The cantata Ihr Menschen, ruhmet Gottes Liebe (You mortals, tell of God's devotion) BWV 167 is one of the first works which Bach wrote in his capacity as Kantor of St. Thomas's Leipzig. It was composed for the Feast of St John, and was performed for the first time on 24 June 1723 in Leipzig. This concise and lively cantata is scored for four vocal soloists and modest instrumental forces; only the final chorale Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren is for all four vocal parts and the use of strings, with the soprano reinforced by a slide trumpet. The text is partly drawn verbatim from Zacharias's hymn of praise in St Luke's Gospel chapter 1. It praises God's grace and love, as fulfilled by his promise of salvation through Jesus for which John has prepared the way and the path. Score available separately - see item CA.3116700.

O the depth is a devotional work, suitable as an introit or short anthem, which couples together a passage from the New Testament (Romans 11) and a single verse from the Old Testament (Isaiah 55) which McGlade felt complemented each other very well. The beautiful texts, both of which dwell upon Gods unfathomable wisdom and knowledge, naturally lend themselves to expressive treatment. In this setting, with its long legato lines, gentle dissonances and feeling of space and poise, the composer conveys something of the sense of wonder and majesty contained in the words.

For SATB unaccompanied Like as the Hart sets reflective yet fervent words from Psalm 42. The vocal writing is emotive and expressive, and the fluctuating metres perfectly complement the rhythm adopted by the psalmist when penning this devotion.

A hauntingly simple tune of from India in the form of a bhajan - a traditional devotional song of praise to God. Scored for flute and SATB voices, with text in both Hindi and English. These Three Songs of Love were commissioned by Exultate Singers and first performed on 14 February 2015 at St George's Bristol. The three texts (Clare, Yeats and McCrae) represent various moods of love, from the thrill of its first appearance and the mini death which this involves, through the devotion felt towards the beloved even if they are unaware of it, to the distant memories evoked by a return to an old haunt. The florid and expressive music is tied very closely to the words, with rich harmonies and clever counterpoint alongside homophonic passages. The songs will present a mild challenge to intermediate choirs, but they are sure to be pleasing to both singers and audiences and an excellent addition to the contemporary repertoire. Content: *First Love *Though you are in your shining days & The Cloths of Heaven *Then and Now.
