Bernard Scherr has arranged six lovely Portuguese Folksongs for Brass Quintet entitled: 1. Mourisca do Santo Joao de Braga (Moorish architechture of Saint John of Braga) as a march 2. A Pastorinha (The Shepherdess) - a lovely andantino 3. O Xi-Xi (Wee-wee) - a silly song 4. O ai, o linda! (Oh, the beauty!) - a lyrical romance 5. Coradinha (The blushing one) - a dance-like jaunt 6. Carro amaricano (American Car) - driving around in the auto These Portuguese folksongs contain many words and phrases that are associated with certain regions of Portugal. These folksongs come from northern Portugal and were collected during the first half of the 20th century. They represent, though, an earlier tradition stretching back into the 19th century and earlier. Some of these titles are terms of endearment (A Pastorinha, O Xi-Xi, and O ai, o linda), of something new and exciting (Carro amaricano), of dance (Coradinha), or of something that is not easily translated (Mourisca-referring either to architecture, a dance, or a local folk deity). These arrangements capture the charming melodies, woven throughout the group, and contain inventive harmonies and imitations. Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in B-flat, Horn, Trombone & Tuba. For advanced performers.

About the Taiwan Fantasia, van Deursen states: After having lived in Taipei for a number of years, I learned many of the local folk and popular songs. Some of the melodies are exceptionally beautiful, and my idea was to somehow combine all the elements that have made up my musical experiences over these years - Chinese melodies, western orchestral music and jazz; I wanted to see if these songs could survive with a totally different harmonic structure and concept. My original goal was to write a simple arrangement of the two songs, but quickly I discovered more melodies building upon the original ones and thus the Variations were born. Composed in 1995, this work of about 10 minutes in length is in one continuous movement, but is divided into seven short sections of contrasting moods including two cadenzas, for Trumpet and Trombone. The music is appropriate for advanced performers. Parts in C and B-flat are supplied for the Trumpets. A recording of Taiwan Fantasia can be purchased on iTunes from the album by the Yeh Shu Han Brass Quintet.

Lauranod Trilogy is a collection of tunes written for various ensembles while I was living in Lausanne Switzerland. The name Lauranod is actually a permutation of the name Lausanne in that it is the word that my cell phone would always try to autospell for me while text messaging. PCO Fanfare was originally written for a mixed low brass ensemble and premiered in the foyer of the conservatory building. Originally conceived as kind of a joke of sorts, the opening fanfare figure contains a mini-quote from the traditional Irish song The Rattlin' Bog. The piece quickly assumed a life of its own and wandered in its own direction. Chorale & Fugue began its life as a simple exercise in writing a four-part fugue. The beginning chorale section was added later. After its first inception as a four-part piece, it was expanded to a brass octet and then reduced to the brass quintet version here. Rue du Midi was originally written for Ensemble STUBA (Swiss Tuba Und Baritone Association) in 2001 and received its premiere in Ermatingen, Switzerland. A raucous piece with lots of energy, it is named after the street next to the conservatory where a few favorite hangouts were located.
