French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published his Corsican Song for Alto Saxophone and Piano in 1932. As with his other wind compositions Chant Corse was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become ahigh profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother in to his compositions as is the case with Chant Corse. This Tomasi work is unusual in composition through its exploitation of tonality rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. However this Tomasi piece suitable for advanced saxophonists provides an exciting alternative addition to the repertoire.

Pour Alto Saxophone et Piano-Born to an Italian father and a French mother Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) divided his music studies between the Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Conservatoire de Paris where he was taught by Henri Büsser and Henri Rabaud. His chamber music compositions reveal a marked predilection for wind instruments as reflected in Fantaisie pastorale for oboe and piano (1939) and New-Orléans for bass saxhorn and piano (1944). During his stay a few years earlier at the Villa Medici in Rome (1936) Bozza had written his Aria Pour Saxophone Alto Et Piano – a free adaptation of the third movement of JohannSebastian Bach’s Organ Pastorale in F major BWV 590. This expansive and nostalgic melody which unfolds over a regular meter has become one of the most widely played Saxophone pieces in the world. Having enjoyed such success Éditions Leduc has decided to supplement its republication with an audio version that will enable saxophonists to carry out “full-scale” practice.
