Elena Kats-Chernin wrote Afterwards for the 18th birthday of a young acquaintance, Guy Knopke, who had just started playing the bassoon. The title refers to “the new adventures and changes that can lie ahead after a significant milestone”, according to the composer. She created a solo [also duo] piano version for herself, which is published in the anthology Piano Village (BB 3409). The final version of the original for bassoon and piano, which is no longer quite suitable for beginners, was recorded on CD by Elena Kats-Chernin together with the soloist Lorelei Dowling on Chromart Classics in 2017.

This short work is partly based on the well-known bassoon solo from Peter and the Wolf, the musical fairy tale by Sergei Prokofiev. However, the original melody is presented in â??inversionâ??: ascending intervals become descending ones, and vice versa. The middle cantabile section is mainly situated in the higher bassoon register, thus forming a lovely contrast with the other parts. The piano accompaniment is modest and transparent, so that the bassoon is not drowned out.Dit korte werkje is deels geĂ«nt op de bekende fagotsolo uit Peter en de Wolf, het muzikale sprookje van Sergei Prokofjev. De oorspronkelijke melodie wordt echter in â??omkeringâ?? gepresenteerd: stijgende toonafstanden worden dus dalende en vice versa. Sonata for bassoon and piano is one of Swiders first works for a wind instrument. It was written most probably in the years 1953-1954, under a clear influence of neo-classicist stylistics. The only documented performance took place on 5th May 1955 in Katowice, or Stalinogrod, as such was the name of that city in those days. The first part of Sonata is written in a form of scherzando of a light and witty character, where the composer fully uses the facture and bassoons sound potential. The second part, full of meditation and cantilena, bears a particular expression of lower registers of the instrument. Part three is a traditional minuet in moderato tempo, with stylised folk elements in the middle fragment. The last part resumes the scherzo form, capped by a cadenza written by Marek Baranski, in which attempting to imitate the language of Jozef Swider's compositions that include numerous elements of a synthetic finale he included most music concepts outlined in the entire Sonata.

There comes a time in life when your parents have passed on. What we are left with is the memories of their love, guidance, support, and the happy times together. Last August when my mum sadly passed away, I wrote an Elegy as part of my grieving. However, as a family we had happy times together and it seemed only right to compose a work which would celebrate this. So, I added a first and last movement to create a short concertino.
