After the really well-known cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott BWV 80, Bach's only other cantata for Reformation Day is Gott, der Herr, ist Sonn und Schild BWV 79. The central chorale movement Nun danket alle Gott has become extremely famous separately from the cantata. This movement is characterised by the catchy melody of the two horn parts with their interludes between the lines of the chorale. These in turn are taken from the freely-composed opening chorus, thus forming a surprising link between the movement for chorus and the chorale. The chorus and both the arias in the cantata were used later in a Latin parody in the so-called Lutheran Masses. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3107900.

Johann Heinrich Rolle was born in 1716 in Quedlinburg. In 1752 he was appointed music director of the city of Magedburg. The cantata Siehe Finsternis bedeckt das Erdreich und Dunkel der Volker was written for the feast of Christmas. We do not know the year of its first performance. The libretto is by Johann Samuel Patzke. The cantata comprises six movements, framed by an extended and festively-orchestrated opening chorus and a simple four-part chorale movement. The first movement, with its unusual harmonies and contrasting tempi, is very distinctive.

The cantata Mein liebster Jesus ist verloren BWV 154 was first performed on 9 January 1724, the 1st Sunday after Epiphany. The structure and extent of the work are unusual: it comprises eight, instead of the usual six movements. With a duration of around 15 minutes, it is a concise work. As well as this, at the beginning of the cantata there is an aria instead of the usual opening chorus. A chorale features at the end and in the third movement. Its brevity and straightforward arias make this cantata suitable for inclusion in any church service, and is easy for amateur ensembles to master. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3115400.

This is one of three early renaissance Marian motets, along with Mouton's Nesciens Mater and de la Rue's Gaude Virgo, edited by Ross Duffin. It is a classic example of this great composer's balanced unfolding of motifs, with two-part paired imitation followed by four-voice imitative sections and punctuations in homophony. Especially, striking is the personal supplication at the end, in the words O rnater dei, memento mei. Fazer Editions of Early Music is a choral series under the editorial supervision of Paul Hillier, founder and artistic director of the renowned Hilliard Ensemble. Although each title in this series is the result of careful scholarly research and is a reliable source for musicologists, the series' main purpose is to make practical performing editions available to choirs and other vocal ensembles. The original C clefs have been replaced by G and F clefs and the note values adapted to conform to modern practice. All the works in the series are intended for mixed voices. Each title includes a lengthy introduction in English and notes on the editorial principles. Where necessary, an English translation of the text and a guide to pronunciation are provided.

This setting of “Joy to the World†has a “Handelian†feel, complete with a sly quotation from the “Hallelujah†chorus at the end. Stanzas 2 and 3 are combined and set in fugal fashion. Fun to sing, it will become a favorite of the choir and the congregation! The string bass part is optional.

This Missa in G minor is the only surviving work in this genre by Johann Hugo von Wilderer; his output as Kapellmeister at the Electoral Palatinate court, which resided in Mannheim from 1720 onwards, was mainly devoted to opera. The three-part Kyrie, the through-composed Gloria, and the partly obbligato instrumental writing show the influence of the early Neapolitan mass style. The music-historic significance of the Missa is firstly that it is an important example of the church music performed around 1700 at the Electoral Palatinate court, but above all that Bach evidently used it as a source of inspiration for the Kyrie of the Mass in B minor, as shown, for example in the form of the Adagio introduction of the Kyrie I in both works.

The cantata Ihr Menschen, ruhmet Gottes Liebe (You mortals, tell of God's devotion) BWV 167 is one of the first works which Bach wrote in his capacity as Kantor of St. Thomas's Leipzig. It was composed for the Feast of St John, and was performed for the first time on 24 June 1723 in Leipzig. This concise and lively cantata is scored for four vocal soloists and modest instrumental forces; only the final chorale Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren is for all four vocal parts and the use of strings, with the soprano reinforced by a slide trumpet. The text is partly drawn verbatim from Zacharias's hymn of praise in St Luke's Gospel chapter 1. It praises God's grace and love, as fulfilled by his promise of salvation through Jesus for which John has prepared the way and the path. Score available separately - see item CA.3116700.

Among Verdi's many compositions, as a work of sacred music, the Requiem remains unique. It was composed as a musical memorial for the Italian national poet Allessandro Manzoni, deeply admired by Verdi, and was first performed on the first anniversary of his death on 22 May 1874 in Milan Cathedral. The exploration of many extremes places Verdi's tonal language with musical means wholly in the service of a dramatized liturgy. The edition is based on the autograph as the primary source and makes accessible one of the most important requiem settings of the 19th century in a modern scholarly edition. In addition to the musical text the score contains a detailed foreword in three languages, a critical report with information on the source situation, the edition and the various readings. The complete performance material will be available for sale. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.2730300.

The first performance of this cantata, which belongs to Bach's third annual cycle of cantatas, took place on the 2nd day of Christmas in 1725. With the exception of the closing chorale, with a text from 1711 by Georg Christian Lehms, the text of the cantata refers to St. Stephan, the first martyr of the New Testament and patron saint whose name day occurs on 26 December. In a dialog between the Soul (Soprano) and Jesus (bass) the struggle with sin is recounted respectively in two expressive arias arias. The entire orchestra is involved in the first movement as well as in in the closing chorale together with the choir.
