‘Dutch Christmas Song’ is an arrangement of the old Dutch song ‘Hoe leit dit Kindeke’ (Vlaanderen, 1897).
The tender, almost fragile words have been movingly honoured by Timothy Travis.
The addition of percussion gives this lovely Christmas song a modern touch.

This piece was commissioned by Nordhordland Brass Seminar in 1990 and written for a youth band.

The title referes to a story from norse mythology.
“The Binding of the Wolf” is not a programmatic piece of music, but I felt that there was a kind of coherence between the music and the dramatic story:

“...The wolf Fenrir was one of the demonic offspring of Loki, and as he grew up in Asgard among the gods, he became so huge and fierce that only Tyr was willing to feed him. It was decided that he must be bound, and Odin in his wisdom caused the cunning dwarfs to forge a chain which could not be broken.
It was made from the invisible and yet potent powers ofthe world, such as the roots of a mountain, the noise of a moving cat, the breath of a fish.
When completed, this chain seemed to be no more than a silken cord, but the wolf refused to let it be laid upon him unless one of the gods would put a hand between his jaws as a pledge that it was harmless.
Only Tyr was prepared to do this, and when the wolf found that the chain was unbreakable, the gods rejoiced, but Tyr lost his hand.
The binding of the wolf may be seen as a means of protecting the world of men, as well as that of the gods, from destruction.
The story of the god losing his hand appears to be one of the fundamental myths of nothern Europe...”.

In this composition William Vean takes you on a journey through the fascinating and exciting world of animals. Apart from it being a composition filled with special effects, Animal Kingdom contains many educational elements, such as playing inswing (triplets feeling), chromatics, flutter tonguing, gypsy tuning, varying keys, and, of course, dynamics and articulation. The melodic lines occur in all four voices, as well as in all percussion parts, providing each musician with theopportunity to play a solo or to accompany.

William Vean is an educational composer. He knows how to musically shape the special elements from our daily lives. His music is therefore veryexpressive, containing creative solutions to possible problems. Special ways of playing make his music particularly interesting for the winds, but the percussion section is also featured in his special effects.

The world of the animalsalways plays on ones imagination. In Animal Kingdom, William Vean has portrayed a number of animals in a special manner:

Kevin Kangaroo - The jumping character of this animal can be heard in different voices. The swing style alsoemphasizes the characteristic movements of the kangaroo. Playing in swing style can be practised by using scales.

Eddy Elephant - For some of his smaller fellow fauna friends this can be quite an ordeal, but for Eduard (Eddy for friendsand intimates) it is his daily walk.

Baldrick Bat - Baldrick the Bat is a mysterious character. This can be heard in the fast moving valves and keys, accompanied by special effects in the percussion section.

Curtis Camel - Curtisthe Camel trudges across the desert, feeling bored. The idea that the horizon will never change does not affect him anymore. He has accepted his fate. The distinctive tones from the gypsy scale provide the suitable oriental sounds.

BettyButterfly - Butterfly Betty elegantly, and without worries, flutters from flower to flower in the garden. Her motto: Carpe Diem (Seize the Day). Betty is a one-day butterfly.

Marvin Monkey - A swing monkey stirs up the feelings. Evenmembers of the orchestra will look like real monkeys. How about your audience?

Each part has its own difficulties and challenges.
Important in the first part is playing in swing (triplets feeling). This can be practised usingscales.
In the second part ensemble playing and balance are important.
In Baldrick additional information on the effects that have to be played might be useful. New sounds are, of course, welcome.
Curtis the Camel introduces thegypsy scale. Additional explanation of the use of the scale might be useful. Key changes are interesting in this part. A slight accent on the first beat of the bar will add to the charm of this part.
Marvin the Monkey brings back the swingrhythm that was introduced in the first part, alternated by a straight part with attention to chromatics and articulation.

A story teller will definitely be an asset when performing this composition.

Naast leuke speelmuziek vol ''special effects'', is deze compositie zeer educatief van opzet.
Als interessant inhoudelijke zaken komenonder andere aan de orde - het in swing spelen (triolen feeling), chromatiek, flatterzunge, zigeunertoonsoort, afwisselende maatsoorten en natuurlijk dynamiek en articulatie.
Tevens lopen de melodielijnen zowel door alle 4 destemmen als alle percussie partijen, zodat iedere muzikant de gelegenheid krijgt om te soleren dan wel te begeleiden.

De dierenwereld spreekt muzikaal gezien altijd tot de verbeelding.William Vean heeft op bijzondere wijze een aantal dieren neergezet.
De componist weet op een bijzondere wijze elementen uit het dagelijkse leven muzikaal vorm te geven. Zijn muziek is daarom erg beeldend, de problemen aanwijsbaarmaar de oplossingen zijn creatief.
Voor blazers bijzonder interessant door de bijzondere speelmanieren maar het slagwerk is ook bedeeld met een aantal 'special effects'.

Kevin Kangaroo - Het springerige karakterwordt door verschillende stemmen neergezet. De swingende speelstijl benadrukt de karakteristieke bewegingen van de kangoeroe. Let op de specifieke swingstijl. Heel goed te oefenen met toonladders.

Eddy Elephant - Voor sommigekleinere faunagenoten elke keer weer een beproeving maar voor Eduard (Eddy voor vrienden en intimi) is dit zijn dagelijkse wandelingetje. Giro 224544 t.b.v. de geleden schade.

Baldrick Bat - De vleermuis Baldrick is eenmysterieus type. Dat mysterieuze aspect wordt auditief weergegeven door het snel indrukken van ventielen en kleppen, ondersteund door slagwerkeffecten.

Curtis Camel - De kameel Curtis hobbelt verveeld door de woestijn.

In Theme Park Fun! your orchestra pays a visit to an amusement park. During your visit, you will experience some spectacular rides and attractions this theme park offers. The uniqueness of Theme Park Fun! is the interplay between music and(moving) images. Part 1: The Entrance & Parade [with animation]
The opening of the park is a fact. A day fullof fun and pleasure awaits! You and the other visitors will be confronted with all the rides, attractions and adventures the theme park has to offer. Which ride shall we do first?! There is so much to do and experience on this day in the park! Aparade of colorful floats and park figures is passing by.
Let the fun begin!

Part 2: The Haunted House [with animation]
The only ride in the park that is not related to fun, is the Haunted House. Here visitors will be challengedto visit a house full of ghosts, creepy figures and other ominous things. The clock strikes twelve, there is no turning back. Ghosts are whispering, yelling, screaming... Fortunately it is almost one oclock, so we can leave this creepy placequickly.

Part 3: The Swinging Galleon [with illustrations]
What a huge pirate ship! Each time you swing back and forth, you will feel that weird feeling in your stomach. When you are thrown completely into the top you will have afantastic view over the park, but you can not enjoy it for long. Before you know the ship swings back the other way.

Part 4: The Fairy Tale Ride [with illustrations]
After all those exciting and spectacular rides and attractions,it is time for a peaceful tour in The Fairy Tale Ride. Surrounded by a fairytale setting, you will discover fable figures, talking animals and colorful designs. Such a beauty and tranquility. Having had this experience, we are ready again for thebig rides in the park!

Part 5: The Bumper Cars [with illustrations]
Now its time to crawl behind the wheel of the Bumper Cars! Shall we all chase the conductor?! Before you know you are hit by another visitor or you will bumpagainst someone else. In this tough ride you can prove yourself as a real driver, or perhaps as a really bad one.

Part 6: The Roller Coaster [with illustrations]
The largest, fastest and scariest ride in the park ... we shoulddefinitely do the Roller Coaster! All together in the train, the over-the-shoulder restraints are lowering... be ready to ride. The train leaves the station and is heading for the big lift hill. It will be very scary when the train reaches the topand the train will be plunged down the first drop! Loops, corkscrews and other spectacular coaster elements will follow... Before you know it, the ride of your life is over. Shall we ride it again?!

Part 7: Leaving the Park [withanimation]
Unfortunately everything comes to an end. This day in the theme park is over, but we have a lot new experiences to talk about! The memories of all the funny and spectacular rides will come up when we walk through the park to theexit. Just one look over the shoulder, the amusement park figures are waving at us. Hopefully we will come back again soon!

Deel 1: 'The Entrance & Parade' [met animatiefilm]
De opening vanhet pretpark is een feit. De dag vol plezier kan beginnen en de bezoekers worden hier geconfronteerd met alle attracties en avonturen die ze in het pretpark staan te wachten. In welke attractie zullen we als eerst stappen?! Eris zoveel te doen en te beleven deze dag in het pretpark! Een parade met parkfiguren en kleurrijke praalwagens komt voorbij, de pret kan beginnen!

Deel 2: 'The Haunted House' [met animatiefilm]
De enige attractiein het pretpark die geen 'pret' uitstraalt, is het spookhuis. Hier worden de bezoekers uitgedaagd om zich te begeven in een huis vol spoken, geesten en andere onheilspellende dingen. De klok slaat 12 keer, er is geen weg meer terug.Gefluister..., geschreeuw... Gelukkig slaat de klok bijna 1 uur en kunnen we deze ongure plek snel verlaten.

Deel 3: 'The Swinging Galleon' [met illustraties]
Wat een groot piratenschip! Elke keer wanneer je heenen weer schommelt, voel je dat rare gevoel in je buik. Wanneer je helemaal in de top geslingerd bent heb je een fantastisch uitzicht over het pretpark, maar je kunt er niet lang van genieten. Voor je het weet zwaait het schip weerde andere kant op.

Deel 4: 'The Fairy Tale Ride' [met illustraties]
Na al die spannende en spectaculaire attracties is het tijd voor een rustig ritje in 'The Fairy Tale Ride'. Omgeven door een sprookjesachtige.

From the composer:

High Flyers are regarded as people with promise and potential.They are winners.
This is music for winners.

The title, as well as being a play-on-words, implies the nature of the work. It is a bright, optimistic, and upbeat piece attempting to depict an exhilarating ride on flying carpet.
The opening rising chords immediately suggest the gentle elevation of the carpets' ascent towards unknown heights, leading to a hint of a first theme in the horns at Fig. B.
The first four notes provide the thematic material for the whole work: C F G A.
A perpetual sense of movement is achieved through accented quaver chords punctuating the melodicmaterial of the first main theme.
Fig. E sees the music of the opening bars fully realised, with flourishes from the euphonium and baritones representing swirling clouds, shooting stars, or passing birds in flight.
The same subject is developed into a lyrical second theme with a new lush harmonic treatment, evocative of gliding over an expanse of sparse countryside.This section ends with a note of serenity but is shattered by the urgent insistence of the percussion rhythms.
The third section introduces a new idea with a slightly distorted fanfare in the cornets and trombones.
This figure suggests for the first time that there may be trouble ahead. In fact, there is no need to fear and the journey can continue without aggravation. This fanfare returns near the end to signal a final note of triumph.
A new rhythmic variant of the cell motif emerges as the third theme now transformed by the addition of a triplet figure.
The music steadily gains momentum before moving inexorably towards the climactic return of the music and tonality of the opening bars of the piece.

Durkle Bandrydge is the name of the composers imaginary world, but it could very well be anyones invisible dream world with a different name. In this very versatile suite by Bruce Fraser, 8 characters are featured, each with its ownpeculiarities, making Durkle Bandrydge such a colourful place. Do these characters differ that much from us? That is for you to find out! In the last part, all characters come together in a special way.

Durkle Bandrydge exists at the end ofyour street. It is invisible to humans, but Durkle Bandrygators can watch us with great interest.
The music will introduce you to some of the characters who live in this unusual place.

The parts:
Somnanbulyss, who is a giant trollguarding the entrance to Durkle Bandryde. At least, he is supposed to, but he tends to sleep most of the time. His music is therefore very slow moving and sleepy.

Long Gwysteen is a tall, mysterious, and somehow sophisticated character,who walls around with a shell on his back. His music glides along rather gracefully.

Squelfitch is a rather unpleasant and smelly character who lives in a bog, which is why his music sounds rather slimy and a bit like trying to walkthrough quicksand.

Perfydlia is a meddling old woman, who gossips about everybody and squeals with sudden delight at the small exciting bits of tittletattle about others in the village. In the music you can hear her sudden little squealsof delight.

Maryann Lovely is a beautiful young lady, graceful, gorgeous, absolutely devine, and her music is obviously just the same.

Thistledoo Nicely is a lively character who spends and spends and spends with her credit card,buying the latest fashion and never worries about having to pay the bills. Her music reflects her excitement when shopping and het ‘happy go lucky’ approach to life.

Marsyn Edginton is the Lord of the manor, the richest man in town, the‘big cheese’, the man with all the power and, of course, the biggest house. He is very grand and his music like he could be a king.

Jimmy McScotsmyn is a red haired scotsman wearing tartan cap. He misses his home country terribly and eatslots of shortbread, oatcakes, scotch eggs, porridge and drinks an enormous amount of Scotch Wisky, which helps him to have fond memories of the kind of music he would like to dance to when he was a younger man. His favourite dance is a Jig andthis is the music he remembers.

Grand March of the Durkle Bandrydgators. We hope that you have enjoyed meeting these characters from Drukle Bandrydge and would invite you to listen to all the villagers now march along in a grand parade -it is a pity that you can not see them, what is a wonderful sight.
If you listen carefully, you will hear the melodies which belong to the characters as they march past.
Oh what a grand spectacle!

Durkle Bandrydge is de schijnwereld van de componist maar eigenlijk de onzichtbare droomwereld in elk van ons en die wereld zou elke naam kunnen dragen.
In de bijzonder kleurrijke suite van Bruce Fraser komen 8 personages (karakters)naar voren ieder met hun eigenaardigheden die van Durkle Bandrydge zo'n kleurrijke wereld maken.
Verschillen die personages nu zo erg van ons? Aan u het oordeel! Het laaste deel brengt alle personages op een wonderbaarlijkewijze samen.
In de score zijn de karakters uitgebreid en nader omschreven.

Performance note: Elk deel heeft een aantal leerinhouden die de moeite waard zijn om uit te lichten. Articulatie, dynamiek, stijlen, zuiverheid,balans, tempo en maatsoorten - het komt allemaal voorbij.

Tip: Maak de personages zichtbaar in een compleet theatergebeuren. Gebruik een spreekstem!

In English-speaking countries ‘Away in a Manger’ is one of the first Christmas songs to be taught to little children. It is a moving song with simple words, which makes it easy to understand.

The song is also known as ‘Luther’s Cradle Hymn’. This suggests that Martin Luther was the author of the lyrics. According to researchers, however, this is a misconception the author is unknown.
In England ‘Away in a Manger’ is sung to a different melody than in the USA, for example. The ‘English’ melody was composed by W.J. Kirkpatrick.
Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the ‘English’ melody, which suits the tender lyrics perfectly.

In Engelstalige landen is ‘Away in a Manger’ een van de eerste kerstliedjes dat de kinderen geleerd wordt. Het is een gevoelig lied met een eenvoudige en daarom aansprekende tekst.
