In a four-part composition Rieks van der Velde takes us to the richly varied area surrounding the university city of Cambridge.
The Dutch composer was especially inspired by the atmosphere of Cambridgeshire, the county which lies north ofLondon.

1. The Journey.
Although on arrival the area looks peaceful and friendly, the ruggedness of its inhabitants and landscape have an unmistakable influence on the music.
In the course of the tour, which starts with an Allegromovement, we are shown the vitality, energy and freshness of the Cambridgeshire countryside.
Short themes, swift and sudden motifs and rhythmical patterns supported by the drive of percussion instruments give expression to this image.
Thefirst part is concluded by two Calmo movements in which the music expresses how the cathedral in the city of Ely comes into sight and is gradually approached.

2. Visit to Ely Cathedral.
The famous Norman cathedral church of Ely, whichwas built in 1109, has attracted tourists from all over the world apart from being a place of worship and heritage site.
A cornet solo introduces the contemplative mood of the composition at this point.
The mystical atmosphere of thecathedral runs through this lyrical part like a continuous thread.

3. The Pub.
The thirst caused by this intensive journey makes a visit to the local pub a definite must.
These “public houses”, which may be open until the earlyhours of the morning, offer all kinds of entertainment.
Drinks are served liberally and the atmosphere is lively.

4. The Journey Back.
Time has flown: In other words, the moment of departure has come sooner than one would havewished.
In a flashback which recaptures elements of the first part of the composition we say goodbye to Cambridgeshire in a fitting manner.
Two scintillating final measures bring us abruptly back to the present.

In een viertal delen neemt Rieks van der Velde ons mee door de zeer gevarieerde streek rond de universiteitsstad Cambridge.
De Nederlandse componist liet zich inspireren door vooral de sfeer in het graafschap Cambridgeshire ten noorden vanLonden.

1. The Journey.
De aankomst in de streek is vriendelijk te noemen doch de grilligheid van de mensen en het landschap heeft een onmiskenbare invloed op de muziek.
De rondreis welke start op het Allegro laat Cambridgeshire zienals een streek van vitaliteit, energie en frisheid.
Korte themas, flitsende motiefjes en ritmische patroontjes gesteund door stuwend slagwerk bevestigen dit beeld.
Het eerste gedeelte besluit met twee Calmo gedeelten waarbij het zicht op dekathedraal van de stad Ely en het naderen ervan wordt aangegeven.

2. Visit to Ely Cathedral.
In 1109 werd de beroemde kathedraal van Ely gebouwd die tot op de dag van vandaag een grote aantrekkingskracht geniet van niet alleentoeristen.
Het rustpunt van de compositie wordt ingeleid door een cornetsolo.
De mystieke sfeer van de kathedraal is de rode draad in dit lyrische gedeelte.

3. The Pub.
Een intensieve rondreis maakt dorstig en een bezoek aan depub is uiteraard een must.
Tot 11 uur s avonds kan men er terecht voor alle vormen van vertier. De drank vloeit rijkelijk en de sfeer is feestelijk.

4. The Journey Back.
Er is een tijd van komen en gaan, en dat moment komt eerder danje zou willen met andere woorden de tijd is omgevlogen.
Met een flash back naar het eerste deel wordt op passende wijze afscheid genomen van Cambridgeshire.
Twee flitsende slotmaten zetten ons in één klap weer in het hier en nu.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote the lyrics of There is a land of pure delight and is known as the Father of English Hymnody.
Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale.
He wrote about 750 songs, and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World, When I survey the wondrous cross, I sing the Mighty Power of God)

There is a Land of Pure Delight is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription').
Here is used a traditional English melody ('Mendip').

There is a land of pure delight
Wheresaints immortal Reign.
Infinite day excludes the night,
And pleasures banish pain.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) schreef de tekst van ‘There is a land of pure delight’, en staat bekend als de 'Father of English Hymnody' (Vader van het gezang).

Durkle Bandrydge is the name of the composers imaginary world, but it could very well be anyones invisible dream world with a different name. In this very versatile suite by Bruce Fraser, 8 characters are featured, each with its ownpeculiarities, making Durkle Bandrydge such a colourful place. Do these characters differ that much from us? That is for you to find out! In the last part, all characters come together in a special way.

Durkle Bandrydge exists at the end ofyour street. It is invisible to humans, but Durkle Bandrygators can watch us with great interest.
The music will introduce you to some of the characters who live in this unusual place.

The parts:
Somnanbulyss, who is a giant trollguarding the entrance to Durkle Bandryde. At least, he is supposed to, but he tends to sleep most of the time. His music is therefore very slow moving and sleepy.

Long Gwysteen is a tall, mysterious, and somehow sophisticated character,who walls around with a shell on his back. His music glides along rather gracefully.

Squelfitch is a rather unpleasant and smelly character who lives in a bog, which is why his music sounds rather slimy and a bit like trying to walkthrough quicksand.

Perfydlia is a meddling old woman, who gossips about everybody and squeals with sudden delight at the small exciting bits of tittletattle about others in the village. In the music you can hear her sudden little squealsof delight.

Maryann Lovely is a beautiful young lady, graceful, gorgeous, absolutely devine, and her music is obviously just the same.

Thistledoo Nicely is a lively character who spends and spends and spends with her credit card,buying the latest fashion and never worries about having to pay the bills. Her music reflects her excitement when shopping and het ‘happy go lucky’ approach to life.

Marsyn Edginton is the Lord of the manor, the richest man in town, the‘big cheese’, the man with all the power and, of course, the biggest house. He is very grand and his music like he could be a king.

Jimmy McScotsmyn is a red haired scotsman wearing tartan cap. He misses his home country terribly and eatslots of shortbread, oatcakes, scotch eggs, porridge and drinks an enormous amount of Scotch Wisky, which helps him to have fond memories of the kind of music he would like to dance to when he was a younger man. His favourite dance is a Jig andthis is the music he remembers.

Grand March of the Durkle Bandrydgators. We hope that you have enjoyed meeting these characters from Drukle Bandrydge and would invite you to listen to all the villagers now march along in a grand parade -it is a pity that you can not see them, what is a wonderful sight.
If you listen carefully, you will hear the melodies which belong to the characters as they march past.
Oh what a grand spectacle!

Durkle Bandrydge is de schijnwereld van de componist maar eigenlijk de onzichtbare droomwereld in elk van ons en die wereld zou elke naam kunnen dragen.
In de bijzonder kleurrijke suite van Bruce Fraser komen 8 personages (karakters)naar voren ieder met hun eigenaardigheden die van Durkle Bandrydge zo'n kleurrijke wereld maken.
Verschillen die personages nu zo erg van ons? Aan u het oordeel! Het laaste deel brengt alle personages op een wonderbaarlijkewijze samen.
In de score zijn de karakters uitgebreid en nader omschreven.

Performance note: Elk deel heeft een aantal leerinhouden die de moeite waard zijn om uit te lichten. Articulatie, dynamiek, stijlen, zuiverheid,balans, tempo en maatsoorten - het komt allemaal voorbij.

Tip: Maak de personages zichtbaar in een compleet theatergebeuren. Gebruik een spreekstem!

The young have the future. This is the statement made at the beginning of ‘Like a Child’ by Andreas Ludwig Schulte.
The opening radiates strength and ambition, but one is also made to wonder which direction will be chosen, which choices will have to be made.
After the introduction the first steps on the path of life are taken, still somewhat unsteadily (the 3/4th time used illustrates this uncertainty). However, the child has now set off and will meet the future with an open mind, unafraid, even though experience will teach it how easily it can be hurt.
Fortunately, it is sometimes allowed to be vulnerable and it discovers there will always be someone to offer shelter,support and love. (Adagio)
The last part breathes a far greater independence. Youth is able to face the future, it can even take on the whole world!

Wie de jeugd heeft, heeft de toekomst. Met dit statement begint deze compositie van Andreas Ludwig Schulte.
Het begin straalt kracht en ambitie uit. Maar welke kant gaat het op, welke keuzes moeten gemaakt worden?
Na de inleidingworden de eerste schreden op het levenspad gezet, het is nog wat onzeker (de driekwarts maat voelt een beetje wankel). Toch gaan we daarna op pad, onbevangen, met open vizier de toekomst tegemoet al blijken er toch noch kwetsbaremomenten te bestaan.
Gelukkig mogen we dat soms ook zijn en dan is er altijd wel iemand bij wie we geborgenheid, steun en liefde ontvangen. (Adagio)
Het laatste deel straalt al veel meer zelfstandigheid uit. Laat maarkomen die toekomst, we kunnen de wereld aan!

Free World Fantasy was commissioned in Holland for celebrations commemorating the liberation of Groningen, and therefore symbolises the dream of a world without war. It is the first piece of a series in which composer, Jacob de Haan, combines concert band music with a pop style.

Dit werk componeerde Jacob de Haan in 1987 in opdracht van de provincie Groningen. Aanleiding was de Bevrijdingsdag. De muziek symboliseert de droom van een wereld zonder oorlog. Het is het eerste werk uit een reeks waarin Jacob deHaan amusementsmuziek en serieuze muziek vermengd tot een muziekstijl die aan filmmuziek doet denken.

Dieses Werk komponierte Jacob de Haan 1987 im Auftrag der niederländischen Provinz Groningen anlässlich des Befreiungstages. Die Musik symbolisiert den Traum von einer Welt ohne Krieg. Es handelt sich um das erste Werk einer Reihe, in welcher Jacob de Haan Unterhaltungsmusik und ernste Musik zu einer Stilart vermischt, die an Filmmusik erinnert.

Free World Fantasy (“Fantaisie du monde libre”) symbolise le rêve que nous chérissons tous : celui d’un monde sans guerre et sans haine. Dans cette composition, Jacob de Haan combine le style classique une rythmique récurrente issue de la musique pop pour créer un genre proche de la musique de film. Une fresque musicale qui sonne comme un appel la paix.

Jacob de Haan compose questo brano nel 1987 su incarico della provincia olandese di Groningen per celebrare il giorno della liberazione. La musica simboleggia il sogno di un mondo senza guerre. Free World Fantasy è il primo brano di una serie firmata da Jacob de Haan, nella quale il compositore olandese mischia sapientemente musica da intrattenimento a musica più seria, in uno stile che ricorda la musica da film.

In 1966, the British singer-songwriters Des Dyer and Clive Scott founded the pop group Jigsaw. Nine years later they enjoyed their first great success with the catchy song Sky High which rode high in the charts in many countries throughout the world. The Japanese arranger Tomohiro Tabete has composed this exciting version for concert band.

In 1966 richtten de Britse singer-songwriters Des Dyer en Clive Scott de popgroep Jigsaw op. Negen jaren later boekten ze hun eerste grote succes met de fraaie song Sky High, waarmee ze hoog scoorden op internationale hitlijsten.De Japanse arrangeur Tomohiro Tabete schreef van dit nummer een sprankelende versie voor harmonieorkest.

Desmond Dyer und Clive Scott gründeten 1966 in Australien die Popgruppe Jigsaw. Der große Erfolg stellte sich aber erst neun Jahre später ein - dann aber gewaltig: Mit dem Hit Sky High landeten sie weltweit in den Top 20 der Hitparaden. Seither wurde das Lied von verschiedenen Bands und Künstlern neu interpretiert. Tomohiro Tabete sorgte nun dafür, dass auch Brass Bands ihr Repertoire um diesen Pophit erweitern können.

Christmas is full of customs and traditions, both old and new. This is especially evident in Christmas songs, some of which have been part of Christian worship for centuries. A Medieval Christmas combines three ancient melodies that are stillpopular around the world today. Philip Sparke chose Gaudete, a song of praise from the middle ages, Coventry Carol, an English song from the 14th century, and In dulci jubilo, which can also be traced back to the 14th century, toform this joyous suite.

Kerst is een feest van tradities en gebruiken. Dit komt vooral naar voren uit de kerstliederen die al eeuwenlang een centrale plaats innemen binnen de christelijke cultuur. In A Medieval Christmas staan drie oude melodieën centraal diewereldwijd nog steeds populair zijn. Het zijn het middeleeuwse loflied Gaudete, het Engelse Coventry Carol en het bekende In dulci jubilo.

Weihnachten ist auch ein Fest des Brauchtums und der Tradition. Dies zeigt sich ganz besonders in den Weihnachtsliedern, die oft schon seit Jahrhunderten einen zentralen Platz in der christlichen Kultur einnehmen. A Medieval Christmasverwendet drei dieser alten Melodien, die sich heute noch weltweit größter Beliebtheit erfreuen: das mittelalterliche Loblied Gaudete, das englische Coventry Carol aus dem 14. Jahrhundert und das bekannte In dulci jubilo, dasebenfalls auf das 14. Jahrhundert zurückgeht.

Dans de nombreux pays, Noël est un moment privilégié, célébré par de nombreux chants et mélodies dont beaucoup constituent un élément central du culte chrétien. Il Natale é la festa delle tradizioni e ciò si riscontra facilmente nei canti natalizi che da secoli occupano un posto di primo piano nella tradizione cristiana. A Medieval Christmas propone tre antiche melodie, ancora oggi moltoattuali: il canto di lode Gaudete, Coventry Carol e In Dulci Jubilo, entrambe del XIV secolo.
