L?expérience appliquée en premier lieu avec mes élèves est réellement enrichissante : elle révèle l?importance du rythme renforce la musicalité la motivation et surtout amène le partage de la musique et l?écoute de l?autre.Comme anecdote?j?ai donné à un élève de six ans qui en était à son deuxième cours l?étude d?une des premières pièces de ce recueil. Par TCHAIKOVSKI PIOTR ILITCH. The Nutcracker Suite is a piano arrangement of the concert version of the ballet of that name. Tchaikovsky used only part of the music for the ballet in the suite. The Overture, and the March which is the most important of the characteristic dances in the Suite, come from the first act of the ballet. The remaining dances originate from the second act. They are: The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, in which the leading part is, in the original composition, played typically by the celeste almost all the way through; the fiery Russian 'Trepak' which reminds us of Tchaikovsky's national origins; the Arab Dance tinged with a gentle melancholy; the Chinese Dance with its tripping ostinato rhythm; the graceful Dance of the Reed Flutes; and finally the longest piece in the Suite: the Waltz of the Flowers in which Tchaikovsky, writing in the penultimate year of his life, showed his musical affinity with Johann Strauss. The Nutcracker Suite was perfomed for the first time, with great success, on 7 March 1892 at the Ninth Symphony Concert of the Russian Musical Society in St Petersburg./ Répertoire / Piano 4 Mains

Version for Piano four-Hands-Grieg?s incidental music for Henrik Ibsen?s drama ?Peer Gynt? contains some of his best-known compositions such as ?Morning Mood? and ?In the hall of the Mountain King?.Grieg later extracted the most beautiful pieces to form two Orchestral suites and arranged himself these versions for Piano solo and Piano four-hands. There was a surprise in store for Henle when they werepreparing this Urtext edition. In the autograph and the first print run the second suite contained another movement the ?Dance of the Mountain King?s Daughter? which Grieg deleted shortly afterwards. Thischarming dance appears in the appendix to this edition printed again for the first time in 120 years! The Norwegian pianist and Grieg expert Einar Steen-Nøkleberg was co-editor for this edition and alsoprovided the new fingerings.

Gregory Stone has transcribed these three selected preludes for one piano-four hands. For much of his life George Gershwin sought to integrate the worlds of jazz and classical music. These pieces are not jazz improvisations but they do show something of the style of his own playing. Gershwin had intended to compose a set of twelve a sort of jazz Wohltemperierte Clavier but his unexpected death from a brain tumour at the age of 38 prevented this. At least seven survive (others may have ended up as songs) and this set of three as published form a satisfying unit. The first opens with a blue-note riff which forms the basis of the first theme.Contrasting material follows making use of a distinctive repeated note figure then the first idea reappears in a quasi-orchestral climax. The second prelude shows a curious kinship with Chopin???s A minor Prelude with its eerie accompaniment and hypnotic melody. The third exploits a similar major/minor ambivalence but dextrous syncopation gives it driving rhythmic energy.

Upon entering a painting was written in 2008/09 and it was commissioned with funding from the Britten-Pears Foundation and the RVW Trust by Piano 4 Hands (Joseph Tong and Waka Hasegawa) to whom it is dedicated. The inspiration of the piece was the kind of painting which as you gaze at it seems to draw the onlooker into the frame indeed into the very paint itself. The specific trigger for the idea of the piece was the Rothko Exhibition at Tate Modern in 2008 Rothko has long been a favourite painter of mine even though his creative world is very different from my own. However there were one or two paintings in the exhibition in which I felt strongly this sense of beingdrawn into the inner life of the painting especially when I was able to incur the wrath of the curators and step close to the paintings and examine the surface in detail. The opening and closing sections of the piece with their gradual thickening of the harmonies and (at the end) equally gradual thinning reflect this sense of stepping forward into and backward out of the works. The inner life of the faster sections while apparently very un-Rothko-like reflects the extraordinary teeming inner life of the brush-strokes.

This took the form of a musical background to Jean de Brunhoff's popular illustrated children's story about Babar a baby elephant whose mother is killed by ahuntsman. Fortunately Babar meets a kind elderly lady who dresses him in a fine suit and gives him an impressive motor-car.However Babar feels homesick for his forests and is pleased when his cousins Arthur and Celeste find him and needs no persuasion to go home with them. Back in the forest where the King of the Elephants has eaten a poisonous mushroom Babar is elected to succeed as King. He marries Celeste and the last we hear of him isthinking of a rosy future as he dreamily looks up at a marvellously star-filled sky.Poulenc's score to which he returned and completed in 1945 is for a narrator and a Piano so written that the individualsections offer the pianist a number of self-contained descriptive pieces such as a Lullaby a Reverie a Galop a Nocturne and so on. Indeed some of Poulenc's finest Piano music isfound in these charming pages.In 1962 Jean Françaix made an orchestral version and Barbar has been enjoyed by children of all ages all over the world. An English translation of the text was made by Nelly Rieu.Thisparticular edition is arranged for Narrator and Piano duet (1 Piano 4 hands) and a separate insert with English translation is included.

Jean-François Tapray (1738-1819), né à Nomeny en Lorraine, fit une bonne partie de sa carrière à Dole puis Besançon avant de servir à Paris où on le signale comme organiste à la chapelle de l'Ecole royale militaire peu avant la Révolution. Il meurt à Fontainebleau vers 1819. Cette sonate à quatre mains, qui date probablement de 1800, est un véritable chef-d'oeuvre très inspiré par l'école viennoise de ce temps. Elle fait grand effet au concert et a l'immense mérite de donner à jouer, de manière très équilibrée, aux deux instrumentistes.
