After Henrik Ibsen obtained sensational feedback for his verse drama Peer Gynt, he decided to arrange the text for stage performances as well. He requested incidental music from Edvard Grieg, who immediately assured Ibsen of his cooperation. In its new version, Peer Gynt was given its first performance in February 1876 and also scored a tremendous success. After a further revision of his music, Grieg compiled four of the most striking pieces into an orchestral suite in 1888, and repeated this procedure three years later for a second suite. In 1884 the Norwegian city of Bergen celebrated the 200th birthday of Ludvig Holberg, one of its most famous sons and a symbolic figure of the late Baroque era. For this occasion Grieg wrote the piano suite Aus Holbergs Zeit , which he orchestrated for string orchestra. To this day, the Suite - particularly in this arrangement - ranks among Grieg's most popular works. By using the romantic string sound, Grieg brings the late Baroque orchestral suite and its various dance forms to life again. Along with the string serenades of Dvorak and Tchaikovsky, Aus Holbergs Zeit is regarded as the third great late-romantic work for string orchestra. Heptasyllabes by Richard Dubugnon is a contemporary work for seven Cellos. This lyrical and rhythmical composition is a 'mini concertante' for solo Cello accompanied by a double chorus of six Cellos.
