Arioso for cello and piano by Ferenc Farkas (1905-2000) is one of the composer s earliest-known compositions. He wrote the piece in 1926 during his student years, although it was originally intended to be the slow movement of a viola sonata which was never published. Only later did Farkas rework it as a stand-alone work for cello. The composition, like Kodály's Adagio which was published 20 years prior and also written for cello, focuses on the singing melody of the string instrument while simultaneously showing Farkas creative preference for Mediterranean colors and Latin proportion.

For Bob is arranged for Cello and Piano. First performed by Elisabeth Smalt and Kevin Volans, London 2016. Composers Note: I have no idea where this piece came from and how it is structured. But before and after I wrote it I was nagged by the question: what does the viola have to do with the piano? Did this combination evolve by unfortunate accident? The viola was perfected in the 18th century. Its natural metier is (private) chamber music. The piano on the other hand kept growing and blossomed in the 19th century as the ultimate public instrument. If the piano is to play with the viola, it has to rein back its power and pose as an accompanist. Maybe a third instrument, perhaps from the 20th century, is needed to mediate between these two very different sound worlds. So whenwe play this 'trio' with 2 instruments I invite the listener to mentally add the silent part(ner). - Kevin Volans.

Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) composed Adagio for violin and piano in 1905 and dedicated it to the outstanding violinist Imre Waldbauer. In 1910 Kodály made versions of the work for both viola and cello, while Norbert Duka transcribed it for double bass. In 1983, my friend and colleague Arnt Martin made me read and listen to a most interesting piece of music for soprano, viola d'amore and strings, this work called my attention to the viola d'amore. In the following year, I became more and more absorbed in the possibilities this instrument offers and in 1985 decided to write a morceau d'ensemble including a viola d'amore. Thus birth was given to Mysterion, a composition for which these five musicians seem tailormade. As to content, Mysterion represents a reflection on death. As a lesson and lecture piece, Bertold Hummel's Sonatine op. 35, created in 1969, accompanied many young musicians on their way. Sold a thousand times all over the world, it is one of the composer's best-known works and has been included in the repertoire list for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition by the German Music Council. Warmth and sparkling rhythm characterize the three movements: inthe powerful maestoso, the sonority of the main theme is contrasted with a lyrical side theme; the recapitulation ends with an impulsive fugato. The second movement Elegie consists of a single soulful melody about spherical harmonies of the piano. As the highlight in the Finale vivace, playful lightness, marching rhythms and dramatic increases replace each other in quick succession; wild arpeggios lead to the end. Originally composed for violin, versions for viola and cello were already familiar. For the 50th birthday, Simrock / Boosey & Hawkespresents the work in a revised, revised edition. A repertoire enrichment for beginning instrumentalists are the first available versions for alto and tenor saxophone, which the composer made himself in the 1990s.
