Two fantastic pieces; J.S. Bach's Jesu Joy Of Man's Desiring and Vivaldi's Allegro from Double Trumpet Concerto. In both of these Baroque Gems it is essential that an appropriate tempo is set immediately and maintained without effort. The arranger suggests metronome values around 84 for the Bach piece and 116 for the Vivaldi.In the Bach always have awareness of where the melody lies and give careful consideration to whether the dotted quaver - semiquaver rhythm is played with a triplet feel or in strict time. In the Vivaldi the solo parts could be played on just about any pitch of Trumpet though it would be best if the twosoloists could use the same pitch of Trumpet whatever that may be. Players that own natural Trumpets and never play them might see this as an ideal opportunity to let them off!The Latin section needs to be played with good rhythm and a sense of fun. The shock notes is Trumpets Horn and Trombone bars 73-74 are best omitted unless absolutely tight.

2 Trompettes Ut-Cor-Trombone-Tuba-Ption Et Pties-Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s-1930s Eugène Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. As a major figure on the classical music frontline Bozza's compositions were well-received by audiences Sonatina for Two Trumpets 1 Cornet 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba being no exception. This Bozza piece for brass is characteristically French with lyrical and graceful melodies contrasted by fast flourishing staccato semiquaver passages. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza'scompositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistenly sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.' Comprising four movements Sonatina for Two Trumpets 1 Cornet 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba is an exciting alternative addition to the brass ensemble repertoire.

Hawk in Winter Light was inspired by the sight of a hawk circling obsessively on a bright November day hence the constantly circular nature of the music and especially its melodic material. Though the central section is quicker the underlying pulse remains the same and the transition to a quicker tempo is hardly noticeable. The piece is therefore and unusually for a brass quintet a single entity in which the outer sections are closely related the final part being partly a reprise and partly a variation of the opening.The piece was commissioned by the KlaraFestival of Flanders and is dedicated to Fine Arts Brass who gave its first performance during thefestival in Belgium on the 20 September 2005.
