In the jazz tradition the Tuba was the bass in the rhythm section up until the mid-twenties. It was then the upright bass replaced the Tuba in many ensembles as the jazz music moved north and continued to develop. After this period the Tuba's roll, as bass in the rhythm section, was at a standstill and did not develop through Swing and Bebop. It wasn't until Cool Jazz of the 1950's when the Tuba was used by Miles Davis and Gil Evans in 'Birth of the Cool' as an ensemble horn. The Tuba, like swimming, is something you can't do any longer than you can hold your breath. In order to maintain a steady beat while playing in the rhythm section I have developed a system of breathing called Pant Breathing. Using this method, the player can maintain a steady beat within the rhythm section, without losing time while taking deep breaths.

Composed by Roger Boutry, Tubaroqueis a melodious piece of baroque music for Tuba, Bb Bass Saxhorn or Bass Trombone with Piano accompaniment. Quite difficult, it would be perfect for advanced players and would work well in a concert. Starting with a small introduction in three measures, the first part of the piece begins on a Slow Waltz movement which consists of a main theme with two variations, including one played an octave lower. The second part Allegretto is more lyrical and the last one Moderato/Allegro, starts like a march to then go back to a more melodious finale. Roger Boutry is a French musician and contemporary composer who received eight First Prizes at the Conservatoire, including composition, conducting and Piano. He also won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1954 and some prizes by the SACEM and by the city of Paris. He also got involved as a professor of Harmony and director of Orchestras..

“Jean-Michel Defaye's Sea Suite is a really nice set of six pieces portraying sea animals. Written for Bb Saxhorn, Bass Tuba or Euphonium, with Piano accompaniment, these six pieces are of medium/high difficulty. Each piece tries to re-create the main characteristics of the animal depicted, such as their weight, using the low range of the instruments and their speed, with the Dolphin being faster and lighter than the Sea Lion for example. The Piano accompaniment also uses numerous atonal chords. It features: 1. L'otarie - The Sea Lion, 1'35' 2. Le cachalot - The Sperm Whale, 1'30' 3. Le requin - The Shark, 1'20' 4.
