An Album of Twenty French Songs arranged for Bassoon and Piano by Martin GattFauréâ??s poignant love song Après un rêve exists in many different transcriptions for various instruments (the most famous version perhaps being the one for cello and piano that Pablo Casals made in 1910), and provides the initial inspiration for this album of French songs transcribed for bassoon and piano. The bassoon is capable of a broad range of timbres and expression, and it is the lyrical, vocal quality of the instrument that Martin Gatt has always been attracted to. In both his performance and teaching, his emphasis is on the importance of what he calls â??vocalisingâ?? through the bassoon, and for him, music for the voice â?? especially art songs of the 19th and 20th centuries â?? has been a rich source of material for exploring the expressive tonal colours of the bassoon.The treasure trove of French art song from composers ranging from Claude Arrieu to Louis Vierne, not to mention the greats like Berlioz or Debussy or Ravel, has made the task of choosing which songs to include in this album a difficult one. In the end, Martin has settled on eight composers who have produced some of the most appealing music in the genre â?? Part of the collection Nine Pieces for bassoon and piano regrouped and transcribed by Fernand Oubradous, Piece is a work initially composed by Gabriel Faure. Quite difficult, it would match the skills and abilities of advanced players. This sensitive piece for bassoon in E flat is quite melodious: the main theme introduced by the piano is repeated by the bassoon who will lead the music from that moment. Written Adagio, molto tranquillo, it is quite slow and nice to listen to. It would be perfect to execute in a recital. Gabriel Faure was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He is one of the most important composers of his generation, with pieces such as Pavane or Requiem.

Alexandre Tansman composed his Sonatine for bassoon and piano in 1952. Consisting of three movements and dedicated to Gustave Dhérin (professor of bassoon at the Paris Conservatory from 1934 to 1957), the Sonatine entered the 20th-century bassoon repertoire from the moment of its composition, gaining recognition at competitions and recitals for bassoonists. Elena Kats-Chernin wrote Afterwards for the 18th birthday of a young acquaintance, Guy Knopke, who had just started playing the bassoon. The title refers to “the new adventures and changes that can lie ahead after a significant milestoneâ€, according to the composer. She created a solo [also duo] piano version for herself, which is published in the anthology Piano Village (BB 3409). The final version of the original for bassoon and piano, which is no longer quite suitable for beginners, was recorded on CD by Elena Kats-Chernin together with the soloist Lorelei Dowling on Chromart Classics in 2017.

This short work is partly based on the well-known bassoon solo from Peter and the Wolf, the musical fairy tale by Sergei Prokofiev. However, the original melody is presented in â??inversionâ??: ascending intervals become descending ones, and vice versa. The middle cantabile section is mainly situated in the higher bassoon register, thus forming a lovely contrast with the other parts. The piano accompaniment is modest and transparent, so that the bassoon is not drowned out.Dit korte werkje is deels geënt op de bekende fagotsolo uit Peter en de Wolf, het muzikale sprookje van Sergei Prokofjev. Unusually for him, Davies starts his Bassoon Concerto not with slow music but with speed and brilliance: the opening is a Presto, initiated by the strings, and only at the entry of the soloist does the tempo relax to that of a real introduction. Out of this grow a big dancing Allegro. The slow movement begins and ends with a simple song, around fantastical ornamentation from the soloist. The finale is again a recitative and dance, with a slow coda. The whole work is an immense show of stamina, poetry and athleticism for the bassoon, set against an orchestra coloured by low wind (alto flute, clarinet in A, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, horns). Bassoon part with piano reduction of the orchestral score.

Belgian composer Theo Van Doren (1898 - 1974) was a Belgian composer, teacher and violinist. He was a teacher at the Music Academy of Borgerhout and was also a soloist in the orchestra of the Royal Flemish Opera in Antwerp. This edition of his Andante and Allegro for bassoon and piano was first published by Metropolis Music Publishers in 1967. The opening Andante is a chance for the soloist to demonstrate the lyrical and expressive qualities of the bassoon. Following this is the Allegro, which is a scherzo in 3/8 time, allowing the the soloist to show the technical capabilities and utilize the whole range of the instrument. The work is dedicated to Leo Van de Velde, teacher at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music in Antwerp.
