Herbert Howells (1892-1983) was an English composer and teacher who is perhaps best known for his choral music in the Anglican tradition most famously his voluminous settings of the evening canticles.Minuet was composed in 1945 for solo Bassoon with Piano accompaniment. It was written for the birthday of Hugh Crosthwaite an English academic and amateur bassoonist who was studying at that time at Cambridge where Howells was working as an acting Organist for the duration of the war. It is subtitled Grace for a Fresh Egg; i.e. a thanksgiving for what was a rarity in wartime Britain.

Bassoon and Piano-Sunset Song op.42 for bassoon and piano was written and premiered in 1994 at the Los Angeles Museum of Art Bing Theatre. It is the composer´s second large work featuring the bassoon as soloist (after Hexen) and like Hexen it isalso dedicated to bassoonist Judith Farmer who premiered it with the composer at the piano.Sunset Song is technically a tour de force for both the bassoon and the piano. It is happy sensuous obsessive and at times mocking - often reflecting the time in which it was written and the events of a Mexico tour that followed the firstperformance during which the piece underwent revisions. The piece starts with an introduction played by the bassoon almost entirely. This introduction uses elements of 1950s pop music. A middle section follows where a static -almost MiddleEastern- ostinato rhythmic pattern beats with increasing tension. This pattern is then transformed to a Latin beat which finally returns the piece to the opening mood. The bassoon ends the piece in an irreverent tone with a pitch written two octavesabove the official limit of the instrumentâ??s register. The title Sunset Song was inspired by Californiaâ??s sunsets and the sun setting on the Pacific Ocean.

The main theme is marked tenuto so full value for each note especially ending notes. Even the quavers aren't very short at this speed. Try to make the richest sound you can like for example a fine Russian baritone.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Fantaisie for Bassoon and Piano is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1945 Bozza's Fantaisie for Bassoon and Piano is a virtuosicwork addressing advanced features including complex rhythms chromaticism a wide range and articulation. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'

Composed by Eugène Bourdeau  Premier Solo (1894) is a fabulous piece for Bassoon and Piano written for the Paris Conservatoire contest. This edition was edited by G. Dhérin a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. Really rich but also challenging this piece is a standard of the Bassoon repertoire and would fit the skills of upper-intermediate players. It lasts for around 5 minutes. Eugène Bourdeau (1850-1925) was a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. He composed other pieces for Bassoon such as the 'Second solo' or the '30 Exercises'.

Internationally acclaimed French composer Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) followed the music traditions of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy yet implemented his own distinctive style. His Sarabande et Cortege for Bassoon and Piano displays influences of Debussy's eschewing of tonality and Ravel's inventive textures. These combined with Dutilleux's unique uses of structure and pedal points create a truly riveting piece for Bassoon and Piano. Grovlez's Sicilienne Et Allegro Giocoso is a sublime addition to the Bassoon repertoire. Much of the composer's works show neo-classical features which is also the case inSicilienne Et Allegro Giocoso where the texture is predominantly melody dominated homophony cadences are frequently heard and modulations to related keys occur despite tonality being interestingly exploited.Grovlez's C minor Sicilienne is unusual in style as it is composed in common time yet the triplets and sextuplets in the Bassoon part provide the 'tarantella feel' required of the musical genre. This is superbly contrasted by the quirky Allegro Giocoso (fast and cheerful) composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance!
