desquels on sera en mesure de continuer à développer ses capacités techniques. Le cadre de difficulté des pièces est défini avec une relative étroitesse de manière à permettre une utilisation continue du volume sur une période d'environ deux ans. C'est en cela que le concept de 'Urtext Primo-Reihe' se distingue de presque tous les autres albums ou recueils. Dans le choix du répertoire, on tient compte de la nécessité d'y faire figurer des pièces habituelles au cadre du cours de piano classique, d'une part, mais aussi d'autre part des pièces moins connues dont la pertinence dans un cours de piano n'est pas moindre. Les volumes de la collection Urtext Primo-Reihe sont publiés au standard international de la Wiener Urtext-Ausgabe. Les explications adjointes à chaque volume ont pour objet d'approfondir les connaissances en matière de styles, d'histoire de la musique, et de données spécifiques au piano. Un tableau du répertoire porté à la fin de chaque volume donne une idée très globale de la difficulté des pièces y figurant. Le volume 6 de Urtext Primo contient, avec Clementi, Czerny et Cramer, des pièces de piano faciles de trois compositeurs qui ont tous trois fait partie du premier rang des pédagogues du piano, ayant composé pour lui des méthodes et des pièces de répertoire d'étude. De Muzio Clementi, il n'existe pas seulement une sélection de ses sonatines les plus populaires, les pièces choisies de Carl Czerny démontrent qu'on n'a pas toujours besoin des vieilles recettes de leçons de piano, tandis que Johann Baptist Cramer (rendu célèbre par les Etudes de Cramer-Bülow) est l'auteur d'un répertoire qui n'est pas exclusivement destiné aux pianistes de haut niveau. / Piano
