The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001.

Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had beenkilling the people of his town.
There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to findhis way home, but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon.
The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more leftalone.
The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people.
However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. Inhis desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off.
Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon, a spark ingnites between themand they build a life together and.... live happily ever after!

Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit, however it was her love of composition thatremained her focus.
Self-taught, she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet, The Dutch Brass Ensemble, The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability.
Atpresent she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble.
Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music. Over a period of four decades Jimmy Webb (b. 1946) has written hits for a number of singers including Glen Campbell, Art Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Linda Ronstadt. His songs are often epic in character and include By the Time I Get to Phoenix; Up, Up and Away; Didn’t We; Wichita Lineman and Galveston. MacArthur Park (1968) was unlike anything that had gone before it. Running at over 7 minutes, it is 2 or 3 times the length of most pop songs and has an extended orchestral interlude. Richard Harris’ seminal recording topped the music charts in Europe, while peaking at number two on the U.S. charts. Philip Sparke has made this excellentarrangement for brass band, which is sure to become a regular feature on your concert programme.

MacArthur Park van Jimmy Webb, een nummer dat uitkwam in 1968, was niet te vergelijken met alles wat daarvoor was gemaakt. Met een duur van meer dan zeven minuten is deze song twee of drie keer zo lang als de meeste popsongs,ook het orkestraal tussenspel is bijzonder. Richard Harris’ originele opname stond bovenaan in de hitparades van Europa en op nummer 2 in de Verenigde Staten. Philip Sparke schreef een fantastisch arrangement dat zowel uw muzikantenals uw publiek zal aanspreken.

Mit dem Popsong MacArthur Park gelang dem stets kontroversen, aber äußerst erfolgreichen Sänger und Komponisten ein Riesenhit im Jahr 1968. Das Lied über eine verlorene Liebe ist ungewöhnlich lang für einen Popsong und es enthält ein ausgearbeitetes Orchester-Zwischenspiel. Grund genug für Philip Sparke, diesen besonderen, unvergessenen Hit für Brass Band zu bearbeiten.

When I was approached to compose a work for brassband and church organ I already envisioned the concept I would use. It would indeed literally become a work for brassband and organ. Without the traditional solos, the organ would form an addition to the brassband orchestration as would the brassband provide an extra register for the organ. In short a homogeneous entity. The most important reason for doing this is quite simple. Since this work can only be performed in a church and because of the specific acoustics of the church, the brassband would sound in al its tone colour like an organ. By using certain registers of the organ and combining these with the brassband a wonderfulsound palette can be created. The use of complementary or contrasting tone quality is also possible. The primary theme of this composition is based on these three methods of “colouring”. As far as structure is concerned this work consists of two parts. slow fast. It is built on a number of motifs in which some behave like a consecutive canon. In the fast movement the primary motif develops into a fugue-like section. The canon and fugato are techniques frequently used in classical and contemporary organ literature. The liberal use of structure and motif has lead to the title. “Fantasy for Brassband and Organ”.

Jan Bosveld zegt:Toen mij gevraagd werd een compositie te maken voor brassband en kerkorgel stond mij direct een duidelijk concept voor ogen. Het zou inderdaad een werk gaan worden voor brassband en orgel in de letterlijke zin vanhet woord. Geen traditioneel solowerk maar het orgel als uitbreiding van de brassbandbezetting en de brassband als een extra register van het orgel. Kortom, een homogeen geheel. De belangrijkste reden hiervoor is simpel. Het werkkan eigenlijk alleen in een kerk worden uitgevoerd en een brassband, in een kerk met zijn specifieke akoestiek, klinkt in al zijn kleurschakeringen als een orgel. Door het orgel in een bepaalde registratie te laten klinken kan,in combinatie met de brassband, een prachtige mengklank tot stand worden gebracht. Ook kan worden gekozen voor een klank die aanvullend is of contrasterend. Deze drie manieren van “kleuren” is het belangrijkste thema van de compositie.Wat vorm betreft bestaat het werk uit twee delen. langzaam snel. Het is opgebouwd uit een aantal motieven waarvan sommige zich gedragen als een snel opvolgende canon. In het snelle deel wordt het belangrijkste motief uitgebreidtot een fugato-achtig gedeelte. De canon en het fugato zijn technieken die zowel in de klassieke, als de hedendaagse orgelliteratuur veel worden gebruikt. Het vrij omgaan met de vorm en de motieven heeft geleid tot de titel.Fantasy for Brassband and Organ”.

Who begins? Who follows? In 'Who's next?' the orchestra is divided up into two parts a number of times. The division seems random, but on close scrutiny it becomes clear at the end that sides are clearly taken, also in playing the melody, first one section and then .... who'll be next? 'Who's next?' is solid Rock, no nonsense, going straight ahead.

Wie begint? Wie volgt? In 'Who's next?' is het orkest een aantal keren in tweeën gedeeld. De splitsing lijkt willekeurig, maar als u goed oplet blijkt aan het eind dat er duidelijk partij gekozen wordt. Zo ook in het spelen van demelodie, eerst deze sectie en daarna .... Wie volgt? Who's next is een lekkere Rock, geen poespas, straight ahead.
