David Urrows' subtle use of harmonic color creates an exquisite sense of reflection for Edmund Spencer's prayer of supplication and intercession. Choir and solo voice are undergirded by a colorful organ accompaniment. All performing forces are joined to build toward a powerful harmonic and rhythmic climax. Middle and upper vocal ranges are also employed to heighten the meaning of the text. This anthem will serve well throughout the entire church year.

Author: Thomas Campion.
Thomas Campion's Never weather-beaten sail is a sprightly text that powerfully evokes the sailor's plea for God's calming presence upon the sea's unrelenting rushing waves. At the opening of this work for unaccompanied mixed voices, the jaunty alto/tenor movement in thirds symbolises the curling waves of the undulating sea, the mellifluous soprano melody represents the boat's sails, and the bass section's never-changing 'A' provides the anchor. All four voices then come together in homophony, urging God to come quickly...and take my soul to rest. Rather than a simple repetition of thematic material in the manner of a standard hymn, the texture alters through the rest of the work until the very end where all voices gradually fade away into the distance, leaving what seems like a lone voice in the wilderness to cry to Thee. Contrasting to other well-known setting of this text, this new work provides a fresh interpretation, suitable for intermediate choirs.

Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe (I stand with my open grave before me) BWV 156 is one of the few surviving cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach that is based on texts from the so-called Picander cycle. As in several other cantatas that use texts from this poet, Bach opens the work with a sinfonia, most likely taken from an earlier concerto that didn't survive and is later reused as the slow movement of the famous harpsichord concerto in F minor BWV 1056. In the first aria, the poet combines his text with a well-known chorale, a technique that is often found in Bach's cantatas, particularly those from the pre-Leipzig period. The cantata is comprised of six short movements; the choir is used only in the final chorale. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3115600.

The Gloria in Excelsis was written by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford for the coronation of HM King George V on 22 June 1911. It was an occasion of some note in the annals of British music, for Elgar's Coronation March and Parry's grand festival Te Deum were also heard for the first time that day. In addition, there was music by Thomas Tallis, Orlando Gibbons and Sir John Stainer, as well as by the Master of the King's Music and organist of St George's Chapel, Windsor, Sir Walter Parratt. It was published the following year as part of Stanford's Opus 128, the Festal Communion Service for voices and orchestra, which was also made available with the accompaniment arranged by the composer for organ. However, such was the popularity of the Gloria, a magnificent and wholly representative example of Stanford's genius for church music, that it soon became popular as a separate piece, either with organ or orchestral accompaniment, and it was included in the orders of service for the coronations of HM King George VI on 12 May 1937 and HM Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. Orchestral material is available on hire (ref. HL189).

Performance Material on Hire[Solo: SAATB - Str - Bc]Thanks to its patron the Duke Francesco II, Modena became a capital city worldwide for the oratorio genre: renowned maestro di cappella in Ferrara, also Bassani wished to offer to the Duke his own work, setting aside for him the summit of his melodic and dramaturgical inventiveness.According to the documents that we have, the performance of Giona was Bassani's debut at the court of Francesco II. Born in Padua around 1650, the composer carried out the main part of his activities in Ferrara, where he was organist (probably from 1667), and maestro di cappella at the Accademia della Morte (from 1683), and subsequently also at the Cathedral (from 1686); he also became a member of the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna (in 1677) and was committed to Alessandro II Pico, Duke of Mirandola and Marquis of Concordia. In 1712 he moved to Bergamo, where he was maestro di cappella at S. Maria Maggiore; he died there on 1st October 1716. Before his commission in Modena, the <> - as he was often called at that time - had already printed seven instrumental and vocal works as well as a few operas and oratorios.

A sweet text by Kathy Powell joins the sound of a lullaby on the air calling to the shepherds with images of the bright star that led them to the Christ child. Interesting harmonic textures lead each verse to its climax. The accompaniment and choral movement work together in a lovely blend creating a singular motif that depicts the journey of the shepherds and then invokes us to hear the lullaby and find the love of God in the infant Jesus.

Reminiscent of the famous setting by Randall Thompson, the melody in the soprano is accompanied by a litany-like repetition in the inner voices which is equally intimate and exciting.

This is an unusual yet remarkably moving new anthem for Easter. Joel Martinson has taken a contemporary poem by John Thornburg that expresses all the anguish as well as hope of the three women at the tomb. The muted brass quintet creates a mournful sound as the women express their loss and pain. As the women realize that the unthinkable has happened the music builds into an inexorable crescendo of praise and hope and the piece ends on an exuberant Alleluia. The vocal parts while wide in scope are most satisfying to sing and the instrumental parts are written imaginatively so as to express the poetic text. This will most welcome as a major addition to the literature for Easter morning.
