(Four Cities)-Faz?l Say?s ?Four Cities? Sonata can be considered as a journey through four cities of Anatolia. This work has taken its inspiration from Faz?l Say?s memories and events of his life. Bodrum is well known as a city greatly frequented by tourists which sets it apart from the other three locations. These four very different cities with their individual cultures have been selected from the nearly 2000-km wide expanse of Anatolia. SivasSivas is a conservative city located in Eastern Anatolia which is known for its large Alevi population. As¸?k Veysel is an Alevi Ozan (poet) and Faz?l Say has been inspired by his song ?Saz?m? (my saz/myinstrument) in the first part of this work. The movement is concluded on a melancholy tone in imitation of this ethnic instrument. HopaA traditional wedding provided Faz?l Say with his inspiration for this second movement which embraces Eastern Black Sea culture. Horon is a very fast folk dance in 7/16 time which is played on the kemence a typical instrument of the Eastern Black Sea region. The music also touches on Caucasian Georgian and Laz dances anonymous songs ?Laz women? and ?Cilveloy nanayda? (a Turkish song). AnkaraAnkara was declared the capital city of Turkey by Atatürk in 1923. This city with its population of four million was where the composer was born and also spent his childhood. ?Ankara?n?n Tas¸?na Bak? a rebellious song dating back to the First World War can be discerned in the mournful middle section. The movement with its atmosphere of tragedy evokes the republican spirit and the ambience of former times. BodrumBodrum is universally known as the Saint-Tropez of Turkey. A famous street in the city is fringed with countless bars and pubs from which a cacophony of different music can be heard ranging from jazz pop and rock to folk songs. Faz?l Say blends the sounds from these pubs in this movement which includes a walking theme in a swinging jazz tempo. The movement makes a

A Song without Words for Violoncello Solo-Manfred Trojahn on the origin and title of his impressive virtuoso solo work:'Admittedly I do not know if he had seagulls but since Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg he will not have gone through life without at least the impression of the cry of seagulls. Nor do I know if seagulls played any part in his life in Rome. I myself was astonished when one or two years ago in the Villa Massimo I was not exactly annoyed but disturbed by the strong rhythmical cry of seagulls. I was just about to write a bassoon solo when the seagulls started. Then the idea came to me that precisely this sequence of notes could serve as the basis of the work. And the sequence for thebassoon solo is in turn the basis of the piece for violoncello - this is how titles are born... Of course the violoncello meanders with virtuosic ease from the seagull motif to the 'elf-like' skittering brought to music by Mendelssohn and used time and again in his compositions finally becoming a cabaletta. Now cabalettas are not very representative of Mendelssohn but as I was composing I definitely wanted to put a cabaletta in this passage. I am sure Mendelssohn and I will easily agree on this especially since later justice is done to him in the rapid passages and of course in the tonal cadenza at the very end which is more indicative of his time than of mine ... isn't it?'

Max Reger composed his Three Suites for Violoncello solo in 1914/15 for three important cellists and teachers of the time: Julius Klengel, Hugo Becker and Paul Grümmer. Klengel was also friends with the composer. Reger humorously told him of his Opus 131c in summer 1915, calling them 'strapping triplets?. He asked the cellist to 'use these three things as often as possible in your lessons?, although they presuppose a great degree of skill on the students' part. In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D'Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D'Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel's virtuoso classic 'Tzigane?. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated 'Tzigane? and both versions remain a 'must? for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D'Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career. This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel's masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer's earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition - one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of 'Tzigane? from the estate of Jelly D'Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection. The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D'Aranyi. D'Aranyi's alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice.
