Inspiré du conte de Charles Perrault et des frères Grimm, La Belle au bois dormant est un ballet composé d?un prologue, de trois actes et cinq tableaux. Il reste le ballet le plus long de Tchaïkovski : sa représentation complète dure presque quatre heures !
Créé en 1890, le célèbre chorégraphe Marius Petipa y inscrit des mouvements d'ensemble construits avec rigueur, et des pas de solistes brillants qui figurent parmi les ?uvres les plus accomplies du répertoire classique de la danse. Le ballet reçut un accueil plus favorable que Le Lac des cygnes auprès de la presse, et le public, comme le Tsar (« très joli » fut sa seule remarque), témoignèrent un rapide engouement.Cependant, Tchaïkovski n'eut pas la chance de profiter du succès international de son ?uvre (il meurt en 1893).
Aujourd?hui, La Belle au bois dormant reste l?un des ballets les plus montés dans le monde.
