Salsa Metalica is written in the popular Cuban and Puerto Rican dance style called salsa. In Spanish, the word salsa refers to hot sauce which also describes this spicy Latin rhythm. The translation for metalico is metallic. The literal English translation of the Spanish word for brass instruments is metal musical instruments. Salsa music often features a big-band styled ensemble with a Latin percussion rhythm section including congas, bongos, and timbales. Capturing the essence of salsa music using two trumpets, a French horn, trombone, and tuba has certainly been an entertaining challenge.

Hydra is a programmatic work based on the ancient Greek myth, Hercules. As a penance for grisly crimes he committed while overcome by a supernatural force, Hercules was given twelve difficult and almost impossible tasks to complete. His second task was to find and kill the Hydra, a water serpent with nine heads. The music begins with a slithering sensation depicting Hercules' quest for the Hydra. Once he found the Hydra, a horrific fight ensued. Hercules began swinging his sword desperately. However, each time he chopped off a head with his sword, two heads grew back in its place. The fight went on for a lengthy period of time. The music progressively becomes more erratic and raucous as the fight intensifies. Victory was finally achieved when Hercules used a burning brand to sear the necks as he cut each head off.

El Huapango Guango was initially inspired by the popular orchestral classic, Huapango by Jose Pablo Moncayo. In south Texas the Spanish word guango (pronounced wongo) is slang for describing something that is loose or wobbly. Although my huapango begins with traditional Mexican rhythms and harmonies, it rapidly takes many twists and turns through a harmonic vortex causing it to stray from the familiar huapango style. El Huapango Guango is my attempt to create a new style of this musical genre for the 21st century.
