A celebration of the development of the Cello which over the period of the 18th century progressed from its status as a continuo instrument and allowed it to fulfil a much more soloistic role. The first solo sonatas hass appeared in the late 17th century but it was some hundered years later that a virtuoso repertoire gradually emerged inspired by the artists featured in this collection.

Le premier mouvement n'utilise qu'un seul thème et le développe en variations rythmiques, harmoniques et mélodiques qui agissent simultanément comme un« thème A» et un« thème B ». Ce thème apparaît dans les autres mouvements, soit comme thème secondaire, soit une nouvelle fois sous forme de variations ou de développements. Il en résulte une œuvre de grande virtuosité technique, pleine d'énergie et d'expressivité. Each Cello part is supported by a Piano accompaniment for student performances. Alternately a second Cello part allows duo playing with the teacher during lessons. This early introduction to chamber music brings joy and satisfaction to the young cellist and teaches the student to hear the music as a whole. Brahms completed his Cello Sonata Op.99 during the productive summer of 1886. The first public performance took place in Vienna on 24 November of the same year. Robert Hausmann played the Cello part and the composer himself was his partner at the Piano. Even though the work was generally received positively it took some years until it was fully appreciated and gained its irrevocable place in the Cello repertoire.Of particular value to the editors were the two early performance editions of the Cello Sonata Op.99 by Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg as well as by Julius Klengel. Both cellists Becker and Klengel had aconnection to Brahms who very much admired and trusted Becker's playing and who performed together with Klengel. This edition not only incorporates Becker's and Klengel's performance markings but also Hausmann's for whom the piece was written. Felice Maria Picinetti is one of those composers who did not make a lasting mark on the history of music. He is believed to have been active as a cellist in Dresden around 1733. His cello sonata hints at a lively temperament and a solid training in the Baroque sonata da chiesa style. Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) probably was the greatest cello virtuoso of his time and compared to Paganini in his lifetime. Aside from the Piano Quartet op. 13 and the Violin Sonata op. 18, the Cello Sonata op. 6 numbers among the most mature works of chamber music from Strauss? early ?uvre. The influences of Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms are noticeable, while leaving sufficient space for a very personal tonal language, often with surprising rhythmic and harmonic turns of phrase. Strauss subjected the first version completed in early 1881 to a radical revision over the winter of 1882/83; the opening movement was thoroughly reworked, the two subsequent movements rewritten completely.
