Salute to the Victor is in traditional march form and contains, as a tribute to Victor Grieve who was a devotee of English music (in particular that of Sir Edward Elgar), a short quote from Elgar’s Sea Pictures in the trio. Salute to the Victor was commissioned by Helen, Alex and James Grieve for the Golden Kangaroos (Hornsby Concert Band) from Sydney, Australia, in memory of their parents, Louise and Victor Grieve, Founder and Director.

Salute to the Victor is een werk in traditionele marsvorm. Als eerbetoon aan Victor Grieve, een liefhebber van Engelse muziek (met name die van Sir Edward Elgar), bevat het in het trio een kort citaat uit Sea Pictures van die componist. Edward Elgar (1857-1934) originally composed this work in 1887, as a Pie Jesu, when he was an organist in the St George’s Church in Worcester. Years later, in 1902, he transformed the Pie Jesu into an Ave Verum for soprano and tenor solo, mixed choir and organ. This excellent arrangement was created by Robert van Beringen and skilfully retains the wonderful atmosphere of the original composition.

Oorspronkelijk componeerde Edward Elgar (1857-1934) dit werk in 1887 als een Pie Jesu, toen hij organist was in de St. George’s Church in Worcester. Hij schreef het ter nagedachtenis aan de advocaat William Allen, voor wiehij had gewerkt toen hij vijftien jaar oud was. Het Pie Jesu vormde het eerste deel van opus 2 (de andere twee delen waren het Ave Maria en het Ave Maris Stella). Een aantal jaren later, in 1902, transformeerdehij het Pie Jesu tot een Ave Verum voor sopraan- en tenorsolo, gemengd koor en orgel.Deze uitstekende bewerking is van de hand van Robert van Beringen, die de sfeer van de compositie op vakkundige wijze intact heeftgelaten.

Diese Musik schrieb Edward Elgar im Jahre 1887, während seiner Zeit als Organist in Worcester, unter dem Titel Pie Jesu als Teil seines Opus 2. Erst Jahre später machte er daraus ein Ave Verum für Sopran- und Tenorsolo, gemischten Chor und Orgel. Robert van Beringen schuf daraus diese ausgezeichnete Bearbeitung, in der die Stimmung des Originals sehr gut wiedergegeben wird.

En 1885, Edward Elgar est nommé organiste de l’église Saint-George de Worcester. ce titre, il compose de nombreuses œuvres liturgiques. En 1887, il crée un Pie Jesu, dans le cadre d'un triptyque comprenant aussi un Ave Maria et l’Ave Maria Stella. Il remanie la pièce en 1892, et celle-ci devient alors l’Ave Verum Corpus pour Soprano solo, Ténor solo, Chœur mixte et Orgue (Opus 2, n°1). Robert van Beringen en a réalisé un arrangement délicat et profond.

Everyone will instantly recognise this great patriotic hymn that is often thought of as the second English national anthem. This brass band arrangement by Philip Sparke is sure to be used over and over again at your band’s performances. Bachs Anstellung im Jahr 1723 als Kantor der Thomaskirche in Leipzig brachte die Verpflichtung mit sich, für jeden Sonntagsgottesdienst eine neue Kantate zu schreiben. Der Choral Jesus bleibet meine Freude umfasst beide Teile der Kantate und ist ungewöhnlich kunstvoll ausgearbeitet, mehr wie eine der Arien denn eine Kantate. Philip Sparkes Transkription dieses beliebten Kantatensatzes ist eine wahre Bereicherung Ihres Repertoires.

Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) set William Blake’s Preface to Milton to music for a rally of the ‘Fight for the Right’ movement in the Queen’s Hall, London, in 1916. It became more generally known as ‘Jerusalem’ when Parry conducted it in 1918 at a concert to mark the final stage in the Votes for Women Campaign, after which it was adopted by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (and is still sung at meetings of WI Groups all over Britain). Sir Edward Elgar added his orchestral accompaniment in time for the Leeds Festival of 1922, since then it has become a popular national hymn. The theme is uniquely English and there is an undertone of 19th century politics. Thisarrangement by Philip Sparke is sure to be used over and over again at your band’s performances.
