In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe).When Johann Sebastian Bach created his six-part corpus of harpsichord concertos in 1738 (BWV 1052-1057) he gave pride of place to the Concerto in D minor BWV 1052. It has long been thought for good reasons that this piece was based on a lost violin concerto in the same key that he had already transcribed on twoprevious occasions.The second 'forerunner' of BWV 1052 is the present harpsichord concerto. It was first published by Wilhelm Rust in volume 17 of the old Bach Society Gesamtausgabe (1869) and given the number BWV 1052a in the Schmieder catalogue. Rust felt that Johann Sebastian Bach himself wrote out the principal source a set of orchestral parts preserved in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek under the shelf mark Mus. ms. St 350 and therefore treated the piece as an authentic early version of BWV 1052. Bartok wrote his Piano Concerto No.3 during the summer of 1945 intending it as a birthday present to his wife Ditta on 31st October. By this time he was already gravely ill; however he was able to finish the score with the exception of the last seventeen bars which he notated in a kind of musical shorthand. These last bars were later deciphered and scored by his pupil and friend Tibor Serly. This is a reduction for 2 Pianos four hands by Matyas Seiber.

Piano reduction-According to Mozart?s own catalogue K. 491 was completed on 24 March 1786 it was Mozart?s only Piano concerto aside from K. 466 that was in a minor key. It was probably first performed two weeks later aspart of an ?academy? at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Mozart was extremely pressed for time while composing this work a fact that is shown both by the cursory way in which the autograph was written and by therepeated corrections. Unlike earlier publications this edition contains the definitive version as in Mozart?s manuscript. The Piano reduction of this edition was undertaken by the celebrated pianist AndrásSchiff to whom we also already owe our reductions of the concertos K. 453 467 488 and 503 (HN 765 766 767 and 825). He also supplied the fingerings for the solo part the cadenzas and the lead-ins.

During his time Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.4 was continually dogged by criticism that it was work desperately seeking a style. Critics said the Fourth did not seem know where it was coming from or knew which way it was going. Concert goers who were swept away by the lyrical beauty of the Second and storming brilliance of the Third were expecting Rachmaninov's Fourth Concerto to have that similar emotional impact. Nevertheless there is a wonderful rhythmic tautness to this outstanding piece. The finale contains some of the Fourth's most attractive music. This particular work is a reduction for 2 pianos where the music's potency isn't compromised by it's lack ofan orchestra.

Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No.2 accurately and beautifully arranged for 2 Pianos. Composed in 1957 the premiere was given on 10th May in the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatoire conducted by Nikolai Ansonov. The piece is dedicated to and was first played by Dmitri's son Maxim Shostakovich.    This is an abridged version for two Pianos.

This Concerto was commissioned by C.E.M.A. for the Festival of Britain and was first performed on 22nd June 1951 by the Composer and the City of Belfast Orchestra. This is a reduction of the Concerto for 2 Pianos.

None other than András Schiff is collaborating with Henle Publishers for the edition of Mozart?s Piano concertos. His Piano reductions are aimed at amateurs rather than professionals; his fingerings forMozart?s solo part have been exquisitely fine-tuned and are inspiring; and where Mozart?s original cadenzas are missing Schiff?s stylistically perfected ones have been included.
