The Baccanale is a genre of traditional Italian choral song without instrumental accompaniment. In most cases it is sung by two tenors and a bass. Most of the anonymous song are in a straightforward, homophonic-syllabic style. These songs are often at carnival time and are jocular in content, with a playful, ironic touch and they contain many erotic allusions. In addition to the Italian text of the 12 settings, sometimes in dialect, German singing texts are also included.

This new mass setting includes Duncan’s highly favored through-composed Gloria of the same name, and it does not disappoint. Beautiful in their simplicity, the congregational melodies of the Alleluia and eucharistic acclamations can be complemented by an optional soprano descant and B-flat or C trumpet part. The penitential act, Gloria, and Lamb of God also include SATB choral writing. Overall, this mass setting is bright, joyful, and uplifting. It will truly inspire your singing assembly.

The tune SEGUNDO is intended specifically for hymn texts in long meter (LM, or 88 88) that can benefit from a sense of gravitas. In performance, the entire hymn may be sung by unison choir, or if desired, the beginning stanzas may be sung by one or more soloists or sections allowing the piece to build over its four stanzas, so that the last stanza, with its soaring descant, pours forth rife with emotion.

This canticle is appointed as the response to the fifth reading of the Easter Vigil, for the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart (year B), and is optional for the Baptism of the Lord (year B). It could also be used as a song during the sprinkling rite throughout the Easter Season. The setting requires a strong cantor to clearly proclaim the calls and elicit a strong congregation response. Because the cantor always sings the call, various language configurations are possible.
