Original anthem The light of Christ is beautifully portrayed in this stirring, Christmas medley by the writing team of Tom Long and Allen Pote. The first section is an original ballad focused on the imagery of a single flame overcoming the darkness which builds to the refrain: This flame of love and sacrifice will fill the world, this light of Christ. The anthem then segues into two verses of Joy to the World with the option of adding the congregation for a thrilling conclusion. This piece is the concluding selection in Tom Long and Allen Pote's blockbuster Christmas cantata, By Heaven's Light. The Orchestration contains a Conductor's Score and parts for: Flute, Oboe, Trumpet in B-flat, French Horn in F, Percussion, Cello and Electric Bass.

Some history: this song comes from Haiti, but actually refers to the first King of Angola, Ngolo Kiluanje, who was revered as a great king. The Creole word for king (wa) plus the king's name (Ngolo) became Wangolo. It's an authentic folk song recalling the peace and prosperity the Angolan people enjoyed before colonization. This rhythmic rendition, which may be performed without piano if desired, includes optional body percussion, suggested parts for djembe and other instruments, optional solos in the call and response section, plus a final descant that tops off the triadic parallel harmonies. A great fit for choirs of any age or ability! Harry Belafonte sang this joyful West Indies song on his 1956 album Calypso. Dr. Robinson's arrangement has just the right amount of repetition versus development, and will come together quickly with intuitive voice leading and some stylistic syncopation. One a cappella refrain just after the key change features the conga to keep the groove going, and a final descant adds a rhythmic counterline above.
