Une bonne intention n’est jamais assez bonne (d’après Kurt Tucholsky): l’Arpeggione, cette sorte d’hybride – une grande guitare frottée par un archet – n’a jamais réussi à s’imposer auprès des musiciens. Cette curiosité organologique serait certainement déjà tombée depuis longtemps dans l’oubli le plus total si précisément Franz Schubert n’avait pas composé sa sonate en La mineur pour cet instrument. Et cette oeuvre en trois mouvements est vraiment immortelle. Mais elle pose aussi un problème pour l’Urtext, car sans certaines interventions dans le texte, la partie d’arpeggione originale ne pourrait être exécutée sur l’instrument le plus proche au niveau du timbre, àsavoir l’alto ou le violoncelle. La maison d’édition G. Henle résout ainsi le dilemme: d’une part, la partie d’arpeggione originale est superposée à la partie de piano originale (partition), de l’autre, dans la partie séparée jointe à la partition les rares changements d’octaves indispensables sont clairement indiqués. Il était hors de question pour nous d’envisager une autre partie – le violon par exemple (comme dans l’édition Diabelli parue après la mort du compositeur), la flûte ou tout autre instrument mélodique à tessiture aiguë – car toutes ces alternatives s’écartent trop des représentations de timbre que pouvait avoir Schubert. Et pourtant, le jeune colonais a longtemps eu un certain succès comme instrumentiste dans les salons parisiens, grâce à des oeuvres de collègues, des arrangements et surtout ses propres compositions. Parmi certains trésors jusqu'ici inconnus que recèle l'oeuvre d'Offenbach, on trouve cet hommage au grand Gioacchino Rossini, à qui Offenbach doit beaucoup pour ses opéras bouffe, et qui a eu de nombreuses affinités avec Offenbach : le surnom affectueux donné à Offenbach de ' petit Mozart des Champs-Elysées ' revient au maitre de Pesaro. Arrangement for Violoncello and Piano by Carl Hüllweck The gourmet's delight In 1876, ten years before César Franck's violin sonata in the same key, Gabriel Fauré made a major contribution to the first flowering of French chamber music with his A-major Sonata op. 13. He even found a publisher for it right away, namely Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig. Both the work and the composer were warmly acclaimed immediately after the publication: This sonata contains everything that appeals to the gourmet: new forms, wonderful modulations, unusual tone colors, unexpected rhythms. With this work of such modest appearance, Mr. Fauré has leapt to the top ranks of the masters in one bound. Thus wrote Camille Saint-Saëns with pride about his pupil's work. The publisher seems to have picked out a true gem from Fauré's œuvre, for the sonata soon became very popular, and in 1889, Breitkopf & Härtel heightened this popularity by releasing an arrangement for violoncello by Carl Hüllweck. It is likely that Fauré not only approved the arrangement, but also proofread it. Long out of print, this edition will once again allow cellists to enjoy Fauré's violin sonata in a competent period arrangement.
