Franz Schubert’s Sonata in A minor D. 821 was originally written for piano and arpeggione an instrument of the 1820s combining features of the guitar and the cello. This instrument was in use for just a short period of time so that the composition has now become standard repertoire for cello and piano and this is the version presented here. A handwritten violin part in the hand of Anton Diabelli kept by the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris however shows that the sonata’s arpeggione part was initially arranged for violin long before the first print in 1871 introduced the well-known version for cello and piano. WienerUrtext also publishes Diabelli’s arrangement for violin and piano in a separate edition. Both editions are essentially based on Schubert’s autograph the cello part in principle relies on the first printed edition of 1871 the violin part is based on Diabelli’s arrangement. 

Six Songs and Arias-This volume contains a selection of music intended to show off the beautiful cantabile qualities of the Cello. The works chosen were all originally written for voice. The six pieces are carefully chosen from the various sources and will provide the cellist with some different and enjoyable melodic music. The first part is written for solo piano (Now I, BA 11073), the second for unaccompanied cello. The two instruments are then combined in the concluding third part, Uriel (BA 11013). All three pieces were inspired by the Abstract Expressionist paintings of the American artist Barnett Newman. Newman's work has had a formative impact on Matthias Pintscher's artistic philosophy: what does it mean to reduce things to essentials while seeking maximum immediacy of expression? Several of Newman's paintings have a radiant light of uncommon intensity, yet resembling a dark illumination. The same sort of thing is found in the late works of Franz Schubert, where a comparable profundity and retrospective yearning likewise shine through the surface of even the brightest tonalities.
