The piece was commissioned by a colleague Brett Dean of the Berliner Philharmoniker, the violist Walter Kussner, as part of a CD project with works for solo viola in 1998/99. Since then, the composer himself has played it himself countless times in concerts andlectures. Here it is now in a congenial adaptation for cello. The title Intimate Decisions comes from a painting by Dean's wife, theAustralian painter Heather Betts, and indicates the private nature of the music. According to Dean, writing a piece for a solo string instrument was strangely similar to writing a personal letter or an intense conversation with a close friend. The piece begins with a short series of individual intervals of a rather intangible character, followed by a more emphatic motif of a minor sixth and minor ninth, and later a chain of harmonies whirring down the lower strings. The various developing characters go through an increasingly decisive, ultimately dramatic conversation, in rhapsodic alternation with flighty virtuosity, but also calm and delicacy, only to fade away like an echo at the end.

Rolf Martinsson

Hummel's piece for solo violoncello and 13 strings follows Hermann Hesse's famous poem 'Stufen' ('Steps') with regard to form and content. Hummel, a cellist himself, arranges the solo part with playing techniques and tone colours that are typical of the instrument. The work begins and ends with a perfect fifth which sets a clear, concise motif. Short phrases in distinctive bowing patterns and harmonics determine the intensive dialogue between solo instrument and the group of 13 string instruments. At the end, the tension leads to an all-explanatory B-A-C-H theme: an unmistakable homage to the old master.

Salat Babilya was inspired by music from Iraq, in particular the beautiful sonorities of the oud, a variety of Middle Eastern lute dating back to antiquity. An oud-like resonance is evoked without the use of a bow via a combination of 'arabic' scales, open strings, ringing harmonics and ornamental inflections. The particular oud piece that inspired this one was written to help lull the children of Bagdad to sleep during bombing raids and bears the same title, which translates from the Arabic as 'Babylonian Prayer. The concertos in A minor and B flat major were first written as violoncello concertos between 1750 and 1753. They thus rank among the very first concertos for solo cello in Germany.

The concertos in A minor, B flat major and A major were first written as violoncello concertos between 1750 and 1753. They thus rank among the very first concertos for solo cello in Germany. The A minor Concerto, composed in 1750, is performed quite frequently today. C. P. E. Bach most likely wrote the Concerto in B flat major Wq. 171 as the last of the little work group in 1753 in Potsdam, at the court of King Frederick the Great. He reworked the composition for flute and harpsichord shortly thereafter. Various sources prove that copies of the work had made it known quite extensively in the second half of the 18th century. In his new Urtext edition, Ulrich Leisinger bases himself on two reliable manuscripts.

Aurora Borealis for solo cello evokes the mystery and drama of the northern lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. The Aurora Borealis was out. It hung and moved with majesty in folds like an infinite traveler upstage in an infinite theater. In colors of rose and lavender and purple it moved and pulsed against the night, and the frost-sharpened stars shone through it. Compulsory Piece for the Final Round oft he ARD International Music Competition (Munich, September 2019)
ISBN 9790004188279. 9 x 12 inches.
The sound of the cello in this piece should be foggy like voice of Ella Fitzgerald. Sweet, smooth and pleasant, but at the same time slightly hoarse, rustle, dirty. There are almost only natural harmonics; either single, or in chords (triple-stops) including two natural harmonics, or double-stops of two harmonics. All should be played flautando, sul tasto and molto lasciar vibrare. Flautando and sul tasto should serve in search for the foggy color - harmonics should speak less clear than normally, but more smooth and decent.(Martin Smolka) ,Like Ella' would be suited to a player of a high standard as many harmonics are in higher positions and played as triple-stops. I would recommend ,Like Ella' to an advanced cellist seeking to learn a piece of modern music to add to their concert repertoire.(Mitchell Smith, AUSTA Stringendo)Compulsory Piece for the Final Round of the ARD International Music Competition (Munich, September 2019).
