Christoph Schaffrath's Sonata For Cello and Continuo In G is set for ABRSM Grade 4 Cello Syllabus.

The nine sonatas for Cello and Basso Continuo by Antonio Vivaldi are among the most famous Cello works of the Baroque era. Thanks to their moderate technical demands the pieces are an integral part of music lessons as well as of private music-making. But even for the professional early music scene they form a focus of the Cello repertoire. The new edition of the Wiener Urtext Edition serves the needs and demands of all three target groups alike providing a reliable musical text which is no longer based on the unauthorized first Paris edition by Le Clerc & Boivin but on a copy from Naples revised by Vivaldi himself as well as on two othermanuscripts associated with the composer from the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and the music library of the Counts of Schönborn at Wiesentheid. Apart from the solo part the edition comprises a Piano (Harpsichord) score with realized Basso Continuo which should be very welcome to pupils and amateurs. An unrealized Basso Continuo part has been added for the professional Continuo player in which the figures of the first Paris edition has been included. Even if they do not trace back to Vivaldi himself they bear witness to the contemporary Basso Continuo practice and can serve as a guide for the execution of Vivaldi's unfigured Bass part. More detailed information on the performance practice is provided in the notes on interpretation by Gerhart Darmstadt which are based on contemporary sources.

Little is known about the life of Italian composer Pietro Giuseppe Gaetana Boni so it is fortunate that at least some of his music survives. His 1917 work the tenth of his chamber sonatas Sonata in C for Cello and Basso Continuo Op.1 No.10 has been edited by Hugo Ruf and the Cello fingering by Rainer Mohrs to create an authentic and accurate reproduction of this fine work.

Since they belong to the basic repertory of the cello it increases the importance of the edition that the music includes the partly deviating performing marks of the surviving authentic sources of the pieces for the first time.

The composer states:'The term 'oblique strategies? was coined jointly by British musician Brian Eno and German-born British visual artist Peter Schmidt to describe a series of printed cards they developed throughout the 1970's. The cards had their origins in sets of uncannily similar working principles that both artists had established independently, and featured aphorisms intended as a means of triggering inspiration or providing useful stimulus during the creative process, particularly when encountering difficulties of fatigue or time constraint.As Eno and Schmidt wrote in their introduction to the first edition in 1975: 'They can be used as a pack (a set of possibilities being continuously reviewed in the mind) or by drawing a single card from the shuffled pack when a dilemma occurs in a working situation. In this case, the card is trusted even if its appropriateness is quite unclear. They are not final, as new ideas will present themselves, and others will become self-evident?.I chose eleven of Eno and Schmidt's strategies, ordering them in a way that revealed to me a logic and potential inter-relatedness within a hitherto disparate set of single ideas I had assembled for solo cello, each of them in turn a reflection upon the commission's initial purpose of creating a test piece for the 2014 Emanuel Feuermann cello competition.It's my hope then that the resultant composition may provide not only an interesting test of the competitors' talents but also offer the interpreter an opportunity to reflect upon the delights and pitfalls of creativity as he or she comes to terms with the various musical and technical challenges to be found within these ten minutes of music for solo cello.? / Violoncelle

The surviving manuscripts provide a clear insight into his working methods and his intentions regarding the work’s performance.The editor Jonathan Del Mar has closely scrutinised the autograph solo piano part and reproduced Beethoven’ssophisticated performance instructions for the first time in a modern edition. Among other things this has special repercussions for the left-hand figured bass line of the piano part during the tutti passages.As with the Piano Concertos Nos. 1 to 4 the Piano reduction appears with a separate solo part containing all the information needed by the soloist to conduct the ensemble from the Piano.
