Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) was a Swiss-born Jewish composer. Schelomo: Rhapsodie Hébra que was the last and best known works of his Jewish Cycle in which he attempted to find some sort of musical identity - the Jewish state having not yet come into existence when he was writing. The solo Cello is intended to represent the voice of King Solomon while the orchestral accompaniment is often seen to express Solomon?s hidden thoughts. This edition has had the accompaniment transcribed for the Piano and includes a separate score for the Cello part.

Par WINTERBERG HANS. Hans Winterberg, born in Prague in 1901, lived through almost the entire period of the 20th century and was influenced as a composer by its most important artistic innovations. Already a brilliant pianist as an adolescent, he studied with Alois Hába and Alexander von Zemlinsky in Prague. Both his life and his music reflect the Austrian-Czech-Jewish cultural symbiosis; he saw himself as a bridge builder between Western and Eastern, i.e. Slavic, cultures. Owing to his Jewish ancestry, he was deported to the Terezin concentration camp after the annexation of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany. He was the only Jewish representative of the Czech musical avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s to survive the Shoah and, in 1947, followed his non-Jewish wife and their daughter to the FRG in the course of the expulsion of the German-speaking population from Czechoslovakia. Winterberg's fascinating oeuvre, which was kept under lock and key in a German music archive for years after his death, is now being made accessible in first editions due to a cooperation between the Exilarte Center for Banned Music at the University of Music in Vienna and Boosey & Hawkes. The first printed edition is Winterberg's Cello Sonata, composed in 1951, in which all the characteristics of his unmistakable personal style come to the fore: dance-like energy, polyrhythm, intimate yet unsentimental melos, subtle handling of folkloristic material, and an unerring sense of form and balance. Par MANTOVANI BRUNO. C'est à la suite d'une visite au musée Paul Klee de Bern lors d'une tournée de l'ensemble intercontemporain dirigé par Pierre Boulez que j'ai décidé de composer ce duo. Inspirés par de nombreuses oeuvres du peintre-musicien allemand, ces cinq moments enchaînés sont autant d'études sur la notion de ligne, particulièrement importante pour Klee. Ainsi, la première section, la plus rhapsodique et hétérogène, est-elle une apologie d'une ligne sans cesse brisée, formée de directions claires et juxtaposées. Le violoncelle se montre lyrique, mais aussi rythmique (lors de courtes cellules en homorythmie avec le piano). C'est l'alternance entre ces deux états qui structure le discours. En opposition avec ce début, la deuxième pièce est, elle, particulièrement homogène. Le violoncelle assure un bourdon quasiment imperceptible, écrin pour le déploiement d'une ligne très volubile au piano. C'est donc la souplesse qui caractérise cette section, au cours de laquelle les deux instruments entreront progressivement en fusion timbrique. Ce flux virtuose conduit alors à une section où les deux instruments ne font encore qu'un, fondée sur des accélérations et des ralentissements écrits dans une pulsation fixe. Une ligne sinusoïdale qui hésite entre pointillisme et continuité, interrompue par un mouvement plus mystérieux, où un trémolo est échangé entre les deux instruments. Enfin, c'est une ligne circulaire qui conclut l'oeuvre, dans un tourbillon pianistique où le violoncelle agit comme résonateur puis comme partenaire-relayeur. D?allure tout à fait classique, les Variations en forme de chaconne furent interprétées en première audition le 23 février 1902 par Gaston Courras, violoncelliste de l?opéra de Paris, et l?auteur au piano. Cette pièce s?inscrit dans le mouvement de redécouverte des maîtres clavecinistes du Grand Siècle qui s?opère au tournant des xixe et xxe siècle. On sait par ailleurs l?intérêt que portait La Tombelle à des compositeurs comme Couperin ou Rameau, les exécutant lui-même souvent en concert. D?autres ?uvres de ce compositeur font également référence de manière explicite à une certaine forme de classicisme hérité du passé. Pensons par exemple à la Passacaille ou à l?Air varié dans le style ancien pour violon et piano, à la Toccata dans le style ancien de la Suite d?orgue pour le temps de Noël ou encore à la Suite pour 3 violoncelles. Pièce brillante de concert, ces Variations en forme de chaconne allient l?apparente simplicité du matériel de base employé à une grande virtuosité mettant en avant l?interprète.

'Energique et ludique' est écrit au-dessus de la première note. Ca avance, sans mémoire ou presque, chaque instant prenant sa source dans le précédent. Ca file comme une journée bien remplie. Il y a quelques brèches dans ce temps sans temps. Juste pour respirer un peu. A la fin c'est comme après une petite course, des traînées de temps qui court nous rattrapent. Violoncelle et piano construisent ici un même discours, il n'y a pas de préférence. Seuls les termes sont différents. Cela me vient peut-être de l'improvisation, où souvent - quand nous jouons en petit nombre - nous construisons ensemble un discours qui va dans le même sens mais avec des matériaux hétérogènes, car nous ne nous sommes pas concertés. / Violoncelle Et Piano

Born into a family of bankers that had lived in Florence since the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) studied under Pizzetti at the city’s Conservatoire. He soon became one of the leading members of the young Italian school which broke with the tyranny of bel canto to return to the instrumental tradition of the Italian masters from the Baroque era. In 1928 Amédée-Landély Hettich a vocal teacher in Paris asked Castelnuovo-Tedesco to write a vocalise for the Répertoire moderne de Vocalises-Études the publication of which he was supervising at Leduc. Castelnuovo-Tedesco’scontribution entitled Vocalise-Étude for Medium Voice became so popular that it was immediately transcribed several times over. The present adaptation for cello and piano was created with prior consent from the composer by the famous Catalan cellist Gaspar Cassadó in 1930. The works opens with a poignant lamento that grieves the tragic fate of the Jewish people; it is followed by a folk dance whose “brisk and stubborn” movement marks with panache an imperious refusal to yield to resignation. The composer adopted the same proactive stance himself when in 1939 fleeing Mussolini’s antisemitic laws he decided to emigrate to the United States a land of refuge to which he would remain faithful until his death some thirty years later.

Par SCHNEIDER FRIEDRICH. Friedrich Schneider is known today above all for his extensive oeuvre in the area of the oratorio. No less important, however, in addition to his symphonic work, is his group of works for piano and/or chamber music. His cello sonata in F major, with all four movements large in scale, was probably composed in 1831 for the daughter of the Cologne music patron, Dr. Erich Heinrich Verkenius. With its expressiveness, monumental structure, and post-Beethovenian sensuality, this sonata already seriously anticipates Romanticism. Our edition offers two solo parts: an unmarked original text as well as a version with fingerings and bowings by the Leipzig based cellist Jürnjakob Timm./ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano
