When writing his Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33, Camille Saint-Saens created a 'classic' of violoncello literature. But the French musician even wrote other solo works for this instrument: a second concerto, two sonatas, the 'Swan' from 'The Carnival of the Animals' as well as a 'Suite with Piano Accompaniment' Op. 16. Premiered on 27 April 1866 and probably written shortly before, the work is based on the composer's study of tradition, especially of the form of the Baroque suite, integrated in a Romantic tonal language. Many years later (1919) the composer also presented a version with orchestral instead of piano accompaniment, and for this version he replaced movements 3 and 5 and changed the ending of the fourth movement. The present edition contains the text of the orchestral version: The five-movement suite begins with a prelude reminiscent of Bach which is followed by a pleasant serenade, a stylized gavotte and a sentimental romance before a passionate tarantella puts a virtuoso end to the piece. The enthusiastic, melodic 'Suite' is a valuable addition to the cello repertoire, suitable for both tuition and concert purposes.

ColourStrings Cello ABC: Book E continues the Cello ABC series. Book E teaches the new material, the 5 di erent pentachords, using numerous folk songs and chamber music works. Teachers should choose the music that best suits their pedagogical aims and needs. The new element, the minor 2nd interval was introduced by adding the FA and TI notes. Later on these are expanded into the four types of tetrachrods (Major, Minor, Phrygian, Lydian). Melodies based on these tone sets (including folk song arrangements) help develop the students' taste and sense of musical character (which is the foundation for understanding the music of the 20th century). The precise and interesting ngerings aid their sense of pitch. The four types of tetrachords are: DO-RE-MI-FA = SO-LA-TI-DO (major) RE-MI-FA-SO = LA-TI-DO-RE (minor) MI-FA-SO-LA = TI-DO-RE-MI (Phrygian) FA-SO-LA-TI (Lydian) with three major 2nd intervals.

The concertos in A minor, B flat major and A major were first written as violoncello concertos between 1750 and 1753. They thus rank among the very first concertos for solo cello in Germany. The A minor Concerto, composed in 1750, is performed quite frequently today. C. P. E. Bach most likely wrote the Concerto in B flat major Wq. 171 as the last of the little work group in 1753 in Potsdam, at the court of King Frederick the Great. He reworked the composition for flute and harpsichord shortly thereafter. Various sources prove that copies of the work had made it known quite extensively in the second half of the 18th century. In his new Urtext edition, Ulrich Leisinger bases himself on two reliable manuscripts.
