Ralph Sauer has beautifully arranged Bach's famous melody Arioso taken from Cantata No. 156 & Clavier Concerto No. 5. Each part of the melody is repeated, the first time with the simple Cantata phrasing and the second time from the ornamented Clavier Concerto. The end result is a beautiful melding of a piece of music from heaven for four part Trombone Ensemble. This work can be performed by moderately advanced musicians.

Capriccio in B-flat, BWV 992 is an early keyboard work, first performed at age 19 when his brother Johann Jacob travelled to become an oboist in the army of Charles XII of Sweden. The 12-minute work for 4-part Trombone ensemble is appropriate for advanced performers. Dr. Marcellus has dedicated his arrangement to the memory of the late Steve Witser, his former student and colleague who was Principal Trombonist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The work is separated into six sections titled:1. Arioso: Adagio - His friends try to persuade him not to undertake the journey2. Andante - His friends tell him of the various misfortunes that may befall him abroad3. Adagiosissimo - The general lament of his friends4. Andante con moto - His friends come, since they see that it must be, and take leave of him5. Posthorn Aria6. Fugue in Imitation of the Posthorn.

A ricercar is an instrumental work that was popular in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Jeremy Kempton's stirring Ricercar for Sonorous Instruments harkens back to the Venetian splendor of the Gabrielis who epitomized the Glory of Venice at its height. This 3 minute work is in A-B-A form beginning with a fanfare-like Allegro that gives way to a contrasting lyrical section which seems to almost melt away. The piece then returns to the opening Allegro and a hall-ringing conclusion. This work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Reflections was composed for the Japanese Trombone Quartet Zipang. The composer was so impressed by the quality of the quartet’s ensemble playing, blend and balance that he wanted to write a piece that would exploit these factors to the full. So the work is almost ‘conversational’, with the four players assuming equal roles and separately moving the musical argument forward. Frank Gazda has beautifully arranged four musical settings of the prayer for Trombone Quartet or four-part Trombone Ensemble by: Jacob Arcadelt (Renaissance), Johann Joseph Fux (Baroque), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Classical) and Giuseppe Verdi (Romantic).Although originally composed as four-part choral settings, they work perfectly for the Trombone. Each piece stands on its own as a work of beauty, or the four can be performed as a whole. They are at a moderately advanced level of difficulty.

Tomas Luis de Victoria was the most famous composer of the 16th century in Spain, and one of the most important composers of the Counter-Reformation, along with Palestrina and Orlando di Lasso. Victoria was not only a composer, but also an accomplished organist and singer. However, he preferred the life of a composer to that of a performer. He is sometimes known as the Spanish Palestrina because he may have been taught by Palestrina.
