for SATB double choir unaccompanied A setting of Shakespeare's much-loved Sonnet 18, Bednall's expressive work highlights this timeless text with sumptuous harmony, including pleasing tonal shifts and topical false relations. Various choral textures are explored, from the imitative lines of 'Sometime too hot', to the warm richness of the closing pages, where the choir divides into eight parts. This work is part of the New Horizons series and a piano reduction is included for rehearsal purposes.
About Oxford New Horizons
New Horizons showcases the wealth of exciting, innovative, and occasionally challenging choral music being written today. It encompasses the whole gamut of small-scale choral genres, both secular and sacred, and includes pieces for upper-voice and mixed choirs. With titles by some of the most accomplished choral composers active in Great Britain and abroad, the series introduces new repertoire and fresh talent to a broad spectrum of choirs. New Horizons features composers with growing reputations for quality composition reflecting a strong individual voice. The series is continually expanding and should be the first place to look for attractive and performable contemporary choral music.

This deeply moving and compelling musical is a beautiful response to God's loving, sacrificial and powerful act of redemption. Sacred and cherished hymns, popular worship songs, and new, expressive compositions combine in arrangements that are both poignant and moving, while retaining a level of difficulty that even the smallest choir can master. The emotive narrations are derived directly from the scriptures and perfectly frame the musical settings. In addition, the work includes several solo and congregational opportunities for participation. Echoing the song of heaven's eternity, this 47-minute presentation is assembled in 4 main sections: I. Worthy of Praise II. Worthy of Our Love III. A Worthy Sacrifice IV. Worthy of Exaltation

I have recently been incredibly inspired by the writings of the great Bengali mystic Rabindranath Tagore, whose monumental collection of poetry Gitanjali won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. This book introduces the reader to a new awareness of the world that surrounds us, deepening the connection between nature and the human spirit that we all yearn for. Verse 69 is particularly joyful and life-affirming: an ecstatic realization of the energies that move in ceaseless ebb and flow through us, our lives, and our natural environment. Each individual line of this verse has a unique character and color, so I have placed each in a key that I feel suits the mood of the text. The constantly flowing ostinati that weave their way throughout are collectively a musical representation of the “stream of life†to which Tagore refers. This flowing line can be found even in the subdued third line of text, which makes reference to the “ocean-cradle of birth and of death.†In similar fashion, the more complex rhythmic cells found within the stream (e.g., measures 21–40) are a product of Tagore’s ecstatic tone. Ultimately this piece is simply meant to be an expression of joy. It is dedicated with great admiration to the commissioning ensemble, the Fort Myers High School Greenwave Singers, and their conductor Matt Koller. This tremendous ensemble is a prime example of choral music education in practice in the United States, and I feel honored to have been given this opportunity to work with them. —Thomas LaVoy.

David von Kampen masterfully crafts the text of Revelation 21:4 - 5 into an inspiring and striking piece for SATB and piano. A variety of compositional techniques—including declamatory writing, polytextuality, and a skillful use of key—connect the biblical text and song powerfully. Smaller choirs can easily adapt this piece for two-part voicing by singing just soprano and tenor in the middle section. Use this piece for Easter Vigil, during the rest of the Easter Season, on All Saints' Day, and for funerals.
Revelation 21:4 - 5 (ESV)
He will wipe away ev'ry tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
And He who was seated on the throne said, 'Behold, I am making all things new.'
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

“Almiraâ€, Handel’s first opera, was well received when premiered in 1705 at the Theater am Gänsemarkt in Hamburg. The director was Reinhard Keiser, who, remarkably, had himself already set Friedrich Christian Feustking’s text to music. The role of Fernando was sung by Johann Mattheson. The translation used by Handel leaves several Italian arias in their original language, resulting in a delightful mixture of German and Italian. The opera which, after sundry entangled romances, ends in the wedding of three couples, is characterised by exuberant scenes: the procession at Almira’s crowning ceremony, a duel, a prison scene and a masked-ball involving the three continents Europe, Africa and Asia. The vocal score to “Almira†by George Frideric Handel brings about a small sensation: Whilst conducting a reenactment of this work in 1732, Georg Philipp Telemann removed the Aria no. 28 “Ingrato, spietato†from his conducting score. Since then this aria has been deemed lost. Due to necessity only the edited vocal text devoid of any music was presented in the 1994 volume of the “Halle Handel Editionâ€. Thanks to a recently discovered contemporary manuscript copy from the beginning of the 18th century which was found in the music library of the Mariengymnasium in Jever, this aria has now been made available to performers for the first time in this new vocal score edition. Previous to this the corresponding pages could only be seen as a facsimile in an article of the “Göttinger Händel-Beiträgeâ€.Now the aria can be performed again. Furthermore, with the help of this new source, missing measures in the basso continuo which had initially been completed by the editor of the “Halle Handel Edition†volume, could be reconstructed from the basso continuo part of the Bellante aria “Ich brenne zwar†(no. 71).

Anthony Caesar finds a moving text by the teenage Etonian, Oxford Movement influenced, Digby Mackworth Dolben (1848-1867), who died tragically young while swimming. Canon Caesar's anthem is a classic example of the Franciscan principle (observed by lamentably few composers) of true beauty springing from simplicity. The text inspires a sort of post-Howells harmonic idiom, though with the choir's part kept remarkably simple. The most inspired moment comes when the opening progression, which sets the poignant tension of the first three verses, is subtly transformed into radiant certainty in the last verse: I asked for Thee- / And Thou didst come / To take me home / Within Thy Heart to be. Although the parts divide at times, this miniature classic is not too difficult for any well rehearsed four-part choir.

“There is one body and one Spirit--just as you were called to one hopewhen you were called-- one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God andFather of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” Ephesians4:4-6There are those who claim that many paths exist that lead to whomeverwe believe or define God to be. However, we do not define God - Hedefines us. And there is only ONE path to the Father and it isclearly marked by a bloodstained cross and an empty tomb. Those who claim the Master are reborn into a bloodline that does nottrace its origin to a culture - but to a cross. . .does not dependupon what we bring - but upon what He freely gives . . .not based intrying to know about God - but actually knowing God.“Yes - we know that there is only one God, the Father, who createdeverything, and we live for Him. And there is only one Lord, JesusChrist, through whom God made everything and through whom we havebeen given life.” 1 Corinthians 8:6“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God forthe salvation of everyone who believes . . .” Romans 1:16.

I particularly enjoy this aspect of text setting, and hope that it creates a somewhat spontaneous, improvisatory impression.
