Vier Seiten for violoncello is an attempt to present an event that in reality takes about two seconds in extreme slow motion, thus making even the micromovements visible or audible beyond the straight line of motion.When I composed the piece, the fatal accident of Ayrton Senna came to my mind again and again - an accident which was shown on TV in slow motion again and again until it became unbearable. The fast motion of the car immediately before the crash into a concrete wall, a motion which was no longer purposeful but out of control and which had the car pulled to and fro and from side to side, was followed by that crash. In this extreme slow motion, it is no longer shown as a crash but as the fast telescoping of carbon fibre, metal and human body parts.After this crash, as a postlude so to speak, everything suddenly slowed down, tyres and automotive particles floating in the air, the torso of the vehicle swinging until the motion stopped. It was not until this moment that I realized that the whole presentation of the incident had been accompanied by paralyzing silence.- Thomas LarcherVier Seiten is a response to Ayrton Senna's fatal car accident, portrayed in slow motion, as it was repeatedly shown on television at the time. 'Brice Catherin, a cellist and a composer exploring the notion of the one-man-band concept, commissioned this work; this composition was subsequently the result of our collaboration. My aim has been to create a work where the cellist produces sounds using his full body: his hands (employing a variety of extended techniques on the Cello and external objects), his feet, his mouth (singing and playing the harmonica and flexible tube) and even his face on one occasion to muffle the strings. There are two central themes in the work: virtuosity and theatre, both strong, frequent features of my compositional oeuvre. After several meetings and experimentation with Brice, I chose asetup that enhances the musical scope without visually cluttering the stage. I am also using a rather unusual scordatura that not only changes the timbre of the instrument itself, but also helps create unique soundscapes that blend together with the sounds from the spring drums, the human voice (whistling, groans and other effects), a singing bowl, a harmonica and a flexible tube among others. The work is entitled Emmelia and there are two reasons for this: Emmelia derives from the prefix en (in) and the noun melos (harmony), thus meaning in harmony. The composition is structured and developed in clearly defined sections (noisy, harmonious, distorted, etc.), based on information revealed by a spectral analysis of an F1 spectrum on the cello (tuned a fifth below low C), played and recorded using a variety of attacks and triggering objects and methods. Emmelia is also the name of my baby daughter, who has been my constant inspiration since she was born.' - Evis Sammoutis.

When writing his Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33, Camille Saint-Saens created a 'classic' of violoncello literature. But the French musician even wrote other solo works for this instrument: a second concerto, two sonatas, the 'Swan' from 'The Carnival of the Animals' as well as a 'Suite with Piano Accompaniment' Op. 16. Premiered on 27 April 1866 and probably written shortly before, the work is based on the composer's study of tradition, especially of the form of the Baroque suite, integrated in a Romantic tonal language. Many years later (1919) the composer also presented a version with orchestral instead of piano accompaniment, and for this version he replaced movements 3 and 5 and changed the ending of the fourth movement. The present edition contains the text of the orchestral version: The five-movement suite begins with a prelude reminiscent of Bach which is followed by a pleasant serenade, a stylized gavotte and a sentimental romance before a passionate tarantella puts a virtuoso end to the piece. The enthusiastic, melodic 'Suite' is a valuable addition to the cello repertoire, suitable for both tuition and concert purposes.
