Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director’s discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts.

This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The ââ¬ÅGloriaââ¬Â is set for SATB divisi (all parts divide) in a quick and rhythmic mixed meter. The movement begins with a sort of call and response where Choir 1 states a motif and Choir 2 responds with the same motif (sometimes at a different pitch level.) A soloist begins the middle section, Piu Allegro (ââ¬ÅQui tollisââ¬Â) and the first material returns, but in unison this time, at ââ¬ÅJesu Christe.ââ¬Â Duration 5:30.

This motet, no matter how popular it is, presents Bach scholars with a few puzzles: is it really by Bach? Somehow the text doesn't fit with the notes, at least not so that it's comfortable to sing. And is the musicologists' problem the same for the choral singers? Not, of course not in the Alleluia fugue: in that, there really is something to worry about ... year of composition unknown. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3123000.

This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The ââ¬ÅBenedictusââ¬Â is for SATB divisi and begins with a short 6/8 declamation, then moves into a section where the rhythmic idea is set in a sort of off-the-beat fashion, with all parts divisi playing against each other. A unison section with the off-the-beat motif follows. A majestic ââ¬ÅHosannaââ¬Â follows. The ââ¬ÅAgnus Deiââ¬Â is set in a rubato triple meter in a homophonic style with close chords (also divisi.) At the ââ¬Åmiserere,ââ¬Â the choir 1/choir 2 call and response motif from the ââ¬ÅGloriaââ¬Â returns. That same motif continues into the ââ¬Ådona nobis pacem,ââ¬Â as the movement (and the entire Mass) ends with a long decrescendo into a quiet call, ââ¬ÅPacem.ââ¬Â Duration 7:33.

The cantata Nun danket alle Gott (Now thank we all our God) BWV 192 is based on the text of the well-known hymn. It is therefore one of a small number of chorale cantatas which contain no free poetic texts. Correspondingly, there are no recitatives either. It has only recently been assumed that this three-movement work was not intended for Leipzig, but was actually written in 1730 for Bach's prestigious position as Kapellmeister of Saxe-Weissenfels. The court of Duke Christian enjoyed the its sojourn in the newly-renovated castle of its secondary residence in Sangerhausen and, at Trinity, in the court church, celebrated the anniversary of its consecration with festive music. Bach evidently occasionally contributed to this. The work does not survive complete. Even in the 18th century a full score evidently no longer existed, just a set of parts, the tenor part of which is entirely missing. For the new edition the missing part has been reconstructed by Detlev Schulten (Leipzig). Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3119200.

Kyle Johnson has taken the traditional canon “When Jesus Wept†and creatively deconstructed it. We never hear more than two parts in canon with each other at the same time. Then he introduces a new counter-melody in the other parts and fills out the harmonies in other ways. While the words can be lost in the traditional four-part canon, the overall effect of Johnson’s approach is to create a moving meditation on the text. Easily accessible and highly recommended for small SATB choirs, but any size group will appreciate the artistry of this piece.
