Gerald Barry's The coming of winter is a setting of an Irish poem dating from the 9th or 10th century, and was commissioned for the 34th Seminar on Contemporary Choral Music at University College, Cork, in May 1997. The setting is notable for its idiosyncratic use of text: not only are the words of the poem sung both forwards and backwards, but the second half of the piece is given over to percussive nonsense syllables, making this a quirky but highly invigorating image of 'the coming of winter'.

Quiet, crisp lines are echoed from voice to voice and punctuated with chilling whispers in this rhythmic setting told from winter's point of view. A mixed meter refrain creates a sense of surprise when ice locks the fountains and chains the river, and a layered counterpoint section builds to a frosty celebration of the season.

This is a short, skilful song setting, a typical English Christmas carol with an Advent text: the cold winter as symbol of the frozen world, waiting for Christ. The setting, through-composed in verses, in five-four time, captivates through its sparse use of diatonic formations of dissonances, cantabile imitations and wide-arching melodic lines. This little gem encourages a beautiful, expressive legato interpretation and makes an excellent counterpart to Deilig (Carus 9.664) in an Advent concert program.
