Volker David Kirchner's works encompass every genre; in addition to numerous compositions for musical theatre and for orchestra, this viola player who formerly played in orchestras and chamber ensembles still shows a preference for composing chamber music. Yet even in this field of 'pure, absolute' music, Kirchner's work has a theatrical quality which shows itself very clearly in his choice of titles (e.g. Mysterion, Il canto della notte, Lamento d'Orfeo, Exil). In this Quintet Kirchner manages to use the various possible combinations of the different instruments to create highly expressive music.

Note by the composer: “This piece was written in 2006 (for violoncello and piano) for an exhibition dedicated to artists suffering from schizophrenia. The basis of the piece is a sequence of four chords, very simple and minimalistic. A person with schizophrenia hears voices that can be very disturbing; there is a longing for silence. I wrote this piece so that my son Alex, who suffers from the illness, could hear silence and meditation from it. It's called Blue Silence because blue is sometimes associated with healing.†Elena Kats-Chernin.

The publishers Henle and Breitkopf & Hartel are continuing their collaboration, now with Brahms, by publishing the performance material of the double concerto. Brahms's last work with orchestra was published in the new Brahms Complete Edition in 2002, whereby the editor was able to base himself on newly accessible sources. Of particular interest are the additional performance instructions for the solo violin and solo cello, which were gathered from the first edition of the solo parts. These indications were supplied by the soloists of the first performance, Joseph Joachim and Robert Hausmann. No doubt authorized by Brahms, they communicate valuable insights into the performance practice of the time. The new material also contains a part in which the solo violin and cello are notated one above the other. The trio edition for violin, violoncello and piano (EB 6040), which was made by Brahms himself, has proven itself for chamber performances; it continues to be available. The full score is a conductor's dream: big, bold, and beautifully laid out on glare-free bluff paper. Robert Schumann's Violoncello Concerto op. 129 can be regarded as the first great concerto for this instrument's repertoire. It is thus somewhat surprising that this work had an extremely problematic reception history at the outset.Schumann wrote the score in 1850, during his Dusseldorf years, but there was neither a concrete occasion nor a soloist for a world premiere. After its publication, more years elapsed before the world premiere. It was only towards the end of the 19th century that Schumann's Cello Concerto finally made its breakthrough as a repertoire piece. The Urtext edition is based on the original print of the parts and the piano reduction, which had still been supervised by Schumann. In addition, the autograph of the score was consulted for purposes of comparison. The internationally renowned soloist Heinrich Schiff took part in the preparation of the edition for violoncello and piano. His experiences have been incorporated into his arrangement of the solo part. With his comments, Schiff also provides valuable tips on the interpretation of the work.A key work of the romantic concerto repertoireThe piano reduction by Robert Schumann contains the unsigned solo part as well as the solo part arranged and annotated by Heinrich Schiff.

The three grands motets, Quam dilecta, In convertendo and Deus noster refugium, which Jean-Philippe Rameau composed from 1713 to 1715 are still relatively unknown today. Yet these masterworks can stand comparison to the best works of Michel-Richard de Lalande. They are testimony to Rameau's great contrapuntal mastery and contain beautiful lyrical passages. Quam dilecta and Deus noster refugium have survived only in later sources which originated in about 1770, after Rameau's death, and the works have been rendered in a scoring which does not correspond to his intentions. The present new edition attempts for the first time to reconstruct them as closely as possible to their original form. The edition of In convertendo is based on Rameau's autograph score from 1751.

Commissioned in 1998, this chamber piece is truly unique experience! A short piece (18 minutes), the work is derived from the composer’s fascination with a theory from quantum physics stating that time is fluid and that matter can exist concurrently in one place. To encompass this idea, the composer asks that a passage of music that he wrote when he was 15 be pre-recorded and played during the second movement (Desolato). The music of the adult David Carlson is coupled with music written thirty years ago, creating a sonic continuum. The highly charged, rhythmically aggressive music of the first movement is contrasted by the nostalgic slow mood of the second movement. The final movement is both energetic and passionate, which brings this imaginative work to a positive conclusion.

Hailstork had originally written his Elegy in 1980, in memory of a friend's passing. Decades later, he was asked by cellist Tim Holly to finish the work, and the Caprice was added in 2016. Despite 35 years of intervening life and changes in musical language, Hailstork has matched the tonality of the earlier movement. His transcription for viola and piano was performed in October at New Music Norfolk (Hampton Roads) by Rebecca Sinclair Kim and Susan Ha.
