Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was an Austrian composer working in the early Romantic era. His Serenade was written in 1826 supposedly after a long summer's walk with some friends. It was originally asetting of a poem by Ludwig Rellstab for a solo Alto Voice.Serenade was never published during the composer's lifetime only coming to light in a posthumous collection called the SwanSong. It has since been recognised as one of Schubert's most beautiful and graceful compositions. It has been transcribed here for Cello and Piano by the Italian cellist Alfredo Piatti as one of hisThree Melodies.

Par POULENC FRANCIS / GENDRON. Born in Paris in 1899, Francis Poulenc soon became a notable composer and pianist. His Serenade, originally composed in 1925-1926 for Voice and Piano, met much success as part of his Bawdy Songs. Therefore, it was well-received when Maurice Gendron transcribed it for Cello and Piano. Poulenc, as a member of Les Six, composed music in a style contrary to that of Richard Wagner and impressionists Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Serenade reflects the composer's contrasting style, making use of a 6/8 time signature, double stops, variations in articulation and wide range on the Cello. Charles-Joseph Lebouc organised the première of this work and also played the cello part. With the composer's permission he then adapted this sonorous romance accompanied by two pianos in the original for Violoncello and onePiano.Henle are presenting the first ever Urtext edition of this popular cello work. The second Piano part is reproduced in small print thus permitting a comparison of the two versions. Two Cello parts are provided onewith markings and one without.

Busoni was just sixteen years old when he wrote the extraordinary Serenata, and the quality of the music is exceptional. The work draws inspiration from the serenade as love song, and the interplay between the warm, lyrical cello line countered by its bright and lively piano partner is highly effective. In preparing this new addition, cellist Lowrii Blake has consulted the original manuscript of this undeservedly neglected work.

His ever-popular Ave Maria was composed in 1825 as No.6 of his Op. 52 a setting of seven songs from Sir WalterScott?s epic poem The Lady Of The Lake. The text came from a part of the poem called Ellen?s Song.The melody has been re-used many times and is often set to the Catholic Prayer that starts with the samephrase (?Hail Mary? in English). Most memorably it was adapted by Walt Disney for his 1940 film Fantasia. It has been transcribed here for Cello and Piano by the Italian cellist Alfredo Piatti as one of his ThreeMelodies.
