Looking On Darkness for Accordion solo was composed by Bent Sørensen in 2000. Programme note: It is in the attempt to recreate a lost world without any illusion of its feasibility that we find the Danish composer Bent Sørensen's beautiful and melancholic music. Sørensen one of the most frequently performed contemporary Scandinavian composers has taken the title Looking on Darkness from Shakespeare's Sonnet No. 27. The thematic and intellectually clearly constructed form in which the inherent emotion is centrally placed and which characterises the sonnet also forms the basis of Sørensen'scomposition which is dedicated to Frode Haltli. As in Shakespeare's sonnet the past memory arises in Sørensen's music as it were out of nothing out of the darkness the silence; the concrete rattle of the accordion buttons and the sensitive dripping notes in the opening section vibrate on the borderline between the concrete and the hereafter. Loss and mourning for that which is lost and will never come again flow into the fleeting and poetic tones and meld together; the music oscillates lingers holds tightly to the absence slackens its grip tries again moves carefully onwards like the fragmentary memories in Samuel Beckett's late prose before the sorrowful voice of the piece just as beautiful and unobtrusive withdraws again and leaves us to the silence to what used to be.

The cycle of nine Reliefs was written between 1984 and 1989, during the last period in Andrzej Krzanowski?s life, and it provides further evidence of his interest in the fine arts, which he exploited in his compositional work. The sculpture technique enabling an artist to create bas reliefs of varying degrees of convexity, for which the raw material is so important, is faithfully reflected in Relief II, where the accordion offers such possibilities for shaping the sound, dynamics, timbre and articulation that the narrative pursued in this work, involving the expansion and contraction of sound streams and the consistent processing of the raw material (whole tone ? semitone scale), creates a ?musical relief ?. This is not a dramatic or virtuosic work. Time flows slowly, on low, subtly fluctuating dynamic levels, the bands of sounds that form streams of varying density are written solely by means of horizontal lines, stretched out across regular bar lines that measure out the time, and the static unfolding of the music is enriched solely with vibrations. The sounds alternately overlap and fade. Sometimes they occur in imitation, and self-contained chords appear incidentally. Arrangements came from many accordion players who are fans of my music. I have always written music for myself mostly jazz arrangements for different groups that I played with through the years but until I took on a few students in recent years I realized there was not much interesting music for them to play. They heard some of my recordings the solo one?s especially and asked me to write arrangements that were not too diffcult but had some of the more modern Harmonies that I use in my playing and a little more sophisticated musically. They especially wanted some of the great standards or ?Evergreens?. I started writing and found that I enjoyed it and received much good feedbackfrom everyone. I hope you enjoy this Book. The idea for this book series is to give instrumentalists the opportunity to practice solo improvisational techniques while playing along to rhythm tracks of keyboards, guitar, bass, drums/percussion in various different Latin styles including Calypso, Mambo, Salsa, Songo, Bossa, Guaracha, Samba and Latin-Blues. The 24 grooves totalling over 200 riffs/phrases and play-a-long tracks consists of a variety of tempos and keys. Each groove has a variety of riffs to learn that are generally 4 or 8 measures in length. It would be beneficial if you could memorize these riffs so that you can experiment using different permutations of the riffs as well as being used as a starting off point for one's own improvisations. Each riff has been recorded with a rhythm track with each style having an extended play-a-long track, around 3 minutes in length, recorded without the solo part so you can practice the riffs that you have learned. Also, these musical phrases or riffs may be interchanged from one groove to another and should be learned in as many keys as possible.

This piece has been written according to exact pitch notation. The pitch indicated on the staff is the exact pitch of the lowest sounding set of reeds.It is conceived for 'concert accordion'. This one is made up of two Keyboards fully chromatic which excludes prepared chords and obsolete system unappropriate - as all musicians are aware of it - to serve subtle polyphony and an extra-tonal harmony.
