The Same Flame was inspired by Pierre de Coubertin’s ideals of Olympism which gave rise to the modern Olympic and Paralympic values: Respect Excellence Friendship Courage Equality Determination and Inspiration. These seven values are celebrated in five movements so four of them had to double up – Friendship with Equality and Courage with Determination. Each movement is scored for slightly different choral forces so the work is varied. Also individual movements may suit different choirs giving the opportunity for individual performance or collaboration between choirs. All fivemovements of The Same Flame are published as individual octavos. A complete vocal score is available on request from the publishers.Ideal for younger choirs due to its approachability voicing and focus on friendship All-weather friends is mostly in unison with some optional and approachable divisi. Programme note When in 1975 I had finished composing my 3rd Symphony (begun in 1973) I wrote three simple melodies for two psalm texts by Ole Sarvig: “The Year” and “Choral Hymn”. These three tunes were derived from the same material as the second movement of the 3rd Symphony and could be harmonized together in several different tempo relationships at the same time - like fractals – which inspired me to write several choral and instrumental works in the following decade based onthese melodies: “Frost Psalm” “Winter Cantata” “Cantica” a.o.  One of these ‘Sarvig melodies’ is now in the Danish Hymnbook nr. 720 under the title 'Året'(The Year).  Jordens vej for choir and organ was the basis of the work Korsalme (1982) for mixed choir and instruments (ad lib.). Pergolesi has cleverly combined 2 styles: the learnedcounterpoint of the style Antico and the new decorative languageof the Neopolitan opera. Composer/critic Jean-Jacques Rousseau calledthe opening movement 'the most perfect and touching duet to come fromthe pen of any composer'. The final amen can be heard at the end ofthe movie Amadeus. Mozart greatly admired the music of Pergolesi.The complete work was first published in London in 1749. From Songs Of Peace-The 14th-century Eucharistic text ‘Ave verum’ has been set to music by many composers over the centuries no doubt drawn to its vivid and powerful imagery. Todd first set the words (for SATB choir) in 2001 but this different setting is the fourth movement of a larger work Songs of Peace which was written in 2012 in memory of the composer’s mother. The unison first verse is introduces the beautiful melody which fits naturally into the lush harmony supplied in the piano part. A second often imitative part is added for the second verse though the piece doesn’t stray too far from its very approachable nature. There is occasional optional further divisi which adds extraharmonic effects when included.
