Reflections was composed for the Japanese Trombone Quartet Zipang. The composer was so impressed by the quality of the quartet’s ensemble playing, blend and balance that he wanted to write a piece that would exploit these factors to the full. So the work is almost ‘conversational’, with the four players assuming equal roles and separately moving the musical argument forward. These TWO SUITES were composed in response to a request form Heini Schneebeli, the musical director of 'TROMBONANZA 2017'. Santa Fe in Argentina is the backdrop for this exciting annual event involving many hundreds of student and professional players. The FIRST SUITE has three movements and is intended for a trio of younger tenor trombonists working with a teacher on bass trombone who will add richness and depth to the ensemble sound.It is my hope that this piece will encourage, entertain and challenge student players and provide useful concert material for use in the promotion of this unique and versatile instrument. Ralph Sauer has beautifully arranged Bach's famous melody Arioso taken from Cantata No. 156 & Clavier Concerto No. 5. Each part of the melody is repeated, the first time with the simple Cantata phrasing and the second time from the ornamented Clavier Concerto. The end result is a beautiful melding of a piece of music from heaven for four part Trombone Ensemble. This work can be performed by moderately advanced musicians.

Bruckner's Pange Lingua motet, composed in 1868 is a hymn by the thirteenth-century theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas. The setting of the simple hymn is chorale-like, with the same music used for all three verses, and a lovely Amen being added to mark its finish. The text haunted Bruckner since his early years and he wrote a few settings of it during his lifetime. The music with all of its simplicity has some unexpected dissonances. Mr. Sauer's lovely arrangement of about 3 minutes in length is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.
