Also known as Patterns For Orchestra (as recorded on the Verve jazz masters 48 CD), this is one of Nelson's very interesting charts. It has a very angular, exciting melody in a brisk swing tempo, and lots of solo space for trombone (as recorded by J.J. Johnson). The solo space could be filled by piano or any other instrument as well. The instrumentation has been converted to 5-4-4-4, a standard big band.

Here is a free swinging, remarkable chart from a new writer for Sierra. Allan Ganley's reputation and legacy in England drew our attention to this marvelous arrangement of One Morning in May. The arrangement is recorded on the CD June Time (Vocalion), and stands among the best versions out there. Starting with a soft, swinging ensemble, the chart moves into space for blowing for tenor saxophone and trumpet, returning to the initial feel with a wonderful, warm ending. All brass ranges are very moderate. This will be a great addition to any jazz band library. 5-4-4-4.

As recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra (and included in the Mosaic CDs The Complete Roulette Recordings of the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra), this is one of those charts that escaped notice for many, many years. Don Sebesky, one of the world's premier arrangers, took a magnificant Rolf Ericson tune and created an arrangement unlike anything you've heard before. The melody is stated by alto saxophone and trumpet, weaving in and out of various textures created by muted brass. The waltz feel begins to accelerate and rise at a climactic point where the melody is once again taken over by a solo trumpet and alto saxophone. Surprisingly, brass ranges are moderate. If you wish to program a piece which will have a very unique flavor and great audience appeal, this would be the chart! 5-4-4-3 (opt. original instrumentation available as 4-4-2-3).

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, 'Ku-Damm' is the 1st movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. Based on the blues, as so much of Oliver's music was, this bright swing (waltz feel) starts with an aggressive line for woodwind doubles and adds to its intensity with the entrance of the trumpets a short while later. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trombone, and piano. This lively, moving composition is sure to bring an exciting contrast to any program! 5-4-4-3 (opt. 5th trombone).

A rare and beautiful chart from the Glenn Miller Orchestra, this chart was originally scored by Bill Finegan and is his iterpretation of Tschaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. The arrangement is full of tonal and dynamic contrast, with a mix of raw brass energy and muted sectional playing, with some lush scoring in all the sections and of course the famous Miller reed sound with plunger brass figures behind the reed section. The piano has a couple of solo spots, but the chart is not a piano feature. The brass ranges are not too demanding, the second alto doubles clarinet, and baritone doubles alto. As with all Miller charts, precision and sectional discipline is required.

Arranged by Bill Holman and originally recorded by the Woody Herman Orchestra, featuring Stan Getz, on their album Live at the Concord Jazz Festival, The Dolphin (El Delfrin) is written in a beautiful Bossa Nova setting and features tenor saxophone throughout. With lush harmonies and flowing ensemble backgrounds, there is ample space for your tenor saxophonist to improvise and explore this wonderful melody and arrangement. If you have a tenor player you want to feature, this chart will stun your audiences! 5-4-4-3.

The eight pieces in the collection are in contrasting styles, including modal blues, Latin grooves, 3/4 minor blues and more! The Conductor's Score includes a CD with full recordings of all the charts and the rhythm section parts are fully notated.
