Doc Watson was a legendary performer who blended his traditional Appalachian musical roots with bluegrass country gospel and blues to create a unique style and an expansive repertoire. His flatpicking style elevated the acoustic guitar to solo status in bluegrass and country music and whose interpretations of traditional American music profoundly influenced generations of folk and rock guitarists.Doc was born in Deep Gap North Carolina on March 3 1923 into a family already rich in musical tradition. His mother Annie Watson sang traditional secular and religious songs and his father General Watson played the banjo which was Doc's first instrument as well.In 1953 Doc met Jack Williams a local piano player and played rockabilly/swing music for seven years a period and a style that he later revisited in the album Docabilly. But he also continued to play acoustic traditional music with his family and with his banjo playing neighbor Clarence Tom Ashley. In 1960 spurred by the growing folk revival folklorists Ralph Rinzler and Eugene Earle came south to record Ashley and heard Doc Watson in the process. These sessions resulted in Doc's first recordings Old-Time Music at Clarence Ashley's.In 1961 the Friends of Old-Time Music invited Doc Ashley Clint Howard and Fred Price to perform at a now-legendary concert in New York City and one year later Doc gave his first solo performance at Gerde's Folk City in Greenwich Village. From then on he was a full-time professional playing a wide range of concerts clubs colleges and festivals including the Newport Folk Festival and Carnegie Hall.In the late 1960s Doc was joined on the road by his son Merle who provided both musical and emotional companionship; with Merle playing guitar and banjo and serving as partner and driver the father-son team expanded their audience nationwide. Sadly Merle died in 1985 from a tractor accident.A series of over 50 remarkable recordings including collaborations with Flatt & Scruggs Chet Atkins and

Story Of Jazz As Told By The Men Who Made It. Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. ? Charlie Parker What is jazz? The rhythm ? the feeling. ? Coleman Hawkins The best sound usually comes the first time you do something. If it's spontaneous, it's going to be rough, not clean, but it's going to have the spirit which is the essence of jazz. ? Dave Brubeck Here, in their own words, such famous jazz musicians as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Fletcher Henderson, Bunk Johnson, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Clarence Williams, Jo Jones, Jelly Roll Morton, Mezz Mezzrow, Billie Holiday, and many others recall the birth, growth, and changes in jazz over the years. From its beginnings at the turn of the twentieth century in the red-light district in New Orleans (or Storyville, as it came to be known), to Chicago's Downtown section and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and Chicago's South Side to jam sessions in Kansas City to Harlem during the Depression years, the West Coast and modern developments, the story of jazz is vividly and colorfully documented in hundreds of personal interviews, letters, tape recorded and telephone conversations, and excerpts from previously printed articles that appeared in books and magazines. There is no more fascinating and lively history of jazz than this firsthand telling by the men who made it. It should be read and re-read by all jazz enthusiasts, musicians, students of music and culture, students of American history, and other readers. A lively book bearing the stamp of honesty and naturalness. ? Library Journal. A work of considerable substance. ? The New Yorker. Some of the quotations are a bit racy but they give the book a wonderful flavor. ? San Francisco Chronicle.

David Bromberg is known as the leader of one of the most successful acoustic bands of the 1970\'s and 1980\'s. The Kitchen Girl, a fine Kentucky tune, is an example of Bromberg\'s good taste in choosing material. Dick Fegy is a master picker of fiddle tunes and is the most heavily-featured player in the collection. San Francisco Bay area favorite Eric Thompson crosses old-time with traditional Irish playing. Michael Aumen contributes three tunes associated with Clarence White and a very interesting version of Soldier\'s Joy, with a flair that pushes the limits ofthe hot country style.

FINGERSTYLE BLUES GUITAR Guitar notes and tablatures Mel Bay
The musical appeal of the Blues, as they began to be heard in the early twentiet...(+)
The musical appeal of the Blues, as they began to be heard in the early twentieth century, was so infectious that musicians with open minds and ears were drawn to it as soon as they heard it. And that appeal crossed the racial and ethnic divides that characterized American society. So it was, that even before African American guitarists were recorded playing fingerstyle blues guitar, their white neighbors had already begun learning the music?listening to, watching, and imitating the musicians whose music they so admired. And what these white musicians ended up expressing in their own playing and singing was not simply imitation, but their own reconfiguration of what their models did, played in accordance with their own senses of rhythm, phrasing and how to sing the music. In Hillbilly Fingerstyle Blues Guitar, author John Miller offers transcriptions, in tablature and standard notation, of twenty-eight pieces by these white fingerstyle blues players, taken from recordings made in the period 1926?1970. Some of the featured musicians in the book, like Sam McGee, Frank Hutchison, Maybelle Carter, Hobart Smith, and Roscoe Holcomb are pretty well known, but the tunes by more obscure players like Debs Mays, Lake Howard, or Lester McFarland certainly don?t suffer by comparison, and in many instances are spectacular. The pieces have been chosen for variety, too?you?ll encounter pieces played in C, E, and A in standard tuning, as well as songs in Open G, Open D tunings and an exotic offshoot of Open G tuning. Downloadable links to all of the original performances from which the transcriptions were made come with the book, so you can get the sound of the tunes in your head. The musicians in Hillbilly Fingerstyle Blues Guitar gravitated towards the Blues because the music spoke to them so strongly that they felt compelled to make it part of their own musical language. And they did just that. These performances are strong and worthwhile in their own right, but they?ll also show you how you can honor those who have inspired you by singing and playing in your own voice. And that?s an important lesson to learn. Includes access to online audio. 1. Hillbilly Fingerstyle Blues Guitar ? An Introduction 2. Learning the Songs 3. Understanding the Tablature 4. As the Country Blues began to be recorded in the mid-1920s it soon became apparent that the music was being played and appreciated not only by African-American musicians and audiences but by white musicians and audiences as well. Many of these white musicians played with and learned from black musicians for even in the Jim Crow Era there was always a good deal of musical interaction and exchange. So it is that the term 'Hillbilly Blues' can be used to describe the music made by white musicians of that era in the Country Blues style. Included on this DVD are songs from Clarence Greene known mostly as a fiddler but an ace guitarist Dick Justice who in his one dayin the recording studio waxed ten masterful performances Frank Hutchison who excelled at lap slide harmonica on a rack and conventional blues picking Sam McGee a banjo and guitar master who went on to star on the Grand Ole Opry Hobart Smith a musical powerhouse Maybelle Carter a rocksteady and beautifully lyrical player who may have been the most influential of the bunch and Emry Arthur a soulful singer and player who recorded one of the earliest versions of Man Of Constant Sorrow. The songs selected for inclusion on the DVD have been chosen to introduce you to a variety of different keys and playing positions as well as a host of different right hand techniques.A PDF included on the DVD offers not only detailed transcriptions of the songs but the songs' lyrics too.
