Dan has created a wonderful Rock Ballad, with a nifty, repeating vamp figure, that can be played by even the most inexperienced players. He has managed to do this without compromising the music. The chart is wonderful! The melody is stated by 2 Altos, Trumpet and Trombone in unison, and it grooves on from there. VERY limited ranges (1st Tpt. written G top of staff) Solos for Alto Sax, Tenor Sax and Trumpet. Solos are written out, or they can be improvised as well. Your band will love it! 5-4-4-4.

Bill Holman wrote some of the best music played by the Stan Kenton Orchestra and Boop Boo Be Doop is surely one of those charts. The melody is scored for four horns within the big band setting, and those four horns (alto, tenor, trumpet, trombone) are also the featured soloists. As recorded on The Concepts Era - Live!, this chart represents Holman's ability to write swinging, exciting music for big band. 5-5-5-3.

This arrangement by Bob Curnow is based on Johnny Richards' original composition written for the Stan Kenton Orchestra, which was part of the Adventures In Time album. This version is easier to play without losing the original character of the piece. Most of the piece is in 9/8 at a moderate tempo. There are solos for tenor saxophone, trumpet and piano, with a wonderful, written-out piano solo in the beginning. Trumpet ranges are quite reasonable.5-5-5-3.

The chart everyone has been waiting for!! Eight minutes of amazing, dynamic, exciting sounds! This arrangement was commissioned and recorded by the SWR Big Band of Stuttgart, Germany. It is, of course, based on the centerpiece of the wildly popular show. Everytime this chart was performed in live concerts in Germany (and elsewhere), the audience just erupted with applause and standing ovations. This isn't an easy chart to play, but it is well worth the effort (similar to The First Circle in that respect). All ranges are fairly reasonable, with the 1st Tpt. part topping out at a written high E. This is recorded on the highly acclaimed CD Towednack, Bob Curnow and the SWR Big Band (available from Sierra Music). 5-4-4-4.

As recorded on Libertango ! Hommage to Astor Piazzolla by the HR Big Band (Germany), this arrangement will surely lift your audiences out of their seats. It features a main soloist of your choice (originally recorded with bandoneon solo) and another solo for tenor saxophone. Various parts are included for different soloists to use. This marvelous arrangement opens with warm sounds in clarinets, muted trombones and flugelhorns behind the beautiful melody stated by the primary soloist. The setting is a medium tango, with a short, exciting swing section near the end of the chart. Once the piece moves into a strong, rock-fusion feel, there is no turning back. You and your band will love this chart. This requires clarinet doubles on the top 3 saxophone parts and bass clarinet on the baritone part. Bill Holman's music never disappoints, and 'Introduction to an Ending' is no exception! Originally written for and recorded on the Charlie Barnet Big Band 1967 album, this straight-ahead blues tune features the saxophone section with a long, wonderful soli that grows for over 70 bars before ripping into the solo section. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, and drums. Filled with energy and excitement, the shout chorus comes roaring in to take the tune out with a bang. This is a great addition to any program! 5-4-4-3.

This is another great Oliver Nelson chart (it swings like crazy!). It starts in 3/4 and then goes to 4/4 and has a wonderful feel and flow as it moves through the different sections. The piece has very limited brass ranges with some optional octave writing in the trumpet 1 part. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, piano and drums. This big band arrangement was adapted by Bob Curnow from the original small band version as recorded on Oliver Nelson Plays Michelle (Impulse). 5-4-4-4.
