Volume VII/2 of Weber's Complete Works contains all of Carl Maria von Weber's extant, independent sets of variations for solo piano.Weber's piano variations were considered by contemporary music critics to be amongst the most successful compositions in this field. A review of the time states: His themes are interesting and idiosyncratically formed. They stand before us with a definite personality, showing us in each variation a new side to their character, a new characteristic situation from their life. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries.

Igor Stravinsky originally wrote the Danses concertantes for a California-based entertainment orchestra. However, the five movementsare more than purely orchestral dances. The piece is reminiscent of a ballet suite. The two marches at the beginning and end mark the entrance (prologue) and departure (epilogue) of the dancers, with two of the middle movements - 'pas d'action' and 'pas de deux' obviously alluding to the ballet. The arrangement for two pianos by Ingolf Dahl is not just a reduction of the orchestral writing, but deliberately intended as an independent concert version.

The Prelude, Hymn And Toccata 1987 is dedicated to, and was commissioned by the Nettle-Markham Piano Duo. It was the second work to have been written for them by the composer, the first being the Sonata For Piano Duet Op.92. This twenty minute work begins with Leighton's typical preludial double-dotted rhythms and contrapuntal textures; it develops into dark, passionate music and erupts into single and double cadenzas. The gentle Hymn is ushered in quietly and unfolds in long, rhapsodic sections, building up to more climactic cadenzas before dissolving gradually to an ethereal conclusion. The Toccata finale shows Leighton's masterly piano writing and contrasts biting, rhythmic motifs with sweeping, yearning elegiac phrases.

Here Rheinberger drew on his two-piano arrangement of the Goldberg Variations not only for the choice of instruments, but also for his arrangement technique. At times Mozart's piano part alternates between the two pianos, though usually new parts are added to flesh out the texture harmonically in various ways. Occasionally Rheinberger also adds motivic parts, though never with the same skill or density as in the Goldberg Variations. In this, however, he demonstrates a consummate sense of style precisely by adhering to the compositional fabric of his original models.
