'El-Metfarnageen' is the first piece by the young Egyptian composer and percussionist Mohamed Saad Basha published by Schott Music.In the Egyptian colloquial language, 'El-Metfarnageen' refers to a person who, strongly influenced by the Western way of living, has almost forgotten his/her true origin. As a consequence, the piece's musical motifs critically examine the influence of Western culture in North Africa while at the same time emphasizing the origins of Egypt's own musical culture shaped over millennia.'El-Metfarnageen' was commissioned by the world-famous Bibliotheca Alexandrina and performed for the first time in its historic rooms.

In a magazine with reports on mental institutions, Thomas Larcher came across interviews with patients: 'These sentences are of a strong inner power, yet do not claim to convey an overall picture of these people. There rather appear snatches from their world like a stroboscope.' The soprano part in Larcher's composition attends to these texts in a very restraint, often introverted manner, but they continue to have an effect in the instrumental parts, like catalysts of seemingly disturbing processes. The world premiere with Juliane Banse, Christian Tetzlaff, Nikolaj Schneider and the composer on the piano took place at the renowned festival 'Spannungen' in the power station of Heimbach in 2002. Recently, a recording has been released by ECM New Series.

If a chanson is combined with a birthday celebration (in this case, that of the Ensemble Utopik who commissioned this new work), this inevitably brings back scenes of childhood. For me, Adieu Madras conjures up memories of the homeland of my family, and in particular Henri and Jacqueline Salvador whose wonderful TV programmes I watched during the 1970s. It is without doubt thanks to Henri Salvadors wonderful interpretation that this old chanson from Martinique, dating from the late eighteenth century and almost a national anthem both in Martinique and Guadeloupe, has also gained such popularity in France. In this trio, as in most of his compositions, Jost has pictures and associations with true incidents, films and novels in his mind. What inspired him to write this piece was Joseph Conrad's novel 'Heart of Darkness' in which the protagonist Marlow says about the city of Brussels: 'In a few hours I arrived in a city that always make me think of a whited sepulchre.'In 'Sepulchral City', a work commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, however, the title refers to Jerusalem, the city of white tombs. The topic of Jost's trio is a travel into the soul and living spirit of a city, with no physical movement being needed to find the heart of impenetrable darkness: It lies within the city walls.In this respect, 'Sepulchral City' equals a compositionally unfolded funeral bell. Even the animated middle section rather has insisting than progressive power. At the end, the only thing to do is to inhale and exhale.

The title of the piece refers to the Agama, a fundamental holy scripture of early Buddhism. The young composer says about it: 'The basic ideas of these writings were a source of my inspiration. The compositional material corresponds to my own musical language and is strongly linked to the spirit and concept of these Buddhist writings.'The result is a very lively and spirited interplay of the musical passages among the different instruments. The publishers Henle and Breitkopf & Hartel are continuing their collaboration, now with Brahms, by publishing the performance material of the double concerto. Brahms's last work with orchestra was published in the new Brahms Complete Edition in 2002, whereby the editor was able to base himself on newly accessible sources. Of particular interest are the additional performance instructions for the solo violin and solo cello, which were gathered from the first edition of the solo parts. These indications were supplied by the soloists of the first performance, Joseph Joachim and Robert Hausmann. No doubt authorized by Brahms, they communicate valuable insights into the performance practice of the time. Robert Schumann's Violoncello Concerto op. 129 can be regarded as the first great concerto for this instrument's repertoire. It is thus somewhat surprising that this work had an extremely problematic reception history at the outset.Schumann wrote the score in 1850, during his Dusseldorf years, but there was neither a concrete occasion nor a soloist for a world premiere. After its publication, more years elapsed before the world premiere. It was only towards the end of the 19th century that Schumann's Cello Concerto finally made its breakthrough as a repertoire piece. The Urtext edition is based on the original print of the parts and the piano reduction, which had still been supervised by Schumann. In addition, the autograph of the score was consulted for purposes of comparison. The internationally renowned soloist Heinrich Schiff took part in the preparation of the edition for violoncello and piano. His experiences have been incorporated into his arrangement of the solo part. The Seven Ballet Scenes have been extracted from a ballet music that I composed in 2008. The basic idea was to use different combinations of the three instruments and to get very different characters and forms of movement, which nevertheless form a whole. There is a piece for cello solo, one for violin and piano, one for violin and cello etc. At the beginning, in the middle and at the end there are different variants of a fast movement for all three instruments, which form a kind of refrain. After the great success of his first Piano Trio in d minor op. 49, some five years passed before Mendelssohn set to work on a new composition for this formation. But then the c-minor Trio came into being in a relatively short period in March/April 1845 and was published around a year later. Much more sombre in character than the sibling work, this second trio is also considered much more difficult in terms of technique (above all in the piano part). Thus, it has always stood somewhat in the shadow of the earlier trio. However, chamber music aficionados generally regard it as the more mature and challenging work in terms of compositional technique. The trio, taken from the volume Mendelssohn • Piano Trios HN 957, is now available from Henle for the first time also as a practical single edition.
