Monde évanoui (Fragments pour Babylone) est ma première oeuvre véritablement écrite pour choeur mixte, dans la mesure où les précédentes pièces destinées à un grand effectif vocal composées à l'attention d'Accentus laissaient la part belle aux solistes. Basée sur un texte écrit spécialement pour l'occasion par Pierre Grosz, auteur connu notamment pour ses paroles de chansons (Michel Polnareff, Michel Jonasz, Gilbert Bécaud), cette oeuvre à huit parties vocales oppose des sections mouvantes, où les différentes strates sont indépendantes les unes des autres pour créer un contrepoint dense, à des passages plus verticaux, qui apparaissent comme des résolutions des progressions précédentes ('par les vents, par les crues, par le temps'). Le conflit entre des textures lisses où le texte est rendu à peine intelligible par son caractère dilaté et des séquences homophoniques rythme une forme en sections contrastées, l'une d'entre elles reposant sur la superposition en trois langues différentes du psaume Super flumina. La présence de solistes au milieu de la texture sonore continue annonce la fin de la pièce, qui s'achève sur le mot 'Babylone'. Four American Choruses was commissioned by Simon Halsey and the City Of Birmingham Symphony Chorus who gave the premiere of I'm A Pilgrim the first of the four choruses on 31st January 2004 in Symphony Hall Birmingham. The complete set was premiered by the Netherlands Radio Choir conducted by Simon Halsey in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam on the 24th April 2004. The UK premiere of he entire set was again given by Simon Halsey and the City Of Birmingham Symphony Chorus on the 26th May 2005.
