Piano Reduction including solo part. Par DENISOV EDISON. The catalogue of Edison Denisov's works includes 16 concertos. It was a genre to which he returned time and again throughout his life, from the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra of 1972 to the Double Concerto for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra of 1996. In Denisov's music the role of the soloist, or rather the protagonist, is extraordinarily important, not so much for its virtuosity as for its confessional character. The solo part is a monologue distinguished by poetic diction and a very personal message from the composer. The dramaturgical conception of the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, a reworking of the Viola Concerto of 1986, draws on traditional sonata form, thereby reaffirming the ubiquitous classicism in Denisov's thought. In this late work, we find all the typical features of his style: sinuous melodic lines layered into dense contrapuntal textures, and an interplay of orchestral colours, with pure sonorities contrasting with complex mixtures of sounds. It is a perfect dramaturgy that governs the evolution of the music to the very end. The first movement assumes the role of a sonata-allegro, with the standard formal sections of exposition, development, recapitulation and coda. The second movement is an Adagio for strings. The third takes the form of a little contrasting intermezzo that introduces both new thematic material and a new range of colours. Here tunefulness gives way to pointillism enriched with sonic effects. The only movement with a virtuosic solo part, its nervousness and inner tension set it worlds apart from the second and fourth movements that surround it. The fourth movement assumes the traditional form of a final set of variations. It is the dramaturgical and semantic heart of the concerto. The theme of the variations is Franz Schubert's Impromptu in B-flat major, op. 142, which in this case is 'born' from the celesta as the product of a dodecaphonic string cluster. This finale represents Denisov's homage to his great mentor, Schubert's music being for him a symbol of eternal and universal beauty. 'The attentive listener', Denisov stressed, 'will recognise that the Impromptu theme is already suggested very slowly in the course of the three preceding movements, not only thematically, but also psychologically. That's what makes the appearance of the Schubert theme sound so natural.' The variations relate to the variation genre less in their form than in their spiritual and conceptual metamorphoses. Starting with the Piano on a slow section “Andantino Cantabile” (3/4 - tempo 88) the piece then accelerates in the “Allegretto Scherzando” (6/3 – tempo 120) goes back to a slower part and finishes a fast section of notes. A variation of a small section of the main score is also proposed to the player. Difficulties highlighted in the piece are the fast rhythms and the resulting endurance necessary to play them. The piece includes some trills some staccatos and some accidentals that upper-intermediate players should be able to overcome. Denis Joly (1906-1979) is a French organist and composer. Prélude Cadence Et Finale is a piece for Alto Saxophone and Piano written by Alfred Desenclos in 1956 as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece. Dedicated to Marcel Mule the famous French Saxophonist Prélude Cadence et Finale is divided into three parts and presents many compositional techniques characteristic of the Impressionist period. Prélude the first section introduces recurring rhythmic parts and develops themes that will reappear throughout the piece. The second section Cadence corresponds to a dynamic Saxophone cadenza. The Finale is quite dramatic and uses some of the elementsthat previously appeared in the piece. Alfred Desenclos (1912-1961) is a French Composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1942. He also composed masses such as Messe de Requiem and other pieces for Double Bass Harp Flute Trumpet or French Horn.

French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published his Corsican Song for Alto Saxophone and Piano in 1932. As with his other wind compositions  Chant Corse was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become ahigh profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother in to his compositions as is the case with Chant Corse. This Tomasi work is unusual in composition through its exploitation of tonality rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. However this Tomasi piece suitable for advanced saxophonists provides an exciting alternative addition to the repertoire.

Dancers is the second volume of a set of six pieces called Romantic Suite. Composed by Robert Planel for Alto Saxophone and Piano this second piece is for intermediate players. In Dancers the Piano starts on its own but is soon joined by the Saxophone. The piece is divided in five parts the first one being the main theme which is later repeated as the last one. The tempo is quite fast on most of the piece except for the third section. The full set of six volumes features: 1. Italian Serenade 2. Dancers 3. Sad Song 4. Feeling Waltz 5. Christmas story 6. Rated difficult (8°) this piece demonstrates all the required skills to brilliantly pass the contest. < strong>Concert music is divided in four distinct movements each with a different style: I. Pièce Brève is a piece for Saxophone and Piano by Rene Duclos. Written for upper beginners this really nice work is divided in three main parts: Allegretto Allegro Scherzando and Tempo 1: Allegretto with the third part being a variation of the main theme. This piece is really great for demonstrating the skills acquired as a beginner for a transition to the upper level and can also be played in a recital.
