Between the months of May 1933 and August 1934 Benjamin Britten composed a series of twelve songs with piano for children published as Friday Afternoons Op.7 and were written for his brother's preparatory school at Prestatyn where the singing classes took place on Fridays.This edition also includes the song Lone Dog which was withdrawn from the cycle in 1936 due to copyright problems.

Seasons and Charms is a collection of short pieces for young people's voices and piano commissioned by Aldeburgh Music for the Friday Afternoons Project.Inspired by Benjamin Britten Friday Afternoons is an initiative created by Snape Maltings (formerly Aldeburgh Music) to open up a world of singing for children and young people.

Nico Muhly's The Sweets Of Evening (2006) was written for Dianne Berkun and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. This work is for children's voices and Piano. Having worked with this group of musicians many times before Muhly was honored to finally write them a piece. Having sung in a boy choir himself Muhly is fascinated and intimate with the changing nature of young voices and looked for a text that is itself transitory – in this instance depicting the movement between dusk and night. A great fan of Christopher Smart’s poetry and particularly of Benjamin Britten’s setting of fragments from Jubilate Agno; Muhly's settingnods to Britten in its episodic nature and generosity towards the singers. He Is Alive is an enchanting work which presents the Easter story in a way relevant to young children. The simplistic enactment with optional narration provides schools and church groups with a delightful musical for Eastercelebrations. Biblical texts are given so that everyone can enjoy reading the original story and these can be read between the songs.
